Uh, you poor guy. I'm going through the same thing, sort of, but in a way it hurts me even more. All 3 of my cats were rescued from the feral colony near my apartment building - Valentina and Prima were about 3 months when I took them in the first week of August and took a good month to seem comfortable. Alexandra I brought in on 29 September (I actually caught her by hand) and she took to being a housecat within about 3 days - she's just about 12 weeks now.

On Monday night I came home as per usual and Valentina got out. I'd never seen her try before in all the time she's lived with me, and at first I was just a little annoyed. Thing is, she bolted and she won't come back. I see her outside my apartment and if I get anywhere close she flees. This is an animal that fell asleep on my stomach on Sunday and now treats me like I'm going to eat her alive. I've been fighting back tears for days and I miss her, but I also feel like a bad cat daddy even though I spoiled her rotten for three months. I almost feel now like I held her prisoner for 3 months even though she never showed any inclination to escape, and I can't remember the last time I was this sad. Semi-logic says that she still had a lot of feral instincts and that once she got outside she reverted, but I still feel horrible and I miss her terribly even though she was a whiny little poo poo. If she's happier living a wild life outside then I guess that I should let her go. She's spayed and vaccinated so she won't be having any kittens, but she's also chipped.

There's no real point to this post, I am just very very sad and both empathize and sympathize with the previous poster.

:( Ah, that sucks, man; I (kind of) know how you feel. For the first week, there was a cat the same color as mine that kept darting around in the bushes around my house but wouldn't let me get near, and I thought he was mine. It turns out he was just a stray kitten (we never did catch it and it's gone now, but it was awful to think that my cat was right outside but for some reason just wouldn't let meget close.
If your cat's still around, and you really want him back, you could always try to trap him like a regular feral cat and see if you can re-domesticate him (he probably has reverted).

A lot of cats are nervy dickheads about being approached by their owners when outside. Even Decoy, who adores me, is an rear end in a top hat who will sprint away from me at top speed or dart JUST out of reach if I approach him outside. He has to approach me on his own terms otherwise there's no way I can catch him. This is usually achieved by weeding for a few minutes and he comes up to see why I'm digging around in the dirt.

So try not to take it too hard that your cat won't let you grab him outside - it doesn't mean you're a bad, mean cat-haver. This won't help you immediately, but when you finally get your jerk back inside you should clicker train all three of them to come to the sound of the clicker. We get a lot of earthquakes so I wanted a way to get te cats to me ASAP if we had to leave quickly, and now it's so ingrained that even when scared (Hugo slipped outside during Guy Fawkes) the click still penetrates their fuzzy noggins.

He'll run if Tinker walks towards him too fast, and he sometimes does a light hiss and growl/ It's pretty tame as far as play-fighting is concerned, and I don't think they'll have any real fighting or anything, but is there a way to get Remi not so scared of Tinker besides just giving them time? Are there any bad habits I want to break now?

What's that there, then? Oh.
Christ on a bike, I'm in a mortal panic.

I've been feeding a feral lady for some time (named Dani) and we've become pretty good pals. I was hoping to get her spayed before now - I won't go into the full story, but I ended up in hospital suddenly and in that time she got pregnant. I don't have any direct experience with queens but am an experienced cat owner. When I got out of stir, I wanted to catch her to take her for spaying but I couldn't be sure if she was still pregnant or nursing a litter, plus I was still very incapacitated.

Anyway, she very obviously give birth about 2 weeks ago - holy shrinking kittie! I couldn't get her spayed then as it was likely she had a litter somewhere.

In the meantime, she started coming in more often for an hour or so and then going off to nurse her bambinos.

Well, about 10 minutes ago I was formally introduced to baby and have had to take them in.

My plan is to put Dani and baby on lockdown. I'm currently letting her settle in the spot she feels most comfortable in and maybe when I go to bed I'll set her up in the spare bedroom overnight with food, waters and catloo (and comfy beddy byes). I have two cats that have met her before and as long as I'm here to supervise, I don't forsee any major drama (pleasepleaseplease).

