Why are all these utility companies getting into the home security business anyway? I got a call a few weeks ago from Time Warner Cable about their new home security service and it all just seems super weird. Who decided that this was the market of the future?

According the stats I think it was 60% of households don't have home security, so they think there is a lot of opportunity to take over, and that now offer the home automation stuff will help too.

Digital life guy came to town and told us 1 in 5 have home security, and only 1% of houses have home automation. So it's an untapped market. It's never necessarily been expensive to do it. No company really got into it.

I will say though, (although I am biased) AT&T's automation end of things is actually pretty cool. It's definitely one of the cheaper ones out there and doesn't seem like a piece of poo poo.

The product and price are overall fine. I thought monthly payments for live video was crazy, but that's one of the bigger things people are interested in. Honestly, the tough part is there is just a huge bridge to cross to get someone walking into a cell phone store interested in it.

I do also think it's handicapped by requiring the home security, but I can understand it wouldn't be worth it for $5-10 a month.

Comcast is also being crazy aggressive on it. I've had a few people who just got free equipment and something like a year free for their version.

I find your lack of faith disturbing.
I'm an Android user considering switching from Verizon to AT&T because A) I'm tired of the VZW / Google pissing match that always screws the users over, B) I somehow don't get Verizon service in my goddamn 27th store apartment in the middle of a major metropolitan area, and C) There's no Verizon-capable Nexus 5 (See point A). I'm a US military member, which qualifies me for a 15% service discount (not sure if there is a device discount or not, the AT&T website seems to be awful about actually giving me prices for poo poo).

My questions are as follows: If I buy a $400 32GB Nexus 5 and enroll in a 4 GB or 6 GB data plan, will my subsidized phone be available in the future if I want it? Or will I have to wait two years, even though I never bought a subsidized phone? Is it worth buying the Nexus 5 for $400 and paying a lower price for the phone contract over buying the $75 HTC One that I see advertised on the site (or a Galaxy S4, a Moto whatever, etc.) and paying the greater service price?

I would love to check this out myself, but the business portion of the site sucks. Thanks for the help!

You absolutely can get a Nexus and sign up on ATT, it is no contract on that point and you keep your upgrade for whenever you want.

People will say buy an iPhone 5S as the contract phone and flip it on eBay to make up for the subsidy you are not getting. If you want to do that, it would be a bit extra money in your pocket for a 2 year contract. Note that the ATT $100 trade in is back, so you can trade in most smartphones and get a $100 towards your purchase.

You can only get a mobile share individual plan, so FYI you are looking at something like:
$50 for 2GB
$45 for line
15% off of $50 = $7
Total: $95 - $7 + tax

There is a 1GB and 4GB too depending on your usage needs. I don't think military waives activation fees, so you will have that ($36) either way.

So, if I'm reading this right, the price for my service is going to be the same, regardless of whether I subsidize a phone or not? That's... unfortunate.

Can some AT&T goon help me here? Quick background:

My wife has AT&T and her monthly bill is $75, like clockwork. I recently added a non-contract (BYOD) plan to hers. Got 5gigs w/tethering ($50) and add a line ($9.99). Math tells me that's $59.99 before taxes and fees. We have a 23% FAN discount which should knock the added line down to $38 or so pre-taxes/fees.

Our next bill is showing as $210.06, a full $135 more. What is causing it to be so high? Also, I know I had a $36 activation fee...but our bill should be $75 + $38 = $113 + taxes/fees from now on, right? Just curious how it's $210. There is some funny business going on with the data plans, as shown below.

If $210 or even $174 is our new rate (took off the $36 activation fee) that's a full $100 more, not $38. Does the $38 for my line become $48 after taxes? Even then, it's $123, which even including the $36 activation fee (making the first bill $159 according to basic math) doesn't explain $210.06.

I know the numbers aren't precise, but I'm prepared to cancel my line and go back to my $30 T-Mobile prepaid plan if I'm facing significantly more than $38 more a month for my line.

Thanks

FAN discounts only apply to the primary line of service. It does not apply to secondary lines.

$36 activation fee.

And proration. When you activate a line with AT&T in the middle of a billing cycle, your next bill will be the partial time you had the phone active during that cycle, and the bill for the next month of service.

No worries. Overall the job is fine and since it's Union there is only so much they can enforce on you. Be prepared to be selling new stuff like home security, be prepared to sell stuff whether you like the product or not, basically just keep an open mind. Basically AT&T feels it won't get much more growth out of cell phones, so it is trying to expand elsewhere.

For you, it was the last time you would ever post in YCS. But for me...it was Tuesday.
I've talked to three different AT&T people today and all have told me conflicting information, maybe someone here can help.

I want to buy an iPhone 5c as a gift to replace a beat to poo poo iPhone 4, which started off its own host of problems. I think I have most of them resolved (got the last 4 digits of her social without her realizing it's for an upgrade, etc). Wal-Mart is selling the 16GB 5c for 45 bucks this weekend if you sign up for a 2 year contract, so I called AT&T and gave her account info and asked if she was eligible for an upgrade. She isn't until May 2014 which makes no sense to me since the phone is definitely more than two years old, but whatever.

