yes it was too expensive for the home market. it was still a screamingly good deal and lit the world on fire. as it turns out home users are not the primary market for personal computers. who knew?

that's only half-sarcastic. in 1981, nobody knew that personal computers would be a big deal in business. having a terminal on your desk, or better yet, your secretary's desk, was the normal model. having a personal computer at work with local i/o and local processing was a really strange idea

but it took off in a big way

and thats why this happened

the main thing to notice here is that the other home computers didn't immediately dry up and blow away

ibm pc is adding to the size of the stack. it was a brand new market unto itself. an inexpensive computer that did things other than play vidya games

the commodore 64 was dirt loving cheap. it dropped below $300 in like 1984 after being release in 1982 for $600. then by 1986 it was like $200

it was popular globally because dirt cheap + still technically useful for some computer stuff

in contrast the amiga sold like poo poo everywhere but a bunch of idiot euro nerds overestimate its importance because their parents never bought them real game consoles or real computers.

well i guess if you count "figuring out a way to make 3.5 inch floppies slower and less reliable then 5.25 inch floppies" as "being real"

the only things amigas are good for is shoving up a video toaster up its rear end and compositing some fukken tv stuff. they were great at that

taht's commodore being a lovely company, the engineering division was constantly trying to upgrade the hardware including the floppy drives and the suits never greenlighted any of it until the 1200 which was beyond too little too late

the amiga was the ultimate "shoulda-been" but commodore ran it into the ground as hard as they fukken could

then they went bankrupt and the furries took over :smithicide:

It joked that soon your smart phone would be everything, including your insulin pump.

uh, are you kidding? FDA approval would be quite a feat on that

there's a FDA guideline for "mobile apps", with huge exemptions for anything that's just recording personal health data and presenting it to a user. but the second you recommend treatment or handle a chemical, it's subject to the same regulatory approval as a device

Not only that, but do you know slow medical people are on stuff like "useful interfaces"

Just to get my pump to interface with my actual computer I have to keep around a windows XP SP1 virtual machine since the software won't work with anything past that.
