Been making a lot of darker beats lately so decided to do something lighter. This track has more of an RnB vibe to it, I guess.

What techniques do you guys use to come up with change ups when you don't have one in your mind already?

I feel like I make good beats but they're just sixteen bar loops. When I try expanding them into a song I often struggle to come up with alternate parts and am frustrated at the alternate parts I do come up with, sometimes inspiration just won't flow.

One thing I've been doing lately that helps a bit is to start with drums and bass, and then come up with three separate melodies/harmonizations for it. At least then you've got a few patterns to play around with. You can then do things like rip the bassline out and write a new one that goes with the three new parts you just wrote.

Whatever man do whatever you want, I owe Ladle Lady/wormwood a remix that I have been sitting on for like six months.

Last night I was like "MAN I really want to do the stones throw forum beat battle" because jonwayne posted about doing it himself on Twitter.

I had the dates wrong, the new samples come out on Saturday and you have to submit your entry by Wednesday... woops, well I made one anyway out of their samples just for fun:

edit just listened to that song, the beat is cool but it sounds like you have like 4 vocal tracks that are all off time playing at once

3 or 4 tracks at once is exactly what's happening. i apologize i rushed it out to say that i did it.. im not sure anything good has ever been produced like that. i can hear myself fine but its cuz i can keep track of all the different takes since its me in there messin up. it's actually a new problem ive been having because i enjoy using multiple tracks to do harmonies and poo poo in my adlibs when im using melodies and stuff (which i only started doing with these 50 songs). i'll be working on it (in general tho, wont be updating that track) and thanks for the feedback! it's helpful to know that that is what stands out from the track. i was never sure what kinda advice i could get from you guys in this here thread but i want to get as much decent constructive criticism as i can, as obviously itd help me learn how to get better which i feel i need to do.

If your timing isn't dead on it will sound weird. There are tricks you can do when mixing to blend them together too -- compression, reverb and panning can make them into one more cohesive sound. The goal with multi tracking usually isn't to sound like there are a bunch of you rapping at the same time but to thicken it up... you can do other things too like take a low-pass filtered vocal take and mix it in to fatten the bottom.

When I've been recording my friend lately we have been using two mics, one dynamic and one compressor. That gives us two vocal tracks that are perfectly timed and it often sounds thick enough after mixing that we don't need to thicken it up any more and can just record an ad-lib/accent track and call it a day.

Ah yeah, this is one of those rare weird tracks that's not bad enough for me to delete it instantly but not good enough for me to practice the timing and make a decent recording. laziness cuz i like just moving on when i know id never personally listen to the finished product. i like to think my timing can be a lot better but when i mess it up it always creates that bunch-of-me-rapping effect, ive messed with compression and panning (in other songs) but not reverb yet. that one happens to be completely raw or whatever tho.

sounds sweet, the setup you've got going on with your friend! i enjoy doing multiple takes and stacking them and listening to the synchronization. it helps me figure out what to do better for my next take / song when i can hear multiple delivery styles overlapping each other for comparison. and rapping in-sync-with-myself is always good practice / learning experience
(i.e. https://soundcloud.com/tyleromusic/50-songs-song-1/s-0dl3R
https://soundcloud.com/tyleromusic/still-beat-by-superdeejaybee/s-nOXv4
2 tracks where i didn't do anything terribly off-sync)

btw the Ableton Push controller is really fuckin sweet and fun to play with, in case anyone didn't know. i'm still amateur as poo poo but i really like the layouts of the notes on the controller and the control over the software. can't wait to dive further into this

e: id just like to add that i think it's mostly when i write more phonetically-awkward lyrics to spit or more complicated flows that i mess up more often, unable to achieve that 'perfect take' that i have in my head when i write them

--
e2: new thing https://soundcloud.com/tyleromusic/first-fuckin-awesome-thing goal is to learn sidechain compression / ducking and how to produce a complete sounding beat by finishing it. any good beginner info that i may be overlooking would be appreciated. also if anyone wants to mess around with my sloppy thing (that i think sounds awesome) and make a beat with it they can! or any suggestions as i finish it

Dk, If I was gonna pull the trigger I'd probably get a 2000XL. I might just go with an MPD though. Way cheaper and I can travel with it easily and I'm pretty comfortable warping/sampling in Ableton.

e: I'm currently using the 8 pads on my axiom midi keyboard so anything is an upgrade.

that changeup drop should only happen the first time then go back, it's not strong as a standalone part but its so ill as an infrequent variation that denotes the sequence will restart
