Dead Inside Darwin posted:the gaunt's ghosts warhammer 40k series, while goofy loving warhammer 40k, is basically about enlisted soldiers in space in an extremely depressed and pissed off unit who have to pull their poo poo together even as significant numbers of their comrades are constantly getting killed and theyre basically considered the backwater yokels of the imperial guard some of the 50k books are actually pretty good sci-fi wrath of iron is about how these cyborg supermen that defend humanity are actually really terrible in every way. the iron hands (the cyborg supermen) have the bonus of being self-loathing and take every opportunity to mutilate themselves so they can have more robot parts there are a ton of lovely warham books tho

if you're suggesting warhammer then you don't understand what i'm asking for. i don't want a ragtag bunch of misfits finding strength through adversity, i want "we can't fix this shuttle because space congress won't pass a budget that doesn't repeal human-robot marriage, btw we need all new gravity suits because the ones we got are the wrong color"

I'm just happy to have people reading fiction that isn't bout Jesus or ripped dudes chastely kissing southern belles. Who knows maybe an adult Harry potter or twilight reader next picks up a fantasy or scifi novel, or, just possibly, a piece of literary fiction. Gotta start somewhere If you don't learn to love fiction as a kid, The pop culture acceptance of adults reading YA fiction gives you another route into the world of reading

the hunger games books take like 2 hours to read each and have a pretty good critique on typical love triangle fluff, although it might be unintentional the third book is so ridiculous i have no idea how they can turn that into a movie

I guess the conceit in Ender's Game and Hunger Games and all that hinges on the idea of sanctioned killing versus murder (I don't really like either that much so) I mean, outside of LF posting people don't think 'The US Air Force murdered 50 civilians today by dropping a bomb on a wedding party' It's sanctioned so it's 'a thing that just happened' and not something we demand accountability or heartfelt remorse for. We think of things like that as accidents or forces or nature and not deliberate choices made by people.

Scifi readers and authors grew out of it, together. Fantasy... We'll call fantasy a work in progress. I'm just happy to have fiction be A Thing in pop culture again, and as much as I dislike the works in vogue I remain optimistic about their reader bases.
