I guess the conceit in Ender's Game and Hunger Games and all that hinges on the idea of sanctioned killing versus murder (I don't really like either that much so) I mean, outside of LF posting people don't think 'The US Air Force murdered 50 civilians today by dropping a bomb on a wedding party' It's sanctioned so it's 'a thing that just happened' and not something we demand accountability or heartfelt remorse for. We think of things like that as accidents or forces or nature and not deliberate choices made by people.

Scifi readers and authors grew out of it, together. Fantasy... We'll call fantasy a work in progress. I'm just happy to have fiction be A Thing in pop culture again, and as much as I dislike the works in vogue I remain optimistic about their reader bases.
