Is there a list of traits that are still broken / don't actually do anything? I keep finding forum threads or wiki articles that say (for instance) "oh don't take Fast Learner, Skill Comprehension is broken and any value above 100% is useless," etc, but most of them are months old so I have even less of an idea what's still accurate.

EDIT: Did the knife-spear get nerfed to uselessness in 0.9 or did they just refactor damage numbers?

I mean I guess I'll find out after using one for a while but it'd be nice to have confirmation.

Yeah... I had an NPC in my evac shelter tell me to kill his zombified mom, he then proceeds to go on, what I assume to be, a several day rampage around the shelter. Seriously, until I finished the quest he was going from one animal to the next fighting them.

Then I turn in the quest and ask him to train me and he says "Let's go to a safe place." On the way there we (he) sees a bear and flips his loving poo poo again and gets himself mauled. Now I have an unfinishable quest in my log :(

It's funny how you can still dodge/block melee hits while you're sleeping. A sewer rat sneaked into my bedroom and started attacking me, but I was wielding a katana when I went to bed (as a goon should :v:) and kept blocking every single hit. I ended up gaining something like six levels of dodge from two of these encounters.

Speaking of sleeping, does 0.9 seem significantly laggier while sleeping/reading/waiting for anyone else?

EDIT: This might be a question of location rather than version, are there any monsters that generate way more calculations / tile alterations or something? Giant slugs, maybe?

Disassemble a torch flashlight and craft a lightstrip. They give enough light to read/craft by if they're in your inventory, and they last for months on a single 15 battery charge.

I don't know, but I'd butcher those corpses before they get back up, and thank god you basically won the Evac jackpot. Also, is this a brand new game? Have you ever stockpiled poo poo into a shelter before, that transfers over saves.

I think part of the revamp included making evac shelters have useful poo poo in them more often then never, but like basements, probably went a little too far.

Advanced inventory allows you to pick up partial stacks now. Drop the item on the ground, use advanced inventory to move it and you should be able to specify how much you want to move.

Also what the hell is up with that basement.

There is now a small chance that an evac shelter will spawn with zombies and a bunch of loot in it. The idea being that there is a risk/reward for taking on the zombies early to get at the loot. However, given how easy it is to lure the zombies upstairs and clobber them while they climb over a counter, it's a bit unbalanced at the moment.

When you're in the drop menu you can type a number before the letter of the item you want to drop for partial stack drop. But / is pretty convenient too.

How do you guys like your guns? I want to try out bows on this character, but apparently they're more suited to medium-range fighting than sniping, so I'll get a nice sniper rifle for that. Rifles seem to have gotten more love in terms of variety and modifications too.

What about the rest of the guns, though? I remember reading about how handguns don't live up to their potential with how the game models combat and shotguns cause more trouble than they can solve thanks to their noise. Are SMGs worth holding on to even with good melee weapons?

Inadequately
Oct 9, 2012
With the very best bow and about 12 strength, bows can match the range of rifles. With enough mechanics skill you can also make pneumatic crossbows that the gun mods can be used on, although I'm not as much of a fan of those. Shotguns aren't that much of a problem in static mode, because there's a limit to how many zombies there are in an area. Handguns seem to do surprisingly little at times, but I'm of the opinion that any sort of ranged attack is better than melee unless you're really good at it. That said, you probably won't get much use out of archery until you can make heavy wood arrows at the very least, anything weaker does crap damage and has a high chance of simply bouncing off some of the heavier armored enemies.

That said I usually put most of my points in ranged stats so your experience may vary.

Handguns are perfectly valid weapons to use at very close range. Even without any skill I've found it's possible to kill mundane zombies with only one or two shots from a .45 so long as the zombie is only 1 or so tiles away or directly adjacent. Just look at them as a melee weapon with a greatly reduced possibility that the zombie will have the chance to take a swing at you, and SMGs are just handguns that you can fire way faster.

So long as you don't go waltzing into the dead center of a town or otherwise aren't able to outrun zombies, weapon noise isn't ever that big of a problem.

