King of Dragon Pass has some things in common with Crusader Kings II. Mostly the game having a life of it's own, while you watch poo poo play out and your tribe eventually get massacred or cursed or something. It's a totally great game.

Decided to go through the steps for an Aussie account to try Tiny Death Star. To say this is charming is an understatement. The Star Wars theme and Imperial March in that Tiny Tower jazz style music is a very nice touch.

However the bux have definitely been disneyfied. You no longer get one for fully stocking your place and after a half hour of ferrying people on the elevator I haven't received any at all. You also only get one for a dream job match. Nimblebit, how could you!

Omg Tiny Death Star is unbelievably adorable. :3: I would play this game forever if not for the Disney IAP. It's funny, I maxed most of Tiny Tower without spending a cent, then threw some cash their way just out of appreciation. Did the same in Pixel People. I've never bought IAP in a system that got too grabby, though. Not that I expect TDS to change any.

"...creating a vision of the sort of society you want to have in miniature"
A promising horror game is being released tonight called Indigo Lake.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=99nO_3W6HCg&feature=player_embedded

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=99nO_3W6HCg

Based on early comments, sounds like it prioritizes the adventure elements (exploring and puzzle solving) over the action elements.

Sounds like it's fairly open world also

quote:

The Story

Reports of unusual sightings at Indigo Lake are commonplace but recently a spate of suicides has triggered an investigation by paranormal specialists. Your good friend Dr Everett was sent to the lake to find out the truth behind the recent activity but he has failed to report in. It is now your task to find him and put to rest any supernatural activity for good.

Gameplay

You are able to freely move anywhere within the environment to search for clues and dispel the spirit forces. With such a large environment a 4X4 vehicle can be used to manoeuvre quickly around the map. As ghost hunting is a risky business you are equipped with a hand gun loaded with tracer rounds that can scare away the spirits, blast through doors and trigger puzzles. You are also given a pair of smart glasses which can highlight clues and items as well as and record every terrifying step of your adventure along with a picture in picture reaction camera. Recordings are saved to camera roll for uploading to YouTube or other video sites and can be edited with iMovie.

Comments from a beta tester (though it's from Touch Arcade forums who are prone to over-enthusiasm. Still, sounds promising.

quote:

I beta tested Indigo Lake, completing the game in about 8 hours, and can easily recommend Indigo Lake. I can honestly say this was the most genuinely scary experience I've had in iOS gaming, I'll try to highlight some of my thoughts without ruining or discussing anything too specific because Indigo Lake is best experienced first hand.

The atmosphere on display in the app is rich and immersive with rainfall and leaves slow falling everywhere (also giving a good sense of peripheral motion engendering uncertainty and paranoia). The sound design is really great. Some of the ghastly effects are deliciously subtle it's entirely possible to miss (without spoiling it there is an element where it almost feels like something mysterious taps you on the shoulder occasionally). I don't want to ruin anything but there are some crazy “WTF!” moments that unsettled me. The horror is downright scary but sometimes campy striking me in a wonderful black comedy manner while still retaining some horribly eerie characteristics. Sometimes haunts are subtle but other times the game focuses you into some time pressure situations or makes you look at things that highlight the specters effectively.

The controls are traditional first person shooter (left thumb to look/steer and right thumb to move with tap on perimeter to fire). It's a beautiful game that might be worth the price just to stomp around and check out the environment, Indigo Lake has a great sandbox feel that allows open world exploration. It is a lot of fun just roaming around and finding surprises, there's still cryptic bits that I don't fully understand (for me, odd pillars). With the slow open world pace and unlimited ammo Indigo Lake is much more like a first person adventure game that rewards exploration and puzzle solving (but at times is frantic requiring quick action). One minor quirk was the lack of a reload option, fire shots until the chamber empties then tap to auto-reload (but no reloading partial clips, ammo is unlimited). The adventure game style puzzles were challenging and Indigo Lake does not under estimate the intelligence of it's audience, something I appreciated. Even when stuck by puzzles it often felt like there were threads to follow.

Being able to drive a car is a nice touch but I preferred to walk because the game is so detailed and spooky. The car can go up to 30mph and help you zip around, it seemed fun to me but more as a mini-game than a necessary feature.. your play style may vary. Some of Indigo Lake requires you to trend back and forth over the campground area and can feel fetch quest like but without spoiling I can say the “level” design is unique allowing for easy backtracking if necessary (and streamlined with a vehicle).

The developers put in a lot of polished touches. The ability to video record your own games within the app is unprecedented. The menu design is nice requiring you to turn your iDevice to access settings or review objectives (this reduces virtual buttons and allows more atmospheric interface focused on game environment). There is a Google glasses tech element where prompts are displayed from a third party onto the world through your headgear that is intelligent and helps guide you early on while “in character.”

Indigo Lake was a lot of fun, it does world exploration and especially chilling fright effectively so is easy to recommend. You won't want to miss Indigo Lake.

I haven't been in this thread in a while, but I dropped by to see if anyone was talking about Paint It Back. No mention of it in the last 20 pages, so here's a quick pitch: Picross with a quirky theme from an ex-PopCap dude. I'm pretty pumped. Anyway, back to arguing about the same three arguments that chase me out of this thread every few weeks.

