I used to like Tvtropes, I've read far to many pages and still occasionally look up a movie I recently watched. Never participated on the forum though, it seemed like a dumb and horribly laid out place. Reading through this thread it seems like I was right on the money on that. To bad I missed the previous ones.
As stupid as it sounds, I also liked all of the nonsensical injoke names they used. Things went wrong for me when they started wanting to be a serious resource.

I do the occasional bit of internet amateur writing. I actually tried learning more about writing by looking at their notes and learning about tropes. Heck, I learned about Mary Sues from them. (Says enough about my quality prior)
It has made me a better writer (but then I also started reading more critically to see how better writers do things) and I can see that playing lego's with tropes to make a story is a bad horrible idea.
Complex motivation? That's the same thing as a guy with cool shades right?

Going into the forums for the first time at least confirmed my first impression of the thing. Such a horrible lay out. :(

In my revised version of Fafnir's Bane, the steampunk reimagining of the Volsunga Saga I'm working on, the third-person narrator for some sections is Heid, aka the wise woman or seeress from Voluspá who has a LONG memory and tells Odin of the coming of Ragnarok.
She's a giantess who remembers the time before the world began so she is obviously very old. Through magic she can see into peoples' minds and enter the dreams of the Völsung clan and their descendants. She also weaves the histories and lives of the Volsungs and other families descended from the gods into tapestries, kind of like the Nornir or Dísir.
How would I get across the fact that this woman is enormously old and immortal? Using old-fashioned, epic style of writing, like William Morris saga translations? She doesn't appear as a character in the story itself, only in the beginning prologue.
Let's add some steampunk, makes everything better. Maybe it's me underthinking things, but if you have an idea why not try it out and see what happens? I also see no real use in spending much time on a narrator you're never going to see again.
Anyway, let's see what happens.

answer posted:

For me, writing immortality is basically a justification for three things: an almost supernatural level of skill at the job (even moreso if the character isn't all that supernatural on his/her own), a very bad memory and a stalwart resistance to any change that isn't caused by the immortal him/herself.
The immortal in my WIP has all of the above qualities to show how being an immortal can colour a personality without the stereotypical traits of being wise, all-knowing and ironically regretful about his long life. He's a little unhinged from a few million years spent in isolation, but he has his morals, loves his job and can't even remember his own name or family.
But if you're just looking for some sort of seer-like character for the prologue, use all the ageless traits you can get across. Have her speak in cryptic language and give an appearance of vast intelligence. I'd say consider The Fog of Ages as a real possibility, but your character has a handy way around that. It certainly sounds like you're writing some sort of Shakespearean Norse epic, so make her as portentous as you possibly can. Get across that her words carry more significance than almost anyone else in the story. That's what would seem to fit your tale best, but you're the writer, so use your best judgment.

Just throw everything in, I'm sure that will work! Subtelty be damned.

"The Dozerfleet founder" is so compelling. I feel bad for him because his family are so hyperreligious in that creepy Bill Gothard vein, but I imagine he'd be an odd duck even without that.

Writing a huge wiki about yourself in the third person (mostly, every now and then he slips up) certainly takes commitment.

Crooked Rainbow posted:

The Crooked Rainbow is a term with three different meanings in the Dozerfleet lexicon. All three definitions refer to Marxist, radicalist, militant homosexualist causes and homofascism in some form or another.

Origin posted:

In 2006, the Dozerfleet founder argued against a classmate (now referred to exclusively as "the Evil Hair Maiden") that "straight" was a totally appropriate term, and that only the term "gay" was a misnomer, as many who are caught up in homosexuality are anything but happy with their lives. "Crooked" was proposed to refer to all of it in general, but specifically towards those who harbor malice for heterosexual society - and have expressed it through their actions.

In 2012, news reports of gay activists committing acts of terrorism in real life resulted in the Stop the Crooked Rainbow Campaign making its way to the Wiki. Handling of it was later given to the Wilinski Forest blog, which could handle issues with more brutal honesty than what is typically allowed under Wikia's policies. As of 2013, approximately 28% of all news stories on the blog deal with acts of homofascism or the devastating societal consequences of the gay agenda - things censored by mainstream media.

Organizations most commonly characterized as resembling the fictional Crooked Rainbow in Dozerfleet Comics include GLAAD, GLSEN, NAMBLA, and Occupy Oakland.

