Why are media markets divided up like this? Why does Oregon look like the Holy Roman Empire while the areas surrounding New York, Los Angeles, Chicago, etc are so big?

Media markets are kinda the opposite of electoral districts: larger audiences are concentrated together by regional and local similarity rather than fractured. But all the viewers in the New York Metro have a lot in common in terms of the programs and ads they want access to, while the people in Klamanth might not have much in common with people just a thirty miles away because of the isolated nature of the communities.

Ability to broadcast across physical barriers plays a small part in it, of course, as suggested above.

So you'll notice the Boston media market, for example, envelops chunks of Rhode Island and New Hampshire. It simply makes economic sense for media networks in those areas to consolidate demographically and geographically into one market for rates and ratings because of density and common features of their audiences. This has a crazy effect on fundrasing for Congressional races, btw, as you can imagine, since districts can have the unlucky accident of falling largely into a very expensive media market.

edit: have a terrible horrible map since its the top of the page

A result of this is that politicians end up wanting to run in New York/SW CT/North Jersey end up having to run ads in all three. This means that we end up with ads for Chris Christie in Connecticut, even though no one here can actually vote for him.

I am pretty sure these river basins on this map go through two or more countries (international). Those big Chinese rivers only go through China. Notice how central-southern India is also empty on that map.

What this map is showing is DMAs, Designated Marketing Areas. These are artificial television advertising geographic boundaries (211 total in the US, not all of the US is covered). The traditional extent of the boundary was signal distance over the air but with cable and such that is a moot point. Now its more of a marker of what areas have integrated TV rates and carry the same broadcast networks. The larger a population center you have in a market the further boundaries for your DMA extend as its easier for small market stations to tap into the big one and remain relevant. Ergo the borders for say Los Angeles are absolutely gigantic because it has so little population competition while the borders for say Green Bay are tiny because it abuts Chicago and Milwaukee DMAs.

If you're ever curious as to what US city is most likely to get a new televised sports team go down the list of the top DMAs and you'll see that typically follows quite nicely. The NFL is a bit of an oddity, actually, because it features New Orleans (51), Buffalo (52), and Green Bay (true communists to the NFLs socialists, 70)

England according to the West Country:

Pretty much accurate. And I can't really blame people for retiring to Dorset since I can't imagine a nicer place to live out your golden years than the countryside.

The Torygraph actually made a list of the ten best places in England to retire to, and three of them were in Dorset. Number 1 was Christchurch, and number 9 was my hometown of Dorchester.

Can't speak about Iowa but I'm surprised for Las Vegas. You'd think they'd want any game anywhere to be able to be shown there.

And I thought ads for Virginia elections in Maryland were bad but gently caress, two states away? That's crazy. When I lived in California, the local tv stations were from Yuma, Arizona and they controlled the times for everything. March to November you get everything an hour early because of daylight savings time.

Warlord, Inc: Extortion and Corruption Along the U.S. Supply Line in Afghanistan. This came out in 2010 but it's a pretty loving crazy read to see how the DoD is supplying the war effort in Afghanistan. If it isn't flown in, I'm incredibly surprised it even makes it anywhere in Afghanistan. Especially through the southern route from Karachi to Quetta into Afghanistan. The DoD is paying, through contractors, incredible sums to get supplies to bases, paying off many of the same factions troops are fighting, and everyone is getting a bribe.

One interesting character is Abdul Wali Khan or Koka. He's been imprisoned by the US, involved in the opium trade, involved in murders but is paid off by a contractor to provide security for supplies.

I imagine the people who make their money on gambling, selling ludicrously expensive show tickets, and mugging drunk tourists probably don't want them sitting inside watching an (essentially) free game.

You sell drinks and food to people watching. Many people also like to watch what they are gambling on. But to be fair, I haven't heard of people betting much on games other than the playoffs and World Series.

One of the reasons people love casinos is "free booze!"*

I don't know if it applies when you're sitting in the "sports betting" area to watch games, but it does if you're on the floor even if you're just playing nickel slots. Just give the waitress a $1-$5 chip, depending on how fancy the place is.

And from the one time I went there and did bet on a game, it looked like they were showing all the games...I'm guessing buying the MLB package ignore blackout rules?

*I may have lost over $200 that weekend after all was said and done, but I drank at least $250-$300 worth of booze. I was ordering Grey Goose martinis almost the whole time.

From what I understand, "blackout" doesn't mean that they don't show the game, only that local broadcasters televise the game rather than national broadcasters. You might notice that the blackout generally applies to "local" teams.
