Yeah I didn't think the mod would effect anything, I just have never seen this in many hours of XCOM. I would assume it's just a bug in the game itself that has a super low repro rate. Has anyone else seen a UFO before the first abduction mission? Maybe I'm just the crazy one here.

If you dismiss a trooper do you get their medals back or do you have to have them... suffer an unfortunate battlefield incident?

I think that would free the medals, but I'm not certain. You, ummm, you do know that Army of Four only requires you to never by Squad Size I and Squad Size II, right? You can have as many guys as you want sitting in the Barracks. So if one of your Fantastic Four goes down you can slot in that Sniper as a replacement without compromising the Achievement. Given that you spent all that XP leveling the guy to Major I think taking him out behind the barn is a bit of an over-reaction, even if you end up never using him again.

It sounds more like a matter of probability than a bug. It's just very very unlikely that a UFO will spawn and be within your initial satellite coverage before the first abduction mission.

BUT THEN SLINGSHOT HAPPENS.

The Kinetic Strike module not only damages Sectopods, it even has a special animation when you kill them with it.

It doesn't work diagonally though.

It should recieve half damage like from any other source, making it 6/9 damage depending on if its upgraded or not. The sectopod actually has a really badass killsync animation if you kill it with a punch that is totally worth the damage from it exploding, especially with an assault based mech.

My current MEC was a former Heavy and since stats carry over (and the MEC class itself has the same crappy aim growth as the Heavy with a slightly different curve) it has pretty shoddy aim. Luckily she mostly runs around flamethrowering/grenading/EMPing things (never not aoe).

I'm considering sending one of my too many Col. Snipers to the chopping block to get a more shooty MEC so I actually get some use out of that particle gun outside of Collateral Damage. Seriously, my class distribution this game has been extremely sniper heavy.

Have they changed Overwatch? I notice a hell of a lot more misses on my Overwatch shots than there used to be. Even my sniper with 128 base aim consistently misses on Overwatch. Regardless, I just completed Base Defence on Classic, with 1 day left on Plasma Rifles - I had skeleton suits and lasers and got 4x Cyberdisc to start with, and then a shitload of Mectoids. I also learned today that hugging a berserker with your assault with said loadout is awesome because you get a free shot, another free shot when the berserker moves, and then two more free shots with rapid fire and a dead berserker.

Continued with my discouraging game (only in the second month, after losing my A-Team and the Mek). I started with a decent terror mission, eliminating all of the floaters with one troop casualty, to only have the Chrysalis mop up my remaining troops, ending with Russia leaving the project. Afterwards the Portent mission appeared and I declined it, as I only had 3 troops left.

So I focused on the OTS and opened up my 5th solider slot. Then the council came back with a mission about some guy named Zhang? With my last 5 troops I managed to rescue Zhang, and as a bonus I was able to poison the Muton with left-over Thin Men smoke.

Perhaps this is a sign the game is turning around? I'll find out in a few game-days...

Just finished the EXALT base. It feels like the pre-release info on them played them up as way more important than they were, or that there are cutscenes about them missing. They're ultimately not relevant at all. I'm glad that Annette and her friends are guaranteed to be psychics though, so far my A-team has been striking out. I think I'm going to permanently have a SHIV in rotation and not just as a backup. They're pretty beastly now!

So how do I not get ground under on Iron Man classic? The missions I can mostly handle, but I fall behind on the geoscape until I end up facing midgame enemies with early game soldiers. What sort of build/research order and base site should I start out with to keep up with enemy progression?

God drat. After losing Europe I send my covert op to hit Exalt. 1 day before the extraction I get hit with a "moderate" abduction. I have my A-team available.

Needless to say my A-Team hosed up. One was critically wounded and is out for a week. Two were heavily wounded and the only unscathed one (my sniper) can't carry a mission by herself. I now have to soehow put a team together out of a roster of heavies to rescue my (awesome) Support covert up from a swarm of Exalt. Can you go in, pick up your Operative and abort/leave if things get bad?

After finishing my normal classic game, I started up another one with Training Roulette. And for my Corporal levelup for my heavy I'm torn between Will To Survive and Grenadier. It's like better armor or more grenades. Decisions, man.

At least with my assault it's easier. Will to Survive or Battle Scanner.

Grenadier also bumps up the damage of grenades so they can kill thin men.

Yeah, I went with Grenadier for the heavy. Demolitions and all that.

But I've got another decision point.

My new corporal Support also has Grenadier... or Close Combat Specialist. Free overwatch within four tiles is always good, but I dunno if it's better than Grenadier.