Uses in Dozerfleet Comics posted:

Stationery Voyagers was the first work to use the term "Crooked Rainbow" to refer to an organization. In this work's universe, "Crooked Rainbow" is a nickname for GLAAPC, the "Gay/Lesbian Alliance Against All Possible Criticism." It is portrayed as a sometimes-rabid, radical mob that stalks the Voyagers all over Mantith; wanting their heads for refusing to endorse gay causes. Their ultra-violent antics and aligning of themselves with the Drismabons has led to the Angelic Army of Minshus having to occasionally intervene to keep the group's antics of inadvertently destroying the universe, which they have almost done several times out of sheer spitefulness and contempt for the Voyagers. They even kidnap Oceanoe Hendelbin at one point, and inject him with reverse-Eros gas to turn him gay. When it doesn't work, but the toxin makes him very insecure and distraught anyway, they take him to a hideout and torture him sadistically. This leads to Filforth and Cherinob executing them, in order to secure Pinkell and Viola's rescue attempts while Minshus helps Oceanoe's mind heal from the torture and poison.
The Crooked Rainbow in this universe first arises when they learn that the Voyagers are Creationists. They automatically know that the Voyagers, especially Neone given her experiences with sexual slavery on Neothode, will never endorse gay causes. Rather than wait for Neone to say anything explicit to defy their will, they take the initiative by preemptively declaring war on her and all Stationery beings. There is no part of the planet they will not travel to in order to spread mayhem and demand capitulation to their causes - on pain of riots and vandalism if they don't get it. Long after revelation of the Drismabons' return causes the Paltaki Organization (a Planned Parenthood analog) and ACTBET to decide it's no longer worth it to terrorize the Voyagers, the Crooked Rainbow doubles down on its spiteful campaign.

He's one of the most threatening and disconcerting people I've ever met in my life and the picture painted by his "work" gives a pretty accurate picture of what he's like IRL. He has profiles on his wiki detailing the lives of random people from his collage program who never said more than a few things to him, and keeps records of girls who touched him +10 years earlier.

Been morbidly obsessed with his output since first meeting him.

Horror Hints: Read everything involved with "Dozerfleet music" for mondo serial killer shudders.

I don't think classmates like A Gnarlicious Bro can understand the genius behind the Dozerfleet founder's works. What about his seminal campaign concerning condom use? What Condoms Don't Protect You From

quote:

What Condoms Don't Protect You From is a PSA campaign that was started by the Dozerfleet founder in September of 2008, originally for the fall semester TV Production Writing class with Clayton Rye at Ferris State University.

The PSA scripts were written as a reaction to all the propaganda going on around the Ferris campus that promoted promiscuous sex and rampant condom use. The idea of condom-as-savior is simply wrong; but it's the prevailing message on many campuses. So the Dozerfleet founder dared to send a different message. Other students in the class had participated in some of that very propaganda, and word of this PSA campaign made them very nervous. Tensions only eased a very tiny amount when the sequel PSA was written for Broadcast Writing class in the spring semester of 2009.

What especially annoyed those other students was the "not so fast!" message it implied to them, calling many of them out for how unjustified they were in mocking abstinence education - or reducing it to straw arguments.

Have you accepted condoms as your personal savior?

quote:

The first of many clips in this ad shows a teenage girl curled up in shame on the floor. She looks up at the camera, and reminds the audience that paying for condoms on a regular basis costs as much as paying for cigarettes on a regular basis. The point being made is that condoms don't protect from lifestyle expenses.

I guess condoms are expensive when you're regularly having sex and not updating an insane wiki.

quote:

Another scene features another teenage girl, reminding audiences of just how specific the instructions are on the right way to use one. A condom cannot protect you from your own incompetence. The next scene features a basketball player that reminds viewers that a condom is only as good as the areas it actually shields. Numerous diseases can still be transferred if any infected area comes in contact with another host, including areas that are not shielded properly. So for some, and depending on the disease, a full body condom would be needed in order to shield from disease.

That's why all condom manufacturers include 300 page technical guides to help you encase your whole body in a latex leotard.

quote:

Another teenage girl comes on, complaining about how her boyfriend couldn't keep a secret. Condoms cannot protect your reputation. A minister comes on and reminds viewers that if they're under-aged, they have to betray everyone in their lives who is trying to protect them just to get what they think they want. Which could lead to trusting someone else who is untrustworthy. Not only is that foolish, but it involves dishonesty. Dishonesty and the guilt associated with it, and the consequences of such dishonesty and guilt, cannot be stopped by a condom.

Don't you stupid fuckers get it? Condoms only protect you from having babies!!!

quote:

A man caught by his wife cheating on him shows up in a divorce court, and reminds viewers that if you're caught in the act, the damage it will do to you cannot be stopped by a condom. A NASCAR driver then tells audiences that a car having an airbag is no excuse to drive like an idiot. Therefore, "why use a thin sheet of latex as an excuse to copulate like one?" This is followed up by an insurance salesman, who gives takes the sex industry's own statistics and throws those statistics right back at them. He points out that assuming the "99% effective" rating they give is accurate (which it isn't,) that means more than 100,000 or more customers per year in the United States alone are potentially being cheated by product defects. And in the game of recreational sex, product defects can mean death. A casino operator also mocks the statistics, comparing recreational sex to Russian Roulette.

Clearly, the solution is to ban condoms.

quote:

An offscreen narrator gets right to the point: "No condom can protect you from yourself." Text on the screen dissolves in, reading : "Self Control," while a girl off-camera with a "black" accent proclaims: "It’s priceless!" The scenery shows a used condom lying next to a tombstone. In fine print, the ad attributes its sponsors; saying that they provided they ad "to encourage healthy living."

