Yea, I mean, I can see it being a problem. But, at least with my users, they don't have any rules, they manually move emails to specific folders. Hell, a couple of my users have unread messages in the low five digits. In their inbox. Unread. Why yes, I can explain why. They're executives.

A challenge came in: We have a journalist team going to some remote place to do some journalist stuff. They're going to shoot a lot of footage, and want to bring a scanner and laptop so they can scan old pictures and use in the finished production. Now it's my task to find a decent way to store a Canon Canoscan Lide 700, a Lenovo Thinkpad Edge E130, and all cables for both units. I've been thinking of making a Pelican Case, but both journalists said they would ditch the case in a heartbeat and stuff the equipment into their suitcases instead because Pelican Cases take up far too much space. that's why I turn to you guys. Would any of you have any suggestions for packing the scanner, laptop, and cables in a nice and snug package? Ideally I'd like some neoprene bag with a fitted space for the scanner, the laptop, and a pouch for the chargers and cables, but lacking that I'll gladly settle for something sort-of-fitting, has soft corners, and offers protection on the same grade as a neoprene slip-case. Any ideas?

Maybe just keep it simple and buy some neoprene and make some simple folded cases? I'd keep each item separate so you can almost certainly find something to suit the laptop. I've stuff a lot of kit in my hard plastic suitcase amongst clothes over the years and you definitely don't want to be working around a monolith instead of a few items you can move around to fit right with everything else.

I have never had a problem with the nickname cache functionality in Exchange 2010/2013. It works perfectly fine. It's nice to be free from nk2 files.

I called the costumes department, and they said they'll see if they can find an intern that'll take the job. The one I talked to mentioned that they once made a wetsuit for a dolphin, so sewing a neoprene bag shouldn't be a problem. I'm still open to ideas though.

Peli cases are my go-to when a flight case would be too large. The idea of someone throwing a scanner into a suitcase scares me slightly, I have no idea how to stop something like that getting smashed when someone's determined not to have it in a case.

It's a $50 scanner, so it's not like it's horribly expensive. It's just a fact that they'll ditch a pelican case before they're out of the station in the first place, and I'd rather have some protection on the equipment than none at all.

The cost is sort of irrelevant when there's no shops around to buy a new one from. Ideally your case wants to stop the scanner from being able to twist, neoprene isn't going to help much here. This is one of those situations where you just want to hit people until they learn that cases are a necessary evil, but journalists are a special breed so that won't work.

Would a passthrough scanner be suitable for whatever they are scanning? Like a scansnap s1100 or something. They don't take up much space and you don't have to worry about as many moving parts as a flatbed. They are a little cumbersome to use though if they have to do high volume scanning. Another option would be to ship the thing there and just leave it there when done maybe? Have it waiting for them at the hotel might be nice. Not sure if money is an issue.

So an email came in "Hi Blackswordca, can you check the backups, a bunch of them failed over the weekend. Thanks! - Account Lead" I don't deal with backups, it was the last thing that the Sr tech on the account actually did with this client.. Ill be honest, I've never dealt with backups much so I don't know what I'm looking for but things are quiet so i thought id take a look at the logs, see whats going on. I log into vmware and its full of errors connecting to vsphere. I check the event log and there are a ton of group policy errors where the backup server couldn't connect to the DC over the weekend. I go back a few days and there are a ton of NTFS disc errors on the NAS we use to store the VMs... Today is starting out well.

Backups can be complex to troubleshoot. Events are a great place to start, and the NTFS disk errors you found are an even better place. I've lost track of the number of times I've had to tell a client that no, his backups to a disk won't work until the disk itself is fixed or replaced. Kinda hard to write to a failing disk, you know. Good luck with your new responsibility.

A reply to a ticket came in... I asked a domain registrar and shared hosting provider why their domain control panel would suggest that changing the nameservers would stop their hosting working. I was 99% sure this was a warning that meant "if you change your nameservers you'll need to name sure the zone is set up properly on the new servers" but I sent them a ticket just in case changing the nameservers on a domain dropped it out of their shared hosting platform for some bizarre reason. The reply was: quote:This is because to work your site or to show the contents of your site which are stored in your hosting account under public_html directory, the domain should point to our IP address. That is when your site using our name servers then it is working from our server and showing the ste related file which are save on hosting account. So it didn't answer the question and wasn't really written using sentences. I changed the nameservers anyway and I'm sort of glad I did if that's the knowledge of DNS that they display.

Our pharmacy director sat on a notification to upgrade java for the software that they use to order narcotics until today, the day of the changeover. Now that it's not working, he placed a ticket ("tell Bob we're cutting him off, he needs to go to rehab for that addiction ") and got our helpdesk to escalate it since they can't order anything until it works. Guess what upgrade didn't work? Guess who's support line is currently experiencing a high volume of calls and doesn't know when they'll speak to a live person? Guess who's carefully bringing out the worlds smallest violin?

Maybe you already know this but with the CLASSPATH environment variable you can install multiple Java runtimes on one computer and run each application on exactly the edition it requires without compromising system security (too much).

And you can do it with PYTHONPATH. And LD_LIBRARY_PATH. And PATH on Windows does the same thing as LD_LIBRARY_PATH. It's still bad practice in 2013.

I finally found my favorite thread on SA. I've been doing tier 1-3 helpdesk/desktop work for about 8 years now. Seems like everywhere you go there's issues. Spent the last week lurking the whole thread. For content: I work for a leisure travel company that owns a few popular brands and we power all the technology for that company. In total probably supporting around 1200 users. There's no first level helpdesk, just 3 people that answer the phones and put them in case form and send them to my team. These folks have no IT experience. I'm lucky if i can get them to have the user reboot before it gets to me. My team is 3 people and we're basically tier 1-3. And beyond us, it's engineers and architects. So not much of an escalation process. A lot of 'FIGURE IT OUT STUPID WHY DO I PAY YOU?' Now onto the latest awesome time i had here. We had a contract with dell for all our desktops and laptops. They wanted to us to pay 'more than is necessary' for new desktops/laptops. So what did So i mean, that sucks and why are we buying 200 laptops from best buy. The kicker. We haven't rolled out windows 8 yet, and the director of IT didn't know that and the computer only supports windows 8. But he already put the order in so we better get it working... Took 2 months, and a lot of them still aren't working and have display driver issues (because we bought them all cheap targus docking stations that break the video drivers on the laptops from time to time). So we roll out 80 of these. To all our sales idiots. And then a couple months later. ASUS stops making the laptop. So with all of the issues we had rushing out this batch of laptops, now we also have no support for them. Hoping that the business had learned from there mistake, i pointed them to a Lenovo rep I'd worked with in the past, hoping that he could get us on track. But i should have known that common sense would never prevail. We are now rolling out Lenovo Yoga 2's with windows 8.1 on them. I really wish i knew if anyone even knows that they have touchscreen, or give a poo poo. Sorry that turned into a pretty long rant. Just really don't have anyone else who might feel my pain.
