Also I don't think Sounds of Skyrim has a great deal of quality control.

I'm kind of thinking, yeah. That otherwise is not a crazy or intensive load order. I'm usually running five times that on my average playthrough, and even then the majority of my crashes are memory related, not due to mods.

Honestly the thing that's fixed the majority of my fuckups (which in fairness, are inevitably caused by me being an idiot and manually installing something) is just a flat out reinstall. Especially with such a short modlist, you should be fine. Just make sure to back up your games first.

Yikes! I ran into a problem with ENB. After installing the True Vision preset my framerate dropped to about 0.5fps and it only went back up after disabling HighResTexutrePack*.esp. Anyone know what might be the issue here? I thought maybe VRAM but there's 2GB on my card so I'm really not sure.

e: errr nevermind stupid me forgot to set the VideoMemorySizeMb bit in enblocal.ini after installing. All good now. :)

VVVV yeah I know what you mean. I get about a 20fps drop on my machine. Still worth it though haha!

ENBs murder performance. I've got a 2GB card and without a bare-bones performance config my framerate would regularly be sub-30 and especially bad when turning around.

I am starting a new game. In doing so, I'm comparing the list of mods I've used in the past to the list of mods in the OP. In this post, I'm going to link lots of mods I've used which are NOT in the OP... and hope people offer opinions on them! Maybe some can be added to the OP (ping: Scyantific)? Or people can give reasons they should not be used (such as mods which have surpassed or replaced them)?

Graphics / Textures

Better Females by Bella - lots of endorsements, promo screenshots looked good. Supplanted by anything? Not updated in nearly 2 years.
Enhanced Distant Terrain - screenshots look nice; I've never played without to know the difference (maybe not needed?). has a sequel, EDT 2... at nexus mod 39394
Enhanced Lights and FX - screenshots look nice; I've never played without to know the difference. a bazillion endorsements. might have screwed up my inns in combo with perseids (I blame perseids).
Footprints - uh, yes, awesome. Is there a better footprints mod? Not updated in 6 months.
Get Snowy - yes please, I want to see effects of snow. Good stuff. Is there a better snow realism mod? Not updated in 6 months.
HQ Snow Texture - I saw this recommended somewhere as the best snow texture ever made for Skyrim, so I've been using it.
No More Blocky Faces - I feel this has a zillion endorsements because it's such an early skyrim mod and am leaning towards trying a game without it. But is it still best in class? Not updated in years.
Serious HD Retexture Skyrim - seems like a competitor to the other 2K retexture mod; I'm not sure which is better. Maybe the Bethsoft HD textures + unofficial fixes are really all someone needs?
ApachiiSkyHair - just a highly endorsed hair mod, maybe not needed, or maybe better alternatives?

Gameplay + Gear

Ars Metallica - I know some people dislike Arthmoor, but this is a set of small, sensible crafting changes. Not updated in last 6 months.
Auto Unequip Ammo - It seems like the game should just function like this? I haven't tried without it, not sure if I need it. Not updated in last 6 months.
Dragon Combat Overhaul - makes dragon fights much, much harder. author might be crazy.
High Level Enemies - no idea how many of these I actually fought, but I generally like monster mods which don't break immersion.
Increased Bounty and Guild Rewards - the author's writeup sold me on it, but I have no idea if this mod causes any problems/conflicts ingame -- and honestly I've cheated at console before to get gold, anyway.
Locational Damage - headshots and all that jazz. Not updated in 6 months. Better combat option? Maybe I don't need this.
Lock Overhaul - was using Lockpicking Overhaul before, but gonna give this one a try. Vanilla skyrim locks get real boring.
Perseids Inns and Taverns - Realistic Room Rental Enhanced - I really like the concept of this mod, but somehow many of my inns and taverns got screwed up clipping planes and rooms last game, and I'm gonna blame this mod for it. Anyone love this mod? Seems like such a good idea.
Skaal heavy Armor - this just looked like a cool set of armor.
The Seaside Library - Library mod, great for bibliophines. I love this mod and the very idea of it. Must-have.
Wet and Cold - kinda like Frostfall's little buddy, just a nice immersion mod. hmm, maybe its snow effect means I don't really need Get Snowy.
Achieve That! - fun mod with its own achievements, but which also gives bonuses ingame for them.

