Speaking of, once I got back from Tokyo, I showed my mother the yukata that I had purchased and she says approvingly: "That's a really cool pattern - it's not like you went and bought it from Takashimaya..." Yep, I bought yukata at Takashimaya. It was expensive.

Look, if you are in a normal retail place here: A supermarket, conbini, whatever, don't worry about throwing down a man for a pack of gum. The only places that are going to have trouble with that are small restaurants and mom and pop stores.

I just pulled out the 500 yen coins from my change box. I had 80,000 yen worth of the drat things. I probably have another 40,000 yen worth of the rest of the coins. Decent way to save some money, actually!

Is there any legitimate reason as to why Japanese customs is holding up my order for 2 boxes of 36 count Trojan Magnum condoms? EDIT: To avoid double posting, I'll answer my own question. Apparently, condoms count as cosmetics. The maximum number of cosmetics that are allowed when shipped are those up to 24 pieces. Since one box of condoms is 36, they'll allow it. But because their are two boxes, they'll only allow one of them to go through. The other will be trashed by customs. Luckily, Amazon is willing to refund me for half my order. Looks like I'll have to ship separately next time... BambooTelegraph fucked around with this message at 07:32 on Nov 5, 2013 |

Yeah, a mate went through that last year. The reason he was given is they're classified similar to medicines, so you can only import a one-month supply (31). But, as you've struck upon, if the box contains more than that they'll let it through. Still not sure why my bag of 144 repacked condoms was allowed through, but whatever.

On that, who has gotten protein powder shipped in and is it an issue? I remember hearing conflicting things... I normally just split an order with my buddy here in town, but he's got tons left and I'm due to re-order soon. The Japanese stuff sucks poo poo, that's for sure.

If you order too much at once you'll get some tariffs, but not too much and it's still cheaper and better than buying in Japan.

Going to Shin-Yokohama for work end of the month, will have two full weekends to myself. Arrive on Saturday and hang out with friends/colleagues in Yokohama, Sunday Yoyogi Park to see the rockabillies and shop in Tokyo, next Saturday Kamakura and then I still have a Sunday left. Any suggestions? I would prefer not to travel too far. As much as I loved staying in Kyoto during my last visit I don't plan to take the train there for just one day. Already did Hakone and Nikko, something new would be nice. Also, can anyone recommend a whiskey shop somewhere in Yokohama/Tokyo? I wouldn't mind buying at Narita airport if they have a decent selection and pricing, so far I only tried Nikka from the barrel so practically any place where I can try and buy would be great.

There's the Tokyo Whiskey Festival on 11/17 if you're in town then. http://whiskyfestival.jp/ Liquors Hasegawa offers whiskey samples (for a price!) http://www.liquors-hasegawa.com/hpgen/HPB/entries/3.html For your free day, I would certainly recommend Asakusa & the Skytree if you haven't been. Or Ueno park. And there's always Mt Fuji. Lots of celebratory goods right now since it became a world heritage. Sidenote, are you in the biotech industry? (I ask because that's why I'm living near Tokyo right now)

Fair enough most ALTs have their parents forward everything instead of using Japanese clinics. Too embarassed to have your mom send the pill, what else can you do ???!!!! (Get out of your English bubble and use gestures, simple sentences and a dictionary.) Also, the morning-after pill is NOT available otc here. Whoever the prefectural JET counselor or whatever is will definitely get a panicked email about all of these problems because people don't like reading up on things themselves. Btw giving birth is 100% reimbursed (about 40man = USD 4000) under all insurances.

I Made sure to pick up at least 2 while I was stateside. Just in case. Honestly, I think they're worth their weight in gold, at least in rural areas. While Japan does have the pill. It's not like they allow access to the wealth of birth control that you might find in Canada or the US.

For someone who wants to travel to Japan and stay for X amount of weeks in an immersion accelerated language program, what are some of the best/top-rated programs or highly recommended language institutes in the country? Also, is it advisable to stay in Tokyo to study Japanese or would it be better to travel out to a more rural area for language immersion and to avoid English? If it's not a big difference, I think I'd rather stay in Tokyo or Osaka or another large city, but my first and primary commitment (besides my "day job" of copywriting over the internet) would be learning the language practically (ie getting to use my Japanese outside of class on the street) and effectively.

Tokyo and Osaka are both good choices. You will find English in major cities but there's still a ton of opportunities during your day-to-day to be immersed in Japanese, you jus tmay encounter more people who want to try their English on you. And although I don't know one to recommend, your likliehood to find a Japanese language course aimed at foreigners is higher in major cities than rural areas. Going rural isn't bad either, just be aware that certain places have very strong dialects (for example, in Okayama you find the Okayama dialect even in newspapers). And to that extent Osaka/Kyoto you may also run into their dialects. In Tokyo you'll hear hyojungo which is your standard Japanese you would hear on TV news.