Having a shotgun ensures that if you ever do get into an 'Oh poo poo' situation, you have something that will pretty much annihilate anything in your path.
Using it as a default weapon when scouting for supplies isn't advised, especially if you're undetected, but when a Hulk is in your face a shotgun will take it down no trouble.

Personally, I carry a sawn-off that gives you a low volume shotgun with two shots you can get out and blow away something heavy if it stands in your way.
At very long ranges a high powered rifle totally outclasses a bow in range and damage, and with some skill you can take out hordes from 60~ tiles away. I've levelled rifles with the Pneumatic Crossbow and then with a Savage 111F could accurately hit zombies at max range, with a pause to let recoil go down.

I think the realistic max range of best bows/arrows and 12 strength is around 30 tiles. Compared to a rifle I think you max out at around 75. (Which is further than you can see typically)
SMGs are cool when used in burst fire as intended. You can target up to around 3 zombies and maybe kill them all with a good burst SMG so they certainly have their uses. They also eat ammo very quickly.
And as said before handguns are pretty much close range weapons but are still effective for normal zombies and better than melee on a ranged character.

I'd agree that Bows are very much a mid range fighting weapon than a sniper rifle.

I started playing this on 0.8 and decided to check out 0.9. Is there any reason that the new default tileset on 0.9 is so much smaller? Is there a way to make it bigger? I've changed the viewport size but that hasn't helped. I liked the size of the default tileset on 0.8 (Deon?) but I guess it hasn't been updated in a while so it's missing quite a bit.

I know I can change 0.9 to deon but I figured it's better to stick with whichever one will be more up to date.

Tilesets are still behind but are getting better. I'm still not sure which you're on but SirHoder's has been supplanted by Tsutiles made at 16x16 so they should give you a wide view field. I don't use tilesets so someone else might be able to help more.

They should probably take out the bug that lets you dodge/block while sleeping. I set up a base in the shelter, and lured a sewer rat in. In the day I shut him in the basement and go about my work, and in the night I equip a pipe and let him out. it's been a few days and my dodge is over forty now. I'm considering clearing out the rest of this city with melee only.

VVV Well, I usually play ranged characters,so I rarely ever even consider dodging. If anything gets close enough to hit me, I'm probably doing something wrong.

Yeah, I always delete the world when a character dies. Most of the fun is at the start I've found, dropping on a load of good gear just spoils it for me.

Then again, there are people who make characters purely to run into town to grab loot and stash it for other characters... twinking in a roguelike, bloody sacrilege!

For the first time ever since I started playing this game, I've finally managed to make a character which survived long enough to think about building a vehicle (thus my question about the solar cells). I wasn't able to find any answers to the following questions on the Cataclysm wiki and would appreciate your replies on the same.

1. Is there any benefit to installing more than one car battery in your vehicle?

2. Does the battery and/or gasoline tank need to be installed next to the engine?

3. Should engines be installed on the inside of the vehicle or on the outside / perimeter of the vehicle?

4. Is there a difference in speed, fuel consumption and/or maneuverability if your vehicle has smaller wheels vs larger wheels?

5. Is there a difference in speed, fuel consumption and/or maneuverability if your vehicle has less wheels vs more wheels?

6. Is there any downside to installing as many solar panels / storage batteries as you can find?

That one's easy. The turrets only fire if you're 24 tiles or less away from them. Stand 25 tiles away and fire at them with any rifle. Don't forget to let the recoil run its course between shots.

1.Yes, it increases storage capacity, more solar panels increases recharge rate.

2.No, they can be placed anywhere you're capable of installing them in the vehicle. (Unless something has changed incredibly recently)

3.I prefer to install them inside so they're protected from collisions.

4.I don't believe so, but I'm not a 100% on that.

5.As long as you have the minimum number needed I don't believe there's a difference, but having more is nice for redundancy.

6.I'd save some solar panels for repairs instead of slapping them all on, because they'll shatter at the slightest tap, but there's no real penalty for it.