So did I manage to miss the hype over the release of DND: Arena of War earlier this month? Or was there just none to be had? Which is understandable, because it's got iAP coming out of the wazoo(buy increased wazoo capacity, only 40 crystals!) and has an absolutely bizarre combat mechanic.

It hasn't launched in North America yet.

Must've left my app store location set to another country then. Regardless, the game is just terribly bizarre as well as just plain terrible. It's not a tactical turn-based RPG, it's not even an action RPG. It borrows the combat mechanic from Squids, where you fling your party members at the enemy. Except you never get a party, just one character. And instead of full levels you kill off a couple of enemies in a small boxy room. Not a massive surprise, given how catastrophically awful Hasbro has been at developing their digital properties, but it does make me worry about what Lords of Waterdeep will look like.

Device 6, the latest game from the developers of Year Walk is out.

quote:

A surreal thriller in which the written word is your map, as well as your narrator.

DEVICE 6 plays with the conventions of games and literature, entwines story with geography and blends puzzle and novella, to draw players into an intriguing mystery of technology and neuroscience.

Anna wakes up in a castle on a remote island, with little recollection of how she got there. All she remembers is an unusually unpleasant doll.

Why are there two identical castles on the island? Who is the mysterious man in the bowler hat? And above all, what is the purpose of the tests Anna is put through?

Read, listen and peek into three-dimensional photographs to solve the bizarre mysteries of DEVICE 6.

I'd say more but I really think this is a game that the less you know going in the better.

Indigo Lake is also pretty incredible, for a variety of reasons, first and foremost being amazingly small for what it seems to be, like, weirdly tech demoie small, and a genuinely good atmosphere, again, so far.

Also, a glaringly misspelled word in the intro.

Edit: oh and you can drive cars. Wasn't so impressed with that as everyone else. Seems like something you could do in games in the 90's, and we've got GTA on iOS, you know. Nice to see the effort made, though.

Year Walk is mostly just disturbing imageery (Unnerving) with an occassional jump scare IIRC. I found parts of Year Walk to be a bit obtuse (the sound puzzle), for example. Don't be afraid to use a FAQ.

I screamed out loud 5 times in Year Walk, which I played in the dark while wearing headphones. One 3 hour session will get you through the game. It's jump scares, but the entire atmosphere and style of the game builds up this sense of creeping dread that it puts you on a hair trigger for when the scares actually arrive. You know more are coming, you are expecting them, but you are powerless against them.

Year Walk is still on my top 5 games of the year, all systems. It does some unusual stuff with multitouch to the extent that it is a game that only works on iPad, it has a great story and a unique art style, and something about it just lingers in the thoughts long after you stop playing.

There's a Giant Bomb quick look, but I recommend you only watch 5 minutes to see the art style and how you move around. Go in blind, but do go in. It's a game that's genuinely great on its own terms, it needs no apology for being an iPad game. Far from it, it only works as an iPad game.

Please play Year Walk. Please don't use an FAQ (unless you really, really have to). Please play it in the dark with headphones. But whatever you do, please play it.

Seconding this.

Absolutely don't use a guide unless you've been stuck for a while. The 'getting lost in the woods' thing is totally the point and helps build it all up.

Besides the occasional jump scare I was really on edge throughout the pitch black buried larder thing where contrary to expectation, nothing happened at all.

The ending is fantastic too (also the post-game journal).

Okay, I just played DEVICE 6 and ruddy bloody loved it. It's a one-and-done game, and took me 2.5 hours to complete. Just so very good though. It's a weird crossbreed of genres. It's Myst as a text adventure, with added numbers stations creepiness. Great storytelling, the setting is freaky and unsettling and the puzzles are just that right level that solving them requires a bit of lateral thinking, and are very satisfying to complete. Can't really describe anything properly without potential spoiling it. But if you like puzzles, adventure games, good storytelling and unique gaming experiences then this is for you.

It's a perfect snowflake of a game. That's two fantastic iPad original games this year from just one company. I don't think I could throw enough money at these devs if I tried. All of you buggers need to go buy it so that they can continue to do what they do.

It's a great game and totally worth it at that price. I bought it for 10.

It's a really good strategy game but be honest with yourself, decide what kind of gamer you are because it's for grognard types. It's the kind of game where historical battlefields and deployments remain the same in every game so winning or losing is decided in the minutiae of the game. The presentation doesn't deviate from your standard wargame style either. Dry stuff.

It's really really well done. Controls are fluid and responsive, asynchronous multiplayer is very smooth and pain-free. Active devs that are still supporting it and adding new content all the time.

Some of the things are pretty cool. I like the headers, the pressure of having a guy run at you to line up your shot/pass, and the increased speed of things based on your opponents strength.

But I don't like how your skills regress and how they nerfed (for lack of a better word) your energy recovery between matches. Maybe with the new homes that you can buy, you can get it back up to a point where you'll recover 100% of your energy after every match.

I'm pretty pissed that they changed it so you have to pay to get the boots that put all your stats to max. Also I don't understand why someone would pay 4 dollars for a measly 100 star bux.

The gameplay changes are really good, and make it even more fun, but I wish they would have just made a new game with a more focused IAP model rather than nerf the existing game to try to get you to spend more money.