So baby is about 2 weeks. Dani and I are in the early stages of our friendship. TOUCH WOOD REALLY A LOT, but baby seems fine (Dani also seems fine and is an experienced mum, bless her). They're currently relaxing on the rug under the dining table. Dani is fine with me handling the little one.

Here's my question: It's late here in the UK now, but should I take them to the vet tomorrow? I don't want to disturb mum and babe unless absolutely necessary.

I hopefully have potential homes for them to go to, and I may even keep Dani (baby will also be hard to resist).

You might want to leave her access to the outside in case there are more kittens that she needs to move in. 1 single kitten is not very common. Feel her belly, if she's full of milk she may indeed only have 1, if she's not bursting she likely has more.

When I moved to the new apartment, there were a lot of windows, so I decided to get some house plants because I love house plants They ate my Gerber Daisy. They ate my spider plant. No matter where I put them or what I sprayed on them, they found a way to reach and devour my plants. I don't really want to become the crazy cactus lady, and I don't want to get a plant that would harm them, they have already proven uninterested in cat grass, so what I need are recommendations from people who aware of plants that are safe for cats, but not desirable to cats. I haven't sorted that myself either so I'm not much help. They ate my fern and my spider plant (I checked first that they were safe) and they even tried to nibble my cactus so don't go that route either. If they couldn't eat it, they would dig in the pot.

You might want to keep your cats well away. A nursing queen can be very very violent if she feels her kittens are threatened. Are their eyes still shut though? Generally we go by eyes and if they're trying to wobble about to roughly judge kitten age.

She has been coming in so frequently that my others are not too bad with her. I've been keeping a close eye on things and experienced mum seems pretty relaxed (everyone's sort of asleep right now).

Biscuit, my boy, has been watching them and mum has been keeping an eye out and no major drama has occurred. I think she growled at him once, but is overall quite relaxed.

Babies' eyes are nice and bright and fully open. They are teetering around a bit but quite mobile.

Funny, my girl cat Honeybee, is her daughter from a previous litter. She's very sweet but is an incredibly shy cat with both people and other cats. For history: I've been feeding Dani for over a year, but it's only in the past 6 months or so that she's slowly been coming nearer to me. She brought me Honeybee when she (Honey) was about 2 months or so. Dani is a quiet cat, but not so shy once she trusts you.

I went to the shelter today and ended up picking up a new cat. Her name is Tonks. The shelter said she'd been there since August. I have no idea why nobody would take her, she's so laid back and affectionate, and she loves both people and other cats. I'm getting her spayed on Monday (she's about 2 years old, intact, probably has given birth) and getting her companion cat (an intact adult male she got along with well) then. Here's a picture!

The shelter says torties take forever to get adopted, but I have no idea why. She's a really friendly, laid back cat.

Aww, I love torties and have always found them to be laid back (and super pretty).

OK, crappy pic because it's gloomy here, I didn't want to alarm them and baby kitties = very wriggly.

This is Dani (mum), Johnny (on the left, spotted), Carl (the other one). Blurred white foot between them belongs to Dizzy, who seems to be the biggest. She is quite floofy. Johnny has a cute gremlin mew, Carl is quite sparky and Dizzy seems to enjoy teasing the other two. She pulled Carl's tail earlier.

They're currently shacked up on that cushion under my craft table.

They're quite large looking, 5 to 6 weeks would be my guess from the size and what you've said so far. She keeps on having litters from what you've writtrn so you might want to contact your local rescue groups for help homing these kittens (if you need it). Hit up cats protection for a neutering voucher to get her spayed free/cheaply - CP are mostly like a big corporation these days though so don't expect much from them outside the voucher. Smaller groups are more likely to be actually useful.

