Am I better off grabbing 5 comms of heroism from the second raider's box, or another CitW weapon? I'm leaning towards the commendations, because I can then upgrade my Cleaver and get closer towards the commendations needed for dragonscale armour, but I don't know if getting another weapon might be better long run (though I'm not really sure what weapon would be worth taking).

What happens in the course of duty is up to you...
I'd go for a weapon. You can run Fall of Truth and get 1 commendation per run for sure. It's entirely possible you won't see a weapon you want from CitW in 5+ runs even though the drop rate is pretty solid on Normal (for weapons, commendation rate there blows). The first tier of weapon unlocking is super nice though since if you've got a good trinket it's +4 stacking hit/damage and 15 PRR which is great.

I guess if you're not going to TR much and you're happy with the weapon you picked (I forget which but I assume Cleaver, Breach or Sireth), then Commendations are going to be more useful overall.

As for what weapons to pick: Sireth if you like quarterstaves. Cleaver if you want regular melee DPS. Breach if you want fancier melee DPS. Pinion if you're ever going to do a bow user (it's significantly better than any other option). Needle if you're going to do an Artificer or Mechanic main build. Twilight if you're gonna do a caster. Everything else isn't overly worth considering unless you've already got those really.

Yeah, I already grabbed a Cleaver and I picked up a Needle on one of my CitW runs. I don't have one of the trinkets yet, but hopefully I'll get a good one at some point. I think I might hold off on making a decision - I just epic reincarnated, and will heroic TR later today, so there's no real rush to make a decision I guess. Just thankful I got a second box really.

I took another pass at my previous build and further focused the Enhancements. I maxed out Wand Mastery and anything having to do with strength while raging as well as picking up Divine Might. I removed some rage supporting stuff as well as the half-orc power attack enhancements because I didn't think they would have as much value as stronger heals, an extra attack, and something to do with my spell points.

I'd like to get the Power Attack and Wand Mastery enhancements, but there just aren't enough enhancements unless I sacrifice the core of the build.

Maybe I should do something where I pick up the DR out of War Priest and the PRR out of WP/Ravager? I'm not sure what offers more survivability.

DR5/- isn't very much to be honest. That will be exceeded by a pretty small amount of PRR in epic levels quite quickly, because mobs there hit so hard. Early on, DR5/- is great. Later on...not so much. Of course, it's better than nothing, and combined with PRR it's certainly nice little boost, but it's hardly game changing and probably not worth the enhancement points to grab it if there's something else just as nice.

Thunderstone will also be incredibly poo poo unless you have a large number of rogue levels and high intelligence. A DC of under 30 is going to be pointless in epic levels, and it probably won't even be good before then either. The damage is pretty ordinary too. Power attack is amazing, and it's also a pre-req for cleave (which is itself a pre-req for Great Cleave, which is in turn needed for Overwhelming Critical). In short, there is no good reason not to take it, certainly not for some extra wand mastery.

5 DR in EH is around a 5-10% reduction in damage taken. In EE it's closer to 2.5-5% reduction. Sadly damage is lowered by DR before being lowered by PRR. So yeah, it's not game changing, but it does add up. So if you can free up points Wall of Steel and Resilience of Battle are both pretty solid, especially since Resilience is only one point.

I've got to eat my 3 mabar tomes before next proper TR but still not 100% on where to put them. At 4/4/4/5/3/3 str/dex/con/int/wis/cha so far and thinking con for easy epic toughness, str for easier OC on non maxed str lives and either cha or wis for the last. I do a lot of pally splits, and will probably be exploiting divine might a fair bit too but monks are so broken ATM it's making me think of doing more stun/QP builds. Dex I'll probably skip, might do some AA builds but just 1 dex instead of 2 wis seems kinda dumb. And if it's a huge deal I can just buy one when they're next in the store.

Still not fully understanding the new TRing. I'm a human ATM and want fast past lives, so planning on grinding comms and doing an ETR, after that I'll do a heroic TR and swap to an Iconic race. All seems fine there right? I'll get some fancy EPL and a Monk one too but then when I level back up to 28 things get weird. I Have to do an Iconic TR, and that means I have to take an Iconic PL instead of an EPL? I remember a dev saying you could pick Iconic or Epic but not sure now how it works on live.

You're level 28, on a heroic character. You have an Epic Heart and a Heroic Heart.

Use your epic heart, become level 20 with an epic past life feat.
AND THEN
Use your heroic heart, become level 15 with an iconic race and a heroic past life feat. And you're like this basically.