Ease/Convenience

Better Dialogue Controls - makes dialog on the PC better. Not updated in over 6 months. Any alternative?
Ultimate Follower Overhaul - I know it's dated, but I was surprised not to see it in the OP. I think all follower mods are bad but this may be the least bad. Someone needs to release a new one or big update.
Unread Books Glow - another must-have for bibliophiles, unless someone knows of a mod which does it better?

Other

Lootification - I don't even know if I should be using this anymore, seen it discussed here often but it's not in the OP.
Rainbows - I mean cmon, Rainbows.
Shooting Stars - yup, shooting stars.
ShowRaceMenu Precache Killer - I think I needed this to stop a crash involving hair textures at character creation.
Skytweak - don't lots of people here use this?

Briefly, from what I remember off the top of my head:

Footprints is pretty flawless.
The Get Snowy effects are already in Wet and Cold as you noted so may as well skip.
No More Blocky Faces is rolled into the XCE character edits so I'd just recommend getting all of those.
Auto Unequip Ammo is great.
Realistic Room Rental doesn't have game-breaking bugs but it does have a messed up navmesh, a lot of conflicts with other mods that edit taverns/vanilla NPCs, and isn't voice acted. I skip it - it also seems to have abandoned by the maker.

The date a mod was uploaded or the last date it was updated doesn't tell you much on it's own. If a mod is finished and/or works right, it doesn't need any more updates after all.
What you should pay attention to are (potential) compatibility issues and if the mod works.
That's not to say those dates are complely useless though. Before the Creation Kit was release (7-feb-2012) modders used third party editors, some of which didn't work right and could cause corruption issues in the plugins they produced. So any mod that was released before CK was out should not be used on it's own and instead be recreated in the CK and/or TES5Edit.

If I recall right "Enhanced Distant Terrain" has compatibility issues with Hearthfire.
As for GetSnowy vs Wet&Cold. The vfx effect both use is a bit different. I prefer GetSnowy's, but it's up to personal taste. Both mods can be used together perfectly fine as W&C's snowy effect can be disabled, so test both mod's snowy effect out on a test character and see which one you like.

Okay, so here's my thoughts:

Bella's Better Females - I used to use the 'natural' version of this, but now I prefer Nuska's Real Skin for Women (annoyingly the creator took it down from the nexus). Bella's might suit those looking for a more glamorous look though.
Enhanced Distant Terrain - I'd recommend it, and version 2, they both work in different ways.
Enhanced Lights and FX - Pick either that or Realistic Lighting Overhaul, the latter aims for realism, while EnLFX cares more about visibility and appearance. I used to use RLO for the neat flickering firelight, but switched to EnFLX recently.
Footprints - Excellent, does what it says, doens't need updating.
No More Blocky Faces - Just download Xenius Character Enhancement instead, it has this and all his other fixes packaged in.
Serious HD Retexture - There's a few big competing texture mods. The Texture Pack Combiner in the OP is a nice way to grab the best textures from all of them, if you have the patience (PS: Use the installer version, it's much better).
Apachi Sky Hair - If you like crazy flowing locks then this definitely seems to be the mod of choice. Personally I find it all a little over the top for Skyrim.
Dragon Combat Overhaul - I've used it, and it definitely works better than his other mod (Civil War Overhaul). Ultimately though I found it a bit frustrating that Apollodown's writing style left me confused as to what was actually going on.
Wet and Cold - Is great. It has its own snow effect, but if you install Get Snowy it will automatically disable that and use Get Snowy's seamlessly instead, just pick which effect you prefer. (I like Get Snowy myself). Be sure to get the Ashes version too if you have Dragonborn.
Better Dialogue Controls - You want the Updated version. Get Better MessageBox controls as well.
Ultimate Follower Overhaul - Hasn't worked well in a while. It wasn't kept up to date with Skyrim or other mods, hence not appearing in the OP. Go for Amazing Follower Tweaks or Extensible Follower Framework instead (although I do miss UFO's spell teaching method).