Do Supports still get Deep Pockets automatically, and would that stack?

Research wise, I suggest Weapon fragments > Meld > Beam weapons. The early meld research allows you to go for MECs early if you want to. Weapon fragments are crucial because they are the precursor to lasers. You could even do Meld first if you want but I love scopes. You aren't going to have the first ufo (necessary for beam weapons) immediately after your first research finishes. Once you get lasers, honestly it's up to you afterwards. I'll typically go alien biology so if I want I can capture them and sprinkle in the occasional autopsy/interrogation.

Build wise, standard sat spam still applies. It's not necessary but if you are trying for a flawless (0 countries leave), you have to do it. A good rule of thumb is to try and get an uplink and 2-3 sats up a month. No matter what though, Launch sats at the END of the month so you can plan out who needs it, followed by what continent bonuses/money you can get.

Important early game buildings not involving sat rush. OTS is crucial as soon as practical mainly for increased squad size and to capitalize on the +will gains. Gene or Cyber lab depending on how/if you want to spend your meld. You can get by without labs. Workshops too if you get engies as abduction rewards, otherwise you'll need them for uplinks.

Continent bonus in order:
1)ASIA - The OTS and foundry projects vary between being critical to success and expensive. So half price on these is a no brainer. Plus, Asia is tied for the hardest bonus to get without starting there.
2)Africa - +30% spacebux pretty self explanatory
3) SA or NA - This one can be argued either way. In the short term, SA is better. Instant interrogations and autopsies are very nice but become unnecessary mid-late game. Plus SA is easy to get being only 2 countries. NA is better in the Mid to Long game and certainly won't hurt to have in the early game.

4000002312324354887)Europe - Fairly useless. Labs are unnecessary in classic, as are workshops (In month 6, haven't lost a country or built a workshop/lab). A workshop might be needed if you had to grab a different abduction reward than engies and still need them NOW. Usually not needed. Labs are certainly more valuable since EW increased research times, but far from being necessary or even a good choice over other things. On top of all that, Europe is the other hardest bonus to get at 4 countries. Plus gently caress the french.

As far as base layout, the only thing that really matters to me is essentially making sure the the left top 2 levels are reserved for uplinks. Uplinks are the one building it is almost mandatory you string together. An uplink alone is only 2 sats, link an uplink and you get a +50% increase in effectiveness.

You will need to modify the following setting in the DefaultGameCore.ini file:
SKYRANGER_CAPACITY = 4
and change it to 6

But, to change that value you'll need to do one of two things:
1) Get the ResourceHacker utility and change the value in the embedded INI file in the game's executable (XComEW.exe); or
2) Use the ModHelper utility to patch the XComEW.exe to allow it to read the INI file from the game's \config folder.

Problem is your Operative's gonna start on clear the other side of the map. If it's the you hack them mission, you'll go past the objectives as you run and will have to face many if not most of their guys anyway, so you might as well fight.

Likewise if its the they hack you mission you can have the Operative stay out of the way while the rest of your team fights it out. I recommend letting them have the Encoder and set up an ambush at the Transmitter instead.

I'm not sure if it's region specific but ozgameshop has recently restocked their code only digital versions of EU and EW (ran out of stock three times in the past two weeks). It's based in the UK and caters to Australians and NZ who are slapped with ridiculous retail prices. I know GMG and the humble store are particular about this sort of thing however.

So I just did the Newfoundland mission, which was randomly titled "Bloody Jester." With Tier 1 equipment and no mechs or gene mods on Classic. :gonk:

My sniper was the only person in the 5 man squad that made it out alive, and just barely-Crysalids were neck and neck with him and gaining each turn. To be honest, I'm relieved that at least he made it out because he's my only sniper in the entire barracks, but that still was the worst I've ever done on casualties in a mission. Between his failed overwatch shot that resulted in the death of a squaddie and his panic at a later period when two others died, Adam Zajac's sure as hell going to have survivor's guilt over that entire debacle.

I finally have 5 satellites in orbit right now and I'm pretty sure that Mexico's going to fall this month. Hopefully I can salvage this.

Perfectly valid choice, although I always choose the 'difficult' instead of 'very difficult' mission.

Very difficults give you 12 sectoids and in general you just won't survive that - especially if you get unlucky on your map selection.

But yeah an early Sergeant is a godsend because you can get the OTS and 5 squad members.

I've started just skipping the first council mission. Too many sectoids, too many thin men, not worth the squad wipe.