You're level 28, on an iconic character. You have an Epic Heart and an Iconic Heart.

Use your epic heart, become level 20 with an epic past life feat.
OR
Use your iconic heart, become level 1 or 15 (depending on race) with Iconic past life and heroic past life feat.

Yeah, so at 28 you can either:

1. Epic Reincarnate - everyone, set your level back to 20.
2. Iconic TR - True Reincarnation, but only for Iconic heroes. You can then start over at level 1 as a regular hero (and have the option of TR anytime post-20 you want), or choose another Iconic again (and limit yourself to level 28-only TR again for your next life).

Edit - I did the first scenario of what DemonMage wrote there, Epic Reincarnated from 28->20, then Heroic TR'ed in to an Iconic.

That only applies to your first time though. It's even easier to get a heart than before after that. Since just leveling normally from 20-28 gets you an Epic or Iconic heart everytime. Whereas Heroic hearts you don't get anywhere near enough Tokens of the Twelve. You have to spend serious time farming for them.

Woden

I was 23 when U20 hit and am halfway through 26 now with only 518 comms, so ~3.3 mill xp or so and only 518 comms, at that rate I'd hit cap on TRs with only 1k comms. I should pick better quests I guess and stop repeating the occasional quest but the grind looks pretty bad and not seeing how I'll ever get 4.2k comms before getting 6.6 mill xp.

I have probably near 1k tokens of the twelve, capped alts running epics/raids while I TRed meant I could always TR whenever I wanted but now I have to grind a poo poo load of macguffins each TR.

Fenris13
Jun 6, 2003
Yeah, no way you are getting 4200 coms by just doing 20-28, even if you received coms for 100% of your quest completions. Most people will end up with around 1500, far fewer if they are not optimal in their quest. It would take a max of 10 hours to grind out a regular old TR heart, where as the new hearts take 40-60, or say maybe 30 extra hours after doing 20-28. Overall I don't see this rate as healthy for DDO.

DemonMage

So there's 66 quests that are epicable and have CoVs as far as I can see. With an average of 25 commendations per quest (too lazy to add it up by hand, range is 12-36 CoVs per run on EH, 25-65 EE) that means 1650 commendations just running every quest once. Which isn't enough to hit level 28 with a Greater Tome and 3% experience shrine. So I'd say you should probably hit around 2000-2.5k. Which is still lower than intended (the intent is that leveling 20-28 on EH = 3800-4600 commendations or so).

DemonMage fucked around with this message at 08:55 on Nov 16, 2013

Fenris13

Two problems with that number though, the first is that getting an average of 25 com's per quest run means loading up on the higher level quests instead of the lower level ones which doesn't match up with actual data for two reasons, the first is that people tend to run quests that are lower level than they are, not higher and those rewards are much lower than 25, 15 for many of the more popular EH's. The other reason is a factor of time, you spend more time in range of lower level quests you are more likely to have run more lower level quests that higher level ones, only running stuff like storm horn line 2-4 times, vs 6-8 for stuff like the original motu trio.

Woden
May 6, 2006
When doing the 20-28 thing I also do heroics, well I used to not so sure about what to do now. Stuff like flagging for ToD/LoB, the level 19 chain and other quests in Eveningstar, maybe some IQ stuff if I skipped it etc. Good for 1.5 mill or so and no comms, explorers also used to be a good source of epic xp but no comms there either, same deal with sagas. Then there's the dumb ransack poo poo and having to turn in rather than pull from chest.

Heroic TRing was a pretty cool system that they didn't maintain and got away from them, this new one sucks. Grind comms in quests that have nothing else worthwhile, no good loot and no xp that you need.

Yeah sounds like they still need to mess with the CoV numbers, probably bump them up in an Update or two. *shrugs* Not a big deal, they've been doing what they can to reduce the direct grind in general, so it wouldn't surprise me if a minor patch even bumped up the numbers.

It's also a really simple formula to mess with too:
Multiplier*(QuestLevel - 17), where Multiplier = 2 for normal, 3 for EH, 5 for EE.

I'd rather than bump up the rewards, I'd rather they bump down the requirement. That way if you've got a freshly minted 28 and picked up the lower amounts of CoVs along the way, you're not going to need to run through a tonne of them again for the CoVs.

Ouch, that sounds really painful to farm (at least solo). It took me less than two hours for a heart through challenges a few weeks ago, so not even ten hours for heroic hearts if you like/can stand challenges.