Anything else I haven't really used.

Edit: I should ask if it is okay to basically take everything in the OP as current and still recommended. Nothing has changed within the last few pages of discussion. I have vanilla Skyrim with no DLC (I really need to fix that) and I think I'll be downloading the Unofficial Skyrim Patch.

I took a look at that Bella's Better Females thing, and I think it looks like poo poo. Just do what WordMercenary says and get Nuska's Real Skin for Women. It's what I use, and it's pretty much the only character retexture thingy that doesn't turn your character into an anime and/or supermodel.

As far as hair goes, I've been dabbling with ApachiiSkyHair myself. Yeah, there's a lot of ridiculous hair there, but there's also some pretty good ones. Unfortunately, a lot of the hair mods on the Nexus fall into the "anime and/or supermodel" trap. There are a few that I like, though:

Lovely Hairstyles adds a few non-ugly, semi-realistic hairstyles. Some come with accessories!

Ponytail Hairstyles adds a bunch of ponytails. They look nice, and it comes with two variations of the Tomb Raider 2013 hairstyle, just in case you wanna cosplay.

Lore Styles Hair Set is in the OP for a reason. It looks pretty good, but I don't use it too often.

Superior Lore-Friendly Hair makes the original hairstyles that came with the game look a lot better.

There's also a retex of ApachiiSkyHair that makes it look more natural, but I didn't really like it. I think it messes up the colors.

Other than those, it's pretty much badly-textured and badly-modeled poo poo all the way down.

What's the best way to balance the over-all economy? Trade and barter seems like a good start but it doesn't affect quest/bounty rewards. Are there any good compliments to T&B to balance it out. I know many different mods do some combination of increasing various other prices, or increasing bounty rewards or decreasing quest rewards. But I'm not sure how severely T&B affects inflation, so to speak.

It sort of depends on what you actually want here. I have T&B cranked way up so i'm getting like a tenth of the normal value when I sell stuff and am paying around x3 (I think) the normal price to buy. This leaves the rewards for doing quests as the only really good way to make money, even though some of the quests aren't super great for cash. It's also worth noting that i'm using Morrowloot, so there's really only so much I can buy anyway.

AWFUL SOMETHING
Okay so I'm only recently starting to tool around with modding Skyrim and I've run into a problem, and I don't recall seeing it mentioned earlier in the thread. It goes like this:

1. I check this thread out and see that SKSE is required for a lot of mods, so I download that and (think) I did it right.
2. I install SkyUI to try it out.
3. SkyUI works fine but says it isn't because it can't detect SKSE.
4. I come to the conclusion that the Steam version of Skyrim just plain ignores SKSE, but appears to compensate for its lack functionally if not according to the checks the mod makes.
5. I decide to just be lazy and use Steam Workshop for all my mods.
6. SPERG is not on the Steam workshop.

Can anyone help me sort this out? I want my perks to be fun.

Skyrim is steamworks so all versions of skyrim are the steam version. SKSE works perfectly so you are probably just doing something wrong.

Are you sure you installed SKSE properly and are you launching Skyrim through SKSE?

Viperix

When I installed SkyUI with MO it kept telling me SKSE was not installed, but would install anyway. After a half dozen re-installs of SKSE(all of which I'm sure were correct, I've installed dozens of *se versions.) I decided to just try it anyway despite it's protests and it's working fine. So you *may* not have done anything wrong.

That's probably your problem. SKSE has to launch Skyrim through skse_loader.exe instead of the normal exe. Most modding utilities like Mod organizer or Wrye bash will autamatically detect if you have SKSE installed and launch through it if you us them, but if you just using steam to launch the game SKSE will not work.

