Plus I don't know of any shops that have scored dealer returns. I mean doesn't take away from your point that 10k is overpriced but the 5 or 6k you quoted seems atypical.

http://fortcollins.craigslist.org/mcy/4161253548.html Ahaahahahaaahaa! I mean, I don't really know piss about Ninjas, but that just reeks of bullshit. I do know the 10R is a 998, not a 1098, though. edit: Let's invest in motorcycles: They have a little higher top end due to this bike being torqued down one, for more torque.

For some inexplicable reason, I really want an eighties touring bike. I was originally set on restoring my dad's old GL1100, but he needs to dig it up out of the barn first, so that's not happening anytime soon. I'm a bit leery on this 83 Yamaha Venture, but for 600$ it's definitely tempting: http://columbus.craigslist.org/mcy/4138209973.html The good: Cosmetically looks alright, cheap. He wants to sell the bike to get an RV. The bad: Engine doesn't idle well, which to me says carb cleaning/rebuilding. I spoke with the owner to clarify the second gear issue, and apparently the bike doesn't want to shift into second/grinds when it does, which to me says clutch adjustment or new plates. Is this a bigger warning sign? Also needs a new battery, the old one won't hold a charge, but should start the bike when charged. The ugly: It's an 80's bike that has been up on craigslist for over a month at a cheap price. I can't help but feel I'm about to get in way over my head...

The problem described is likely just a clutch issue, but there's a haunting 2nd gear issue with the earlier Ventures where the gear dogs grind down and start slipping out of gear under hard revs. This will require a transmission repair, and if the bike has that problem is expensive, difficult, and time consuming to fix. Not every bike had that problem, but I don't think I'd spend any amount of money on one that has it, or has a condition (such as being unable to easily shift into 2nd gear) that prevents me from testing to see if it has it.

If you really want a vintage bike it's always always better to spend near the top of the price range for a bike in good condition vs. one that needs work because usually the price differential isn't that great. I bet $2k could get you an 80s touring bike in ready to ride condition. $1500 in time/money isn't a hell of a lot to spend on an old bike if it needs work.

It's going to be snowing here soon anyways, and a big heavy bike is realistically the last thing I need to take out in the snow anyways. I just need to find another project to fuel my crazy for a few months... maybe this would be a good time to pick up a MIG welder...

How is this for a first bike? http://stlouis.craigslist.org/mcy/4122331270.html I'm keeping an eye out on the slew of overpriced ninja 250s, sv's etc. but came across this. Seems pretty perfect for lengthy commute and some day/weekend touring that I'm interested in doing.

Russian Bear posted:How is this for a first bike? http://stlouis.craigslist.org/mcy/4122331270.html It's a GS/adventure type bike, so it's a little tall if you're shorter to get used to, but nothing overwhelming. It's a fairly light bike, something like ~420 lbs wet, especially when compared to every other adventure tourer in their lineup. BMW parts prices can be stupid on some things. The single cylinder gets a little weezy at higher highway speeds (~80+) but it's not scary or anything. The motor/bike itself has been around almost unchanged for over 20 years and has a pretty fervent cult following, so parts availability and knowledge isn't too much of an issue. http://faq.f650.com/main.html Actually looking at picking one up for an off road/fuckoff bike as well.

Is that a bad deal in the US? Sounds like its too good to be true as an Aussie. Throw some fairings on it and you've got a nice enough bike/track day weapon. You'd be looking at at least 2 - 3 times that in AUS for one of those.

Russian Bear posted:How is this for a first bike? http://stlouis.craigslist.org/mcy/4122331270.html I had an '06 for a number of years. It was a nice bike. Reasonable power (though you had to keep it revved up, for a thumper it had no low-end grunt), excellent gas mileage. I see that one has a windscreen on it, that was one of my biggest complaints about mine, and I'm short. It was really tiring getting blown around constantly. I think it would be an excellent first bike.
