The whole idea of spending the winter in solitude with your dog in a cabin you made is really romantic; but I'd totally wuss out in 2 days.

Crow Jane posted:Dead Man, if you haven't seen it yet. It's Jim Jarmusch, so it's not necessarily for everyone. It's beautifully shot, though, and Neil Young's score is gorgeously haunting. I really loved Happy People too. It reminded me a lot of that PBS Richard Proenneke documentary. Speaking of Werner, Cave of Forgotten Dreams is also excellent. Encounters at the End of the World is pretty good but maybe a little dry, and I actually couldn't make it through Into the Abyss. Not that it was bad necessarily, the interviews were just a little too awkward. I wish Grizzly Man was on Netflix. It seems like Herzog's best known doc and I still haven't seen it.

Season 3 of the Walking Dead is up! And if Season 7 of 30 rock doesn't go up soon, I'm gonna cut somebody or something. I would've figured it'd be up months ago. I'm jonesing, man. I'm jonesing.

How soon so the Marvel movies start to stream after the DVD release? I thought Avengers hit pretty quickly, but can't remember Iron Man 1/2. I was planning on renting Iron Man 3 for the wife to see, but may just wait for Netflix.

If you feel like having a good cry you should watch Serving Life. It's a documentary about a hospice inside of a prison where the inmates care for inmates that are dying of old age and cancer and other diseases. It's really good.

Finally finished Orange is the New Black. The "scared straight" episode toward the end is one of the funniest things I've seen in my life, I had to pause it I was laughing so hard. Also saw DeadHeads last night, it's an independent zombie comedy that's pretty well done and worth seeing if you like the genre.

I just watched Silent Hill: Revelation, and recommend it to anyone who wants to watch a campy horror movie. The movie had me hooked from the scene where Harry Mason is wearing jeans and a denim shirt, then puts on a denim jacket. And Harry Mason isn't a new character in this movie, Sean Bean's character from the first Silent Hill movie changes his name to Harry Mason. And it only goes up/downhill from there. The makeup and practical effects are also really good, although whenever there's a 100% computer animated monster it looks like a cartoon. It also has a bunch of hackneyed 3D horror movie kills, which only make it campier if you're like me and watched it in 2D. Basically, it doesn't quite hit the high water mark of Super Mario Brothers: The Movie, but it tries and is semi-successful. edit: And it's worth mentioning that both Ned Stark and John Snow are in the movie, making it even harder to take seriously. Totally TWISTED posted:Can I get some thread reviews on Derek? Worth watching past the first 2 episodes? I enjoyed it. It's certainly not Gervais's best series, but it's fun to watch him unapologetically mock the mentally retarded. Once again you get to hear Karl Pilkington wax poetic, but without Gervais's irritating laugh drowning him out. If you've heard/seen An Idiot Abroad or The Ricky Gervais Show, you know what I'm talking about.

American Mary is a new twist on old ideas but very well done. Katharine Isabelle, as Mary, walks the thin line between naive, dark, sexy and slutty while being sincere and believable. About the time I started thinking this wasn't a horror movie it got dark and uncomfortable. I'm having a hard time scaring up movies on streaming for my October Horrorthon. About the only popular horror I haven't watched on Netflix is the new Silent Hill and VHS (which I have no desire to watch).

Without knowing for sure what you have & haven't seen, here's some ideas; Antiviral is pretty decent. It's directed by David Cronenburg's son and it is very Cronenburg at that. It's slow, but definitely weird. The Bay is a solid mocumentary/first person horror flick. They use the first person gimmick pretty well to make it believable. There's some shots in the flick that'll make you squirm too. Troll Hunter is a blast! If you like giant monsters, you're set. The Hamilton's came out of the festivals, interesting little flick. Different take on some classic themes. Let the Right One In, the original of 'Let Me In'. Both great flicks, it's worth seeing if you've only seen the original for the subtle differences. Altered is a good monster type flick by Eduardo Sanchez who did "Blair Witch Progress". Good flick, no first person gimmick! He did Lovely Molly too, which has it's moments. I liked it the first time I saw it, not quite as much the second.

