An interesting thing in the comments there.

Kazerad posted:

Serious talk, guys:

With the amount of time I spend working on little mini-games and stuff, it’s becoming pretty clear that I can’t keep the comic updated at an acceptable speed AND with the level of complexity I want it to have. Now, a normal, boring person would look at this fact and conclude that I need to “choose” one or the other. But I prefer the much more reasonable conclusion: I need a second Kazerad so I can do cool stuff at a faster rate.

When the initial cloning experiments failed, I fell back to a more conventional solution. If you’ve noticed any differences in art style in these last couple updates, it’s because my friend Cider has been helping out with the art! I am training him to be a second me, though he is still getting the style down. We decided to keep it a secret at first to see if anyone noticed, and like two people did. Now that you all know, you can entertain yourselves by trying to guess which parts were drawn by him and which were drawn by me. I’ll tell you the right answers if they make me look good.

I’ve outsourced parts of the art to friends before, but usually just a panel or two, never on this scale. So far it’s been a surprisingly fun experience; I’ve been catching up on some other stuff and preparing things for future updates while my comic continues to update even faster than it was before. We’re going to try to kick it up a notch this coming week and see if we can update it faster than once-per-week. And meanwhile, I’m going to try to knock out a bunch of other stuff I’ve been procrastinating on, like making the fanart page not suck. It kind of needs it.

So the moral is teamwork or something, I don’t know. Also, create copies of yourself so you can be Voldemort.

This, but unironically. It's not just art with ponies, the top picture at the moment is specifically about how much it costs :10bux: more to commission explicit ponysex because greater anatomical detail requires more time drawing, and includes examples. :barf:

Now that I look closely at it, ponies and furry bondage is all there is on that DA page. Fortunately to get to the really sick stuff, you have to click to Cider's personal blog. But let's not talk about this, it's not like Kazerad, the author of the webcomic this topic is about, specifically linked us to the page I'm referring to. After all, you have to click twice to get to Twilight Sprinkle, Rainbow Bukkake, or Triple Penetration is Magic. I have to wonder what made Kazerad decide, "yes, this particular DeviantArt furvert ponyfucker is the guy I want to take over actually drawing my webcomic while I work on animations."

You can ask! Like, I'm right here, and I'm pretty much impossible to offend. I think it is an interesting question too.

Over the course of Prequel (and some things before Prequel, I guess) I've been learning a lot about how to choose people to work with. A sad reality I have slowly uncovered is that most artists - even ones that are really nice, very skilled, or have years of professional experience - are pretty terrible as collaborators. On stuff like the Kvatch walkaround it wasn't so bad, since I had a very large number of artists all working for free, so they were each sort of free to do whatever they wanted, however much they wanted, and I could fill in the blanks myself at the end. On longer-term collaborations, though, that sort of approach isn't really viable. You need someone who not only can do the required work, but will do the required work, won't make the same mistakes again and again, and can figure things out even if you don't tell them what to do.

Working with these small and informal teams, I learned that the most valuable people were never the ones with the best skills or the most education. Rather, it was the people who seemed to operate under the least constraints. Squiggles wasn't the most important artist on the Kvatch walkaround because she could draw well, but because she took what I told her to do and got like ten of her friends to work on it without me even asking. Ch'marr wasn't valuable to the dream sequence because he could program what I described, but because he took my request of "can you draw an image outside the post borders?" and suggested that ridiculous stairs page instead. You aren't just looking for people that can think outside the box, but people who are just literally incapable of seeing where the box begins or ends and think you're weird for even acknowledging it. The best tend to be the weirdest tend to also be the most fun. If that makes sense.

But no, to answer your question it wasn't a snap decision, or like I was browsing my secret list of DeviantArt Furvert Ponyfuckers to find just the right one. I had been considering a collaborator for a while and judging different people I knew, and Cider fit pretty much all the criteria I had - with the added bonus of giving pretty much no shits about what he draws and even having a good sense of humor about it. How well the partnership works out in the long-term can be a metric of how well my criteria actually work.

If you feel like it is too easy to click your way to porn, though, I can ask him to increase the maze length. This is actually something he brought up with me before I credited him, and we both figured it took enough clicks that you'd only get to explicit stuff if you were really after it. And if you are, it's not like it's a secret?

Yeah, I don't either. I can see how it might be good anatomy practice, but I see way too many flaws in my work for it to be worth the effort. - I'd probably just be horrified and never want to look at it again, much less show the internet.

Anyway, it seems pretty irrelevant what Cider does outside of Prequel. The stuff within the comic has been really good and I wouldn't have noticed without being told. Besides, there are no horse races in TES so I doubt it'll come up.

Oh, I just want to clarify that I only meant weird porn for commissions. Drawing nudes is essential to illustration practice, and properly "erotic" art has its place like everything else I guess. In that sense then I'd say that yes, every artist has to draw "porn" sometimes.

So that's what I been doing wrong!
A person who draws a thing you like, also draws a thing you don't like. This is ok, because you don't have to like either everything or nothing that an artist does. You can continue enjoying Prequel, regardless of the other things the artist works on.

Sure, but you'd call him a mediocre artist, and not refuse to even judge them only because he started World War 2. Pony porn shouldn't be different from the Holocaust in that way.