VoodooSchmoodoo

I do also have Rasczak in mind ;)

Yeah, I know CP is pretty useless at the mo'. My CP foster connection says my local group is down due to financial problems and my next local one is not doing pickups. They can also be a bit funny - my nice neighbour was turned down for adoption, but she's a perfectly fine cat owner and her other kitties (3 now) are very well cared for.

My vets do have a deal with them, so I can get neutering for donation only without having to go directly through CP. You just fill out a form saying the cat is a rescued feral.

For re-homing I may also contact all the vets around here first. They have worked out well in the past because they can put me in touch with previous clients - they have done this before anyway. I have a lot of vets practices around here, including my old Dr. Nate who might be helpful (he's now at another practice in the area).

They're all doing very well at the moment and yes, I think they are a bit older. They are tentatively starting to wean.

So yeah, as a quick update, I tried putting him on an all-fish, grainfree kibble, and his scratching and biting immediately skyrocketed so it was either something in the kibble or the fish itself. I returned that food and got him a really expensive duck and pork grain free kibble because he's a spoiled little poo poo and I love him.

Not only does he love it and inhale the stuff, but almost right away his problems are starting to clear up. He's still biting and grooming a bit, but it's far less than he has been this past week or so. I also changed his litter from a corn-based to a pine pellet kind, and I don't know if it was just the food or both of those things, but I'm not going to mess with a good thing and change anything now.

What do you guys think of the Evanger's cat food? The ingredients seem really good, and there are some good reviews online of the specific flavor I'm feeding him ("Beef it Up!") but I've also read some shady things about the company in general, too. It all seems to relate mostly to the dog food they make, though, so maybe the cat food is fine.

Any tips on getting a new cat acquainted with higher quality foods? I was starting to get worried about Tonks because I couldn't find anything she was willing to eat (I tried Orijen dry food, Solid Gold dry food, and Blue Buffalo wet food). She'd just sniff it and walk away, even though she acted hungry and ran to me when she heard the bag shake or can open. Finally, I remembered that my roommate had some Meow Mix in his closet, so I tried that, and, of course, she loves it. I'm guessing it's what the shelter feeds their cats. I know via the OP to introduce a new food incrementally, but what if your cat won't eat anything higher than Meow Mix quality? Will mixing the two still work, or will she just eat around the non-Meow Mix? Am I just gonna have to keep buying more and more different bags of cat food until I find out what she'll eat, or is there a way to coax her into eating what I already have?

Ya, I don't recommend Evanger's due to the shady poo poo the company has been caught doing. Salmonella recalls pale in comparison to, you know, claiming Pheasant and just using chicken instead, because it raises the question of what else are they lying about?

Speaking of salmonella recall companies, EVO makes Duck cat food, and their wet was not a recall problem, so you could see if that works.

Natural Balance then has a duck and green pea dry diet.

Zandrov, as far as getting a cat to eat new food... They're one of the animals that will starve themselves instead of eating something they're picky over. If you mix food, cats will generally eat around the stuff you want them to eat, but it's worth a shot. Otherwise, yup, keep trying different brands. Sometimes you can add things like broth or meat juice to new foods to entice them, and then slowly wean them off the additive, but that doesn't always work.

You have to make a slow transition. Start with 1/4 new food under 3/4 old food, move on to 1/2 old food over 1/2 new food, etc. The transition shouldn't take longer than a week.

You've got a flea infestation and you're going to have 20+ people over in a few weeks? I hope you win that war, because I'd be super pissed if my cats got fleas because someone invited me into his or her home as a guest and failed to tell me that fleas might be present. At least give people a warning so they know not to take any bags inside and check their clothes when they get home. But then they wouldn't want to come, would they?

What a pickle. I'm not a homemaking pro, but it seems like poor etiquette as a host/hostess to expose your guests to fleas. If this is about saving face, you might have to bite the bullet and use an outside venue, like restaurant, hotel, or church gym. If you can't, at least call a real exterminator as soon as possible.