"Has to be a black accent, turn away anyone with a white accent please." - Dozerfleet Founder

Anyway, I personally thought this campaign was pure genius. It's pretty clear to me that other people weren't ready to have their minds blown by the Dozerfleet founder, as explained by him:

quote:

Reactions were about as predicted they would be. Students who had been involved in more politically-correct ads were visibly uncomfortable with the existence of this ad script campaign. The one submitted for Clayton's class got the most strong reaction, with Clayton himself showing concern that the tombstone was "a bit cheesy and over-the-top." The second ad didn't cause quite as much of a scene. Part of this had to do with the fact that nearly every ideology imaginable was in COMM 385 in the spring of 2009, whereas a few too many students in the fall of 2008 in TV Production Writing class were dye-in-the-wool liberal.

In the end, Clayton summarized it this way: "While some of the messages in here are quite valid as concerns, good luck finding a network that would actually be willing to produce this. It's so politically incorrect, that it'd be career suicide for at least a few producers."

Goddamn liberals. :qq:

Blood Over Water is a mystery thriller television miniseries originally scheduled for release on the Ferris Access Channel for the spring season of 2010. It was created by television major and football player Chris Wilson and TV major student Cassie Tilne; and it was produced and co-wrote by the AMCl and David Stiefel. It formerly went by other working titles; such as Bogged, Mountain of Cabal and The Twin Conspiracy. On Thanksgiving Day, November 22nd of 2012 around 2:00 AM EST, it was successfully converted to red-cyan anaglyph 3D; and was also edited into a single film. A later 2013 re-release made for 3D as an optional feature in multiple formats.

After the Blogger version of The Dozerfleet Blog went offline, its written properties and brand were absorbed into Dozerfleet Literature. However, while the Blog may have been absorbed in this manner, Blog-relevant articles are stored in the "Memoirs" folder on Dozerfleet PCs. While the Blog operated on Blogger, it contained several articles that were originally threads on The Dozerfleet Forum.

Under the "My Documents" folder in Windows Seven PCs and the "Documents" subfolder of "My Documents" in Windows XP PCs, there are several folders. All these text folders are considered to be part of Dozerfleet Literature's domain, but not all of them directly so. There are folders that account for projects that were done for classes at both Lansing Community College and Ferris State University. Both folders thus contain projects that share some overlap with Dozerfleet Labs, particularly the PowerPoint presentations.
At the same time, Dozerfleet Literature shares responsibility for storing song lyrics with Dozerfleet Records and scripts with DozerfleetTV. The portion of Dozerfleet Labs that most often handles its own literature is its Utterly Sims imprint, which handles both literature and downloads for Sims franchise-related products.

The Albums Master was an icon library and file organization scheme, employed by the Dozerfleet founder during the Cormorant era. It is considered a project in the history of Dozerfleet Labs. It was used from 2003-2006, and was later replaced by the Dozerfleet divisions and Windows Libraries.

As the enterprise that is Dozerfleet began to grow more sophisticated during its Cormorant era, and more of its contents went digital, an advanced means of file organization became necessary. Simply developing the folder structure didn't seem like it quite cut the cake. So folders were given unique icons based on their contents. After seeing what was possible with Mac icons, the Dozerfleet founder wanted to implement something like that for Windows folder icons. Pictures, the first group to get a custom icon, wound up with a blue folder in keeping with OS X blue folders. Audio was next, getting a green folder inspired by the green music note inspired by iTunes 4.0. Video files were next. Since a film strip was used in the blue picture album icon, a VHS tape became the symbol for video. Text Albums got a "T" for "text," inspired by the "T" used for the Windows Fonts folder. The collection developed from there.

DozerfleetTV posted:

DozerfleetTV began as a part of the Albums Master, an icon collection created in the Cormorant era for coloring folder icons in PCs and Macs. After Cormorant changed its name to Dozerfleet, a different file hierarchy was officially adopted. Control of the maps for projects fell under the discretion of Dozerfleet Comics, which would also oversee labels and random content. Web Albums were sent to a "warehouse" folder shared by the different divisions called "Dozerfleet Web." This warehouse folder would store all content for websites for Dozerfleet main, for Dozerfleet Comics, and for the wikis.

What's hot this year: May 2006 posted:

All projects stored under various project names were instead redirected. Since this was still done on XP, everything was in the My Documents folder. A "My Text" folder was created from there, and from there, Dozerfleet Literature was defined as the place to store all text files of projects, with subfolders for each project. This process was repeated so that all former Cormorant images that were relevant to the new Dozerfleet operations would be placed in appropriate sub-folders for images. The image warehouse would come to be known as "Dozerfleet Comics," which would also be the brand imprint for franchises such as The Gerosha Chronicles and Stationery Voyagers.