First dude I spoke to told me I can "tack on" 2 more years to her existing plan and get the phone for the 45 dollar sale price. That seemed like total bullshit so I called again, next guy said "you just can't upgrade it period, go to an AT&T store and hope for a sale" and basically didn't have anything else to offer. Third guy said I can go into the Wal-Mart during the sale, have them call AT&T from the store to help set up the 2 year contract and override her upgrade date or something, and everything from there will be hunky-dory. He put a note on her account for the next rep that gets a call to let them know that this is what I am doing.

It still sounds fishy, and I suspect I'm going to go in and the store will call AT&T and say it's only a partial discount or something. When I tried calling Wal-Mart, they didn't even remotely understand what I was trying to say. By any chance have any of you ever upgraded your phone early through a non-AT&T store and had it go smoothly?

Assuming that works I still dunno how the transition will go. Is there a way to make it so the phone won't activate until I actually give it to her, preferably around Christmas?

This is a lot of jumping through hoops to save like 50 bucks, but she is resistant to upgrading her phone even though I know she would like a new one so I'm trying to make a surprise and this deal seems like the best thing to jump on at the moment.

It sounds like the account is in her name and creating a 2 year responsibility for someone else is a lovely present. If you can't afford to buy the phone at full retail, then abandon this idea of "surprising" her with a new commitment (which is fraud/illegal).

If the account isn't in your name and social security number then you aren't on the hook if things go south. Its cool that you pay the bill but no legal repercussions come your way if it isn't. Are you an authorized user on the account?
I've been doing this 6 years. Your best bet is to get something noted on the account by customer service and visit a COR store to have them execute that. Good luck.

I didn't think it would be that uncommon for phones to be bought as gifts, but I guess I didn't consider the situations where you are obligating someone to pay for a contract. When most people buy phones as gifts is it the full unsubsidized price/unlocked? Yikes.

It's tricky because of how conditioned the US is to subsidized phones. Deep discounts mean contracts. And contracts as meant to be kept and enforced by legal means.

Off contract phones are very affordable these days, but not if you insist on the latest iPhone. They are always going to be priced outrageously.

Nexus 5 ($349), Moto G ($179), Lumia 520 ($69 on Amazon right now) and so on. The barely used market is where I get mine (swappa) but it would admittedly be rude to gift a used phone. Wouldn't bother me though since once you take a new one out of the box and turn it on it's used. I guess if you need to use the warranty (never have) then yeah, new is best.

But yeah, if iPhone is the one and only option, it's basically a new contract or rapey retail price.

Anyone have any information about when AT&T will get the Galaxy S4 Mini? My wife and I are on her dad's family plan and we're coming up on the two year mark. Dad-in-law doesn't plan on upgrading but we do - he wasn't sure we'd be able to if he doesn't but I'm looking into available phones anyway.

I like the S4 fine but my wife thinks it'll be too big, we have S2s currently and I guess the Mini will be about the same size as the S2. If it's out on AT&T by the time we have to make the decision, that is.

Huh, that does look like a good option. I guess I got a bit of tunnel vision looking at the S4/HTC One/Nexus 5 for myself, didn't look at other phones until she said she wanted something not big-as-possible.

Looks like it's $50 right now through AT&T, is it possible to get the 32gb version through them or would I have to go through MotoMaker and pay $150? I'm not sure the extra cost is worth it, even if it doesn't have a microSD.

Advice:
1. Phone gifts in general are much, much better as a surprise if you do "hey, let's go somewhere I am not telling you" and then "surprise! It's a new iPhone you get to pick out!" (That being said, I will agree make sure she is able to get said discounted phone first).

Just overall, between the hassle that you see purchasing and activating and such without her there, it's better to just get it done with her there. Every time.

2. Your bigger issue is that she might be in contract. Even with an older 4, she could have potentially broken it say, 6-18 months ago, went in store and was told she could get a new one for $0.99. If anything like that happened that would be a two year contract.

3. ATT policy: by default, only the account holder is authorized to do ANYTHING or even view anything. The account holder has the option to add you on as an authorized user. If so, then you can make upgrades and plan changes. Right now your issue is you need info on whether she can get a discounted phone, and you're only going to get that as being an authorized user on the account and going into a corp store. However and whatever is up to you.

So for the record: most phone gifts are subsidized, but people don't connect the details in their heads correctly. So you can do the gift hopefully with a subsidy (whether now or when she is eligible) and have to only spend that $50.

The $100 difference makes it not worth it. Plus, with all the cloud storage services out there you should never have to worry about onboard storage.

Got it yesterday over the air. It's super smooth.

I have a problem with AT&T wireless, not as an end user per se, but as a recipient of their calls.

I am testing a new phone provider for my business right now, and one of the things I tested when I turned up the new service was inbound calls to our IVR system. Calls from AT&T wireless (and seemingly only AT&T wireless) produce DTMF tones that more than twice as long as any other inbound call. This causes a double DTMF on our IVR, making it useless. How do I even get started on a trouble ticket for something like this? The other carrier is not as helpful as I want them to be, which means that I probably won't purchase the service in the long run, but I still want to get this resolved.

Have you tested this with multiple phones? The manufacturer of the phone determines the length of the DMTF tone. Also, most IVR systems shouldn't register a long tone as two. Might want to check if there is a configuration you can change.
