The original self-titled is still one of my faves. Hopefully this one lives up and doesn't go down the profitable road of wubstep.

Here's a sample:

I've heard about half of those and its mostly good stuff, Endorphins is one of my favorites. The remix done by Fred V & Grafix is pretty kickass.

drat, these guys churn out full albums every 1 or 2 years. Usually about half each album is decent, a lot of it is filler, though.

Old Town Road to EGOT

Sub Focus' new album Torus is officially out today. I'm halfway through my first listen of it, and it's pretty disappointing :smith:

It's a lot....poppier than the self titled, which wouldn't be a bad thing if it was done well, but in its current state it sounds like a collection of the most standard, static, unimpressive Hospital tracks you've ever heard, and that's not what Sub Focus is known for and that's not what he does best, so it's a real bummer. It's barely even a DNB album at all, too. I know the self-titled wasn't strictly DNB, but this one is even less so.

I've been waiting for this album for a couple years and it feels like a big letdown. There hasn't been a single track that has stood out to me so far as being really impressive. Curious as to what the rest of you think, though.

Falling Down and Turn Back Time sound like they'd be marginally fun to dance to at live/DJ sets, but that's about their only redeeming quality. Yeah, Tidal Wave is the only semi interesting one on the whole album with that synth line. Even You Make It Better was boring as gently caress, and that had TC on it :(

At the beginning of Until The End, it sounded like it was going to turn out to be something interesting, but then it just went on to be a wholly unremarkable b-side from High Contrast's The Agony And The Ecstasy.

Enei is crawling in my ear lately. I think techstep and neuro is back.

New live set on Ultrawizardsword on Friday, 7 CST. Stoked to drop some 2013 tracks. I have noticed that the dark/halftime output is starting to slow but there is still plenty of broken hosed up cool stuff with massive basslines. That Alix Perez album isn't too bad, definitely bigger tracks than I normally play but it's well done.

After seeing those posts about Sub Focus' new album I was wondering why nobody had even so much as mentioned Chase & Status' upcoming effort... then I listened to the previews and realised it was because there's only two d&b tracks on it. Still, I'm personally a lot more interested in this than Torus, so consider this a heads up I guess.

Aww man, that's disappointing :smith: I just heard about it either yesterday or the day before and was looking forward to checking it out.

e: Well some of the previews sound pretty dope, even though most of them aren't D&B. Better than anything on Torus. Machine Gun (ft. Pusha T) and Lost & Not Found sound the most impressive.

After No More Idols (which also didn't have much dnb on it), there were a slew of dnb remixes from the genre's top producers, I would expect remixes from TC, Loadstar, Netsky, S.P.Y, and the rest shortly after release.

Just gave Torus a listen, pretty disappointing. Not really sure what else to say about it. IMO Sub Focus released some of his best tracks in 2005-2007 (For example: Frozen Solid, Airplane and Special Place).

Also re No More Idols: I quite liked the album as I'm a fan of grime. No Problem is the best track on that album, no question :colbert:

Edit: unrelated but yesterday I discovered that there is actually a music video for "All Is Lost" by BSE and it is lame as hell: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3t3WX9HA84Q.

Pleasantly surprised. Definitely a break from the Camo & Krooked norm, it's definitely a grower of an album. It's more of a headphones than a soundsystem album, however: I don't expect many of these tunes to fit well in a DJ set. Certainly worth a couple of plays on Spotify, at least.

In other news, Noisia & Evol Intent's new collaboration sounds pretty much like what you would expect from a Noisia & Evol Intent collab.

Yessssssss

Some of my first ever exposure to DNB was hearing the Aphordite remix of Wonderwall on a mix CD in my brother's car in like 2001 or 2002. I have no idea why he had that because he didn't listen to any other DNB that I know of (if he had, I'd have likely been exposed to DNB even earlier than I was) and I don't remember hearing this remix anywhere else around that time. That was around the Kazaa era though, so that's probably where he found it.

I just have to post this absolutely stunning tune by Koan Sound & Asa. The new EP is brilliant, but it's obviously not all strictly D&B, as Koan Sound usually is whatever they want, really.

I just love the subtle filtered neurofunk bassline he's got going throughout the start. That raw sound mixed with emotional piano music fits extremely well, in my opinion.

My pleasure, man. Just saying, I wouldn't classify the entire EP as D&B, but rather just electronic. The first part is mostly downtempo with hints of IDM and D&B, but a lot of really punchy drums and quite a bit of grimey bass. Have fun!

Yeah, you're right. I just finished listening to the whole thing from start to finish, and Starlite is the only track I'd really classify as D&B-like, aside from maybe Tetsuo's Redemption. Coincidentally, those are my two favorite tracks on here. Still, I very much enjoyed the whole thing despite the rest of it not being D&B, and I'm glad you turned me on to them :) I'll be checking out their other releases, too. This one sounded like a more accessible Skrillex release, which is funny because apparently they're on Skrillex's label.

Black Sun Empire recently released a remix compilation under Blackout Music NL: Variations On Black. It's around 80% new material with remixes of tracks from Driving Insane right up to From The Shadows. Some notable tracks:

BSE & Concord Dawn - The Sun (Evol Intent Remix) - The dark and dirty style of Evol Intent really bleeds through in this remix.
BSE Feat. Foreign Beggars - Dawn Of A Dark Day (Receptor Remix) - Receptor has basically turned the first four minutes of the track into a giant buildup for an equally enormous drop at 4:00. Style-wise it's an interesting remix as Receptor is known for faster and darker tracks that border into skullstep territory (Very similar to Current Value).
BSE & Eye-D - Brainfreeze (Neonlight Remix V1) - Somewhat of a newcomer to the scene Neonlight have recently started to prove themselves as being capable of producing amazing tracks and this remix is a testament to that.

Oh and the worst track: "Eraser (SPL Remix)" - Basically a dubstep abortion.

I first heard Neonlight on one of the Lifted Music podcasts where they played the track Computer Music from Neonlight's Byte Bites Bit EP (LFTD012, Lifted Music). That second drop at 1:50 is just awesome.

They also had an awesome remix on BSE's most recent album From The Shadows: BSE - Eraser (Neonlight Remix)

In other news: Hospital has joined Drip.fm. Fairly simple concept: for a monthly fee ($12/month), you'll get their three latest releases (right now, the Etherwood album, and the Here With You and Move Around singles), and all future releases (e.g. the Loving You Is Easy single that releases on Monday) in your choice of MP3, FLAC or WAV flavours. There's also some back catalogue stuff lined up, in the event that they don't have three releases a month (the original Sick Music compilation will be serving as filler on the 25th). Not a bad idea: committed fans save some money, while the label gets a constant revenue stream. Bunch of other labels such as OWSLA and Ninja Tune have similar offerings (although the subscription is a per-label affair).