I'm kind of regretting going half-orc for my rog/monk/druid staff build. There aren't enough APs for more than three quarters of the enhancements I want to take, and I'd rather have healing amp and an extra feat from human, I think. (Want the wand and scroll mastery in season's herald and some shintao, and while I'd love sneak attacks I don't think that is happening either).

Wait, which challenges give the tokens for hearts?

And yeah, I think we'd all like more AP to spend on enhancements :) That would make everyone's builds really crazy though, and would almost wipe out the need to actually group up for anything other than raids.

All Cannith epic challenge ingredients can be converted to tokens of the twelve. Most people farm the Extraplanar Palace or Lava Caves Time is Money ones. It's not too bad, just supremely boring and requires going out of your way. Which is why I like the CoV system, once it's fixed, since you just get it done leveling as normal.

Also there's no need to group for anything except raids... and every raid has been soloed at some point as well =-p Though doing Fall solo would be super irritating. It would be cool to at least be able to do Tier 5 in two trees though, I get why you can't, but it'd be a nice smaller change.

Yep, easiest is Time is Money (at 5 min, no time bought) as a wizard (20 ideally); if you have a second wizard friend it's EXTREMELY easy and not bad to automate if you are both watching TV in the background for example. Definitely duller solo. It helps if you like hearing kobolds complain about toe insurance.

They were going to change this so that tokens of the twelve didn't convert to heroic hearts anymore, but I'm seriously glad they left that alone. I can TR a bit on my alts until they iron out any issues with epic TR (they have to, I can't imagine ever epic TRing all the destinies).

There are 6 points left so I'm still playing with it, obviously. Its tight on feats, but I think I can play with the enhancements a bit. It's pretty hilarious. Maybe I should take it dex based and take the trip dc enhancement to make sweeping strikes more effective? Of the builds I've made this one makes me laugh the most. I want to spin like a top through dungeons.

Dex acrobats are kinda cool but with the absurd attack speed especially with haste boost you're losing a decent chunk of DPS by not having the THF feats, don't think it'd be possible to always be cleaving.

Constant heals from Death Aura would let me use Supreme Cleave on its 3 second cool down. Cleave and Great Cleave are 6 seconds. Sweeping Strikes is 20 seconds, Eldritch Strike is 15 seconds, and Whirlwind Attack is 5 seconds. Always cleaving is possible, but maybe not practical. I think it's hilarious.

Wow, I think Yakse and I failed that "Thrill of the hunt" quest so badly that we took down the ddo game servers and the ddo forum servers. Are they up for anyone else?

Nope. I just hope there isn't even a slight hint of a roll back because I had just finished an annoying quest a few minutes before they went down.

Yeah according to Twitter they're investigating but no useful information. Not being able to connect to game and forums is a kinda bad sign though as that's usually a routing/backbone issue or a data server issue rather than localized to just be certain rack.

This is the third time in the past 12 months that there data center has had pretty serious issues, although I guess when you are using the most bargain basement hosting you can get that will happen.

I think I'm going to run with this idea for my next life. It's a Half-Orc 1 Barbarian / 16 Rogue / 3 Cleric. I posted something similar to this a page or so back, but this is slimmed down on the levels and more focused overall. I only take one level of Barbarian for the Power Attack and Raging Crush enhancements. The idea is to rage on bosses and take a bite out of them with Raging Crush. Three levels of Cleric to pick up DR, PRR, Wand Mastery, and Divine Healing/Might. Finally, 16 levels of Rogue for class feats, skills, and the stacking QS/THF love. I want something that smashes face and cleans up afterwards while still being able to deal with damage spikes. I think that this will do what I want with a high BAB, stacked QS/THF, Power Attack enhancements, Divine Healing and enhanced scrolling.

It's not the most advanced build, but I think it will make a fine second life. I want to take it epic so I figure I'd go Legendary Dreadnought. Are there any adjustments I should make to this to account for that choice? Or any other obvious flaws, weaknesses, or considerations?

Once or twice in the past the servers went down right around the time of a big Lotro expansion or update launch and this time around too. Related? maybe.

Quick comment since I'm out and can't really mess with builds, I'd find something else for points besides Divine Healing. Even if you had super good amp it's quickly going to slide into the effectively useless territory.

This takes the same basic idea, but it goes heavy Cleric instead of Rogue. I lose the many benefits of Rogue, some power attack, some QS stuff, but gain reliable, scaling heals.

edit: Rogue 6 for LD.