Seen Antiviral, The Bay, Troll Hunter, Let the Right One In Will check out The Hamiltons, Altered, and Resolution. Molly is unavailable for streaming and I cancelled my DVD sub. I'm also looking at Crackle and Epix, but don't have an Amazon sub. Also watched State of Emergency which I would recommend to anyone who likes some Romero flavor with the odd twist that the people get along. Cannot recommend Hellraiser Revelations, what an awful turd even though Tracey Fairaway was decent for a low budget horror actress. I mean, I know the story on why this was made but if this is all the effort they're going to put in then why not allow the rights to expire. And I'm not married to the idea that Doug Bradley is the only person who can play Pinhead, well maybe engaged to the idea, but this Collins guy should never do it again. The guy they hired for voiceovers was even worse worse. And I thought the NOES remake was bad.

I watched The Bay last night. What a piece of poo poo that was. It was so over the top with its messaging and then at the end when that stupid couple arrives in a completely DEAD TOWN with their YOUNG INFANT and "Hey lets explore this town full of rotting corpses!" Their boat was out of gas - big deal - still some from a dead person's boat.

I loved The Innkeepers but I like horror movies that are more about atmosphere than body counts. It's a slow movie but I liked the characters and thought it was a great follow up to House of the Devil, which is probably still streaming too. Since we're talking horror, can anyone tell me whether Lords of Salem is worth watching? Rob Zombie has been mostly bad at making movies but I am willing to give it a chance.

Here's the horror I've seen lately on Instant: The Bad Battledogs - This was an Asylum movie, so I should've known better, but I thought Dennis Haysbert and Ernie Hudson would make this worth watching. Nope. Dracula 3000 - Casper Van Dien, Tiny Lister and Coolio fight Dracula in space. This one's bad, but you'll giggle at it a bit, maybe a 2 out of 5 kind of movie. 7 Below - This one's got Val Kilmer and Ving Rhames. I don't know what else to tell you about the plot though, because it was terrible and nothing made sense, so I turned it off in 30 minutes. A Haunting at Silver Falls - Ostensibly a scary movie about a ghost that haunts a young lady. However the ghost is so overused (it is seriously in just about every scene after the first 20 minutes) that the movie seems more like a sketch comedy skit. Episode 50 - A movie about a Ghost Hunters type show. Bland, cheap, idiotic garbage. Medium Raw - A handful of people are accidentally locked in to the stupidest maximum security facility for the insane. This is a low budget Canadian movie, but there was some craft put into it so it's kind of okay. Apollo 18 - Garbage-tier found footage movie... IN SPACE! The Not Too Bad The Last Will and Testament of Rosalind Leigh and The Skeptic - White guy who doesn't believe in the supernatural inherits a spooky old house from a deceased female relative. As lazy as the premise sounds for both of them, I thought both of these were actually pretty good, largely because they play to themes of loss and mourning instead of just going straight for the 'Boo!'. Resolution - I'll echo the praise for this, but the clever bit will be better if I don't tell you about it beforehand. 6 Souls - This one's kind of middle of the road, but I'll recommend it because I thought Jonathan Rhys Meyers does a good job as a guy with spooky multiple personality disorder. Apartment 143 - Like Episode 50 except good. Bedurndurn has a new favorite as of 23:23 on Oct 9, 2013 |

After House of the Devil, The Innkeepers was terribly disappointing. Everyone got a bad case of the horror-movie-stupids. Lords of Salem was another disappointment. There were some nicely done shots and the (very) occasional creepy vibe, but it was terribly dull with an awful script and some pretty bad acting. Surprisingly, Sheri Moon wasn't bad at all.

I can recommend it solely based on the strength of the soundtrack by Peter Gabriel at the top of his game (this was the first album he put out after So).
