idk i really liked it as a sci-fi series even ignoring the 40k aspects. it does throw in some poo poo like the living saints but its a good series.

some of the 50k books are actually pretty good sci-fi

it's YA fiction, by middle aged moms for their kids.

the new thing in pop culture is that it is ok for parents to pick up books from their teenage daughters. some may argue that this infantilizes fiction. I'm just happy to have people reading fiction that isn't bout Jesus or ripped dudes chastely kissing southern belles.

Who knows maybe an adult Harry potter or twilight reader next picks up a fantasy or scifi novel, or, just possibly, a piece of literary fiction. Gotta start somewhere

If you don't learn to love fiction as a kid, The pop culture acceptance of adults reading YA fiction gives you another route into the world of reading

Literature is not exhaustible, for the sufficient and simple reason that no single book is. A book is not an isolated being: it is a relationship, an axis of innumerable relationships.

no because there is now a never-ending stream of nonchallenging pap for this very market to buy in large quantities, they will never have to look outside of their comfort zone ever again

i actually, swear to god, started working on a supernatural teen romance novel several months ago and quit in disgust at what i was doing. there's a goddamn formula for this stuff but i just couldn't do it

earlier this week i threw together the first chapter or so of a bones+grimm thing because a supernatural csi book seemed like a natural fit for the current market, and i loathed it so much i had to stop

either the people doing this just don't know how bad their poo poo is, or they have stronger stomachs than i do

the hunger games books take like 2 hours to read each and have a pretty good critique on typical love triangle fluff, although it might be unintentional

the third book is so ridiculous i have no idea how they can turn that into a movie

the problem with american idol is that the idols are alive afterwards so people can realize 'wow these people are idiots american idol must all be fake' hunger games solves that problem

I guess that original guy was right then, the problem is length in a way. If it had stayed a trilogy there wouldn't have been a need to keep her plot on dry ice for so long.

the difference is that harry potter at least had identifiable characters and actual development instead of the enders game "choice" of NO CHOICE AT ALL FORCED TO DO ALL OF THESE HORRIBLE THINGS

i mean in the movie (and the book prob i dont remember) she drops a bee hive on a sleeping kid and doesnt even grimace. just up and does it. just another chore all this murder.

I guess the conceit in Ender's Game and Hunger Games and all that hinges on the idea of sanctioned killing versus murder (I don't really like either that much so)

I mean, outside of LF posting people don't think 'The US Air Force murdered 50 civilians today by dropping a bomb on a wedding party' It's sanctioned so it's 'a thing that just happened' and not something we demand accountability or heartfelt remorse for. We think of things like that as accidents or forces or nature and not deliberate choices made by people.

i think a lot of people force themselves to rationalize that kind of thing but its a bit different when youre talking about a piece of escapist literature that glorifies it instead of calling attention to the inherent hypocrisy and destructive nature of that kind of thinking

this is how people dismissed all scifi and fantasy fiction a couple of generations ago, the origin of the term "genre fiction." Scifi readers and authors grew out of it, together. Fantasy... We'll call fantasy a work in progress.

I'm just happy to have fiction be A Thing in pop culture again, and as much as I dislike the works in vogue I remain optimistic about their reader bases.
