I'm looking for a bass, would I be better off with the Vintage Modified Squier or a Rondo guitar? I don't see the Brice available anymore, what Rondo brands are good right now? I don't care about brand or resale value, I just want the most bang for my buck. Since it's my first bass I don't really know what I'm looking for, but my price range is between $150-$300 and I just want something with reliable intonation and playability.

I think the OP correctly notes that Squiers are universally recognized as a great value at the $300 price point. Head to a shop and play both a Jazz and Precision bass to see what you like. I personally started out on an Ibanez GSR200 (also in the OP), which was around $200 new, and I couldn't be happier with it. Have you considered buying a used instrument? Might give you some relief on the price point. Used Standard Fender Precision and Jazz Basses can be had in my area for $250-$300 on Craigslist.

My understanding is that in the UK and elsewhere Ricken-fakers aren't under the same pressure they are in the US. Are there any European stores that can sell me a cheap 4001 clone with a P-pickup in it? I want something like the bass in this Racer X video https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=F0ylmUzNSPA e: not looking for something that's an out and out trademark violation, just something that has the overall look

It definitely didn't come stock that way, so tape is most likely. TopherCStone fucked around with this message at 18:30 on Oct 16, 2013 |

So it isn't often that you get a second chance on an instrument you regrettably sold... About 3 years or so ago I sold a bass to help fund my Lakland Hollowbody. I didn't WANT to sell it because it sounded and played amazing, but I needed the cash. I sold it to h_double here on the forums. He's now given me the opportunity to buy it back and I couldn't be more pumped to get Nola back in my quiver... 1978 Ibanez "Silver Series" p-bass (a fender lawsuit model). And she even looks good naked...

If I'm looking for a Squier Vintage Modified P or J bass at local pawn shops, how would I describe it over the phone so they'd know if they have it? Because they just say "Jazz" or "Precision" bass on the head stock.

My fretless J has 'Duncan Designed' printed on the pickups, which I think they all come with as standard. Like these: (they're 5-strings but you get the idea) As far as I know there isn't a unique serial number type for the VMs, I think they usually start with IC or IS or ICS (Indonesian factories) and then two digits for the year, so anything before 07 (I think) is too early to be a VM. There are only so many models, and if you can use the year to whittle that list down you'll have a better chance of ruling stuff out. It'll be harder if they've had any modifications. Without being familiar with the lineup though, I'd say look at the pickups. Someone might know some other secret mojo though

I thought the most distinctive feature on the Vintage Modified models was the black block inlays on a maple fretboard, but it looks like that's not even universal: http://www.fender.com/basses/jazz-bass/vintage-modified-jazz-bass-rosewood-fingerboard-3-color-sunburst/ Your best bet is just to ask for Squier P or J basses in general, and then go check them out yourself. They're all functionally identical and cosmetically similar. Just find one you like. Anyone have recommendations for combo amps in the 100 watt range? Thinking about heading out to Guitar Center this weekend to take the Ampeg BA115 and Fender Rumble 75 for a test drive.

The BA115 has been around a long time and for good reason. It's a great amp. I also like some (not all) of the Acoustic combos that GC started making and selling a few years ago. They're cheap and worth checking out. fake e: hi fellow goon bassists I don't know why I didn't look for the bassist thread years ago

I'm looking for a bass amp that has enough power for jamming, but will mostly be played at TV volumes at home in the loungeroom. Nothing too specialised, just a nice clean tone. Basically I'm looking for the Fender Blues Jr of bass amps.

New, the heads are like $400 and bass cabs are easy to scoop up used. I'll probably catch some flak for this but I didn't particularly care for combos when jamming. Not enough headroom without being too pricey, too much of a pain in the rear end to move. I live in a duplex, I regularly do not engage my decibel cut, I haven't received noise complaints. I also have an extra 410 cab and 118 cab stashed at my drummer's house, so when I pack up to practice every week I just toss my head in some $5 laptop bag, cables and poo poo in a duffel bag, and go.

The BA115 mentioned earlier isn't drastically different, in dimensions, from the Peavey Headliner 410 cab I sometimes use. A 115 cab would be smaller still, yeah, and you would have a ton of low end but may be missing some clarity. Or tweak your EQ to adjust. Then, as mentioned earlier, you'll buy a Sansamp. We all do.

Chiming in late, but I bought a Squier Vintage Modified P bass as a cheap backup instrument, I've been playing it as my primary for the last 6 months (instead of my Fender Deluxe active P bass, which is also great). I love it, throw some good strings on it and you've got an amazing sounding bass for a bargain. Anyway, is anybody selling a 4U hard shell road rack? My cloth/wood rack is falling apart

1) it's a large case and 2) the rack drawer is quite heavy, so it's not going to be fun shipping. The case goes for ~$150 and the drawer was $75, both are in fine shape. I'd be happy with $120 for the goods and then you paying actual shipping (which I would expect to be at least $70, maybe more). I'm guessing that it'd be fine just sticking a label on the case itself - if you want it boxed, I'd take it to the FedEx store and make them pack it which usually runs around another $30 by the time you pay for the box etc. If this is way too much of a pain in the rear end that's fine. I've got a bunch of other crap I need to Craigslist anyway.

How often do you guys use compressors? Do you have them all the time (or throughout certain songs) to make your sound punchier? I can't get used to them myself. I'm sure it sounds better in a mix, but it makes me feel like I'm listening to my bass through earmuffs.