I highly recommend Forgotten Magic Redone. It doesn't have a huge variety of spells, but each of them level up, allowing you to customize them with extra effects. Definitely quality over quantity here. There's a good variety from every school of magic and element of damage. It's pretty customizable as well, since it has options that allow you to change stuff like how often the spell books drop and how fast the spells level.

Alright, if you have 1GB+ of VRAM, a lot of free time, and are willing to download 5GB+, then you can use texture pack combiner, to merge and pick the best possible combination of textures. Read the link above, it covers the majority of the mods below.

A 660ti would be plenty to be able to handle Texture pack combiner and it would be my best option? I have a lot of trouble picking out the perfect texture packs and rather have a ton downloaded and have something choose the perceived best for me and let me tweak from there if I really really want to.

aMidianBorn Book of Silence, Skyrim Realistic Overhaul, Vivid Landscapes, XCE - Xenius Character Enhancement (actually Mackoms Real Skin for Men, might be possible to load this one after Xenius because I prefer this mods male textures), Improved NPC clothing, and... now I'm just naming off the OP. Did I mention that it's a really well written OP?

Basically, download the texture pack combiner then download every single texture pack that slightly tickles my fancy and have it do its magic?

I'm going crazy with the visual mods because I'm not even bothering with ENB. Last few times I've tried it's always turned out to be a huge hassle.

Can we talk combat mods? I had previously been using Locational Damage. Starting a new game, I noticed that at GEMS there are some combat mods higher on their list, such as Deadly Combat or Duel (which itself comes in two different combat style versions). I'm also using SPERG, so any changes it makes to perks/combat (I'm not even sure what it does on that front??) will be present, and Deadly Dragons / Dragon Combat Overhaul so those fights are pretty hard already.

What would you guys use when using those SPERG/dragon mods? I really want some form of locational damage -- that's part of Deadly Combat. I want combat to feel risky and deadly when someone hits me with a big sword. But conversely, it would feel weird to be able to kill any human in the game as a level 1 dude just because I have a cheap bow, some cheap arrows, and really good headshot aim.

I guess I don't know what I want. The OP doesn't list any combat mods. What's popular?

kedo
Nov 27, 2007

Deadly Combat is pretty great and regularly recommended. It definitely does not make it so you can one shot dudes with a cheap bow and arrow unless you play on a low difficulty setting. Master or higher + Deadly Combat is pretty enjoyable. However once you get above level 30 or so and have all sorts of great gear you may need to jack it up to Legendary depending on what type of character you rolled.

For reference, my current character is around level 18 or so and the only dudes he can one shot are the lowest level bandits and wildlife and whatnot. One shotting anyone else requires extremely careful aim, expensive arrows and poison.

Last I heard Duel still had some bugs and issues, but I haven't been paying too close of attention to it.

So I have a bit of an issue that I would like to solve. There's an armor mod called "Dude Where's My Pants" that adds pants to the stock leather armor. I like the way it looks, but when I put it on there's a black seam at the neck. It's a little higher up than the seam between head textures and body textures. What causes that? Is there some way I can fix it?

I have one visual problem though I haven't been able to solve: in rain, I don't actually see any rain in immediate vicinity of myself, just some ten meters in the distance. This seems to be ENB related, as turning it off shift+F12 fixes the issue.

Project ENB with Climates of Tamriel, suggested settings on them all the way (Hazardous Dungeons, Warm Interiors, Level 1 Nights in CoT). Other mods I feel might have something to do with this: Supreme Storms, CoT patch to it.

Edit:

I have maybe three crashes total in the last 100 hours played with over 100 mods running, every time I see people crash it's always because of one of two reasons:

1) they have a fantastic system and think they can load up the game with a shitload of texture mods without realizing that the game still bottlenecks through a Skyrim .exe that isn't designed to function with huge textures

2) they download poo poo that makes cosmetic changes to every cell and every worldspace when all it takes is one cell conflict to cause crashes. Since Lordshmee mentions crashing around the Rift I think it's this one, because the Riften area is notoriously unstable when it comes to cell conflicts.
