"A self-diagnosed nymphomaniac recounts her erotic experiences to the man who saved her after a beating." IMDB page Offical trailer (very NSFW) After seeing the trailer, I am extremely excited about this film (as I am whenever any LvT film is about to hit). Considered the third in the trilogy of Antichrist and Melancholia, there are a few rumors circulating around this film: -The sex is real (although this has been disputed, and von Trier has said that they're superimposing pornstar genetalia, which still implies real sex) -Shia Lebouf auditioned by sending Lars von Trier a sex tape of him and his girlfriend -The film is over 5 hours long, and will be cut down to 4.5 hours and released in two parts: quote:The Cannes Film Festival has confirmed that the film will not qualify for competition at next’s year’s fest but has suggested it could screen von Trier’s original 5 ½ hour director’s cut of Nymphomaniac. Von Trier allowed his original cut to be trimmed down to appease distributors, who may have balked at the project’s marathon length. Releases on Christmas Day in Denmark, see you at the premiere! 6998x4133 version the fucked around with this message at 19:16 on Nov 23, 2013 |

The only question is if it gets butchered in the editing: http://www.hollywoodreporter.com/news/lars-von-trier-gives-up-655155 The trailer certainly makes me want to check it out though.

I watched the trailer earlier and it looks weird as all gently caress. Even if it turns out to be terrible, the trailer still got me interested enough to see it. The only Von Trier films I've seen before are Melancholia, which I loved, and parts of Antichrist and Dancer In The Dark, which were both totally bizarre and not in a good way (from what I saw). Hopefully it'll be completely bonkers and a decent movie but that remains to be seen. So if it's 4.5 hours long and will be released in 2 parts, this one is just part 1? You should really see Dogville (and maybe Manderlay if you like it). Dogville is probably the most tolerable LvT film that I can think of (and that's saying a lot). It's a lot like Kill Bill, except where Kill Bill is 1% torture of the woman and 99% revenge, Dogville is the opposite.

Trailer seemed to meander a lot. Never seen a LVT movie before, is it a coin toss whether it will be good or bad?

Steve Yun posted:Never seen a LVT movie before, is it a coin toss whether it will be good or bad? He's a very polarizing figure. Most people tend to either love him or hate him. Antichrist, for example, holds a 49% rating on Rotten Tomatoes, received 3.5/4 stars from Ebert, was nominated for the Palmr d'Or at Cannes but ended up winning a special "Anti-award" created specifically to admonish the film. Personally I think it's one of the best films of 2009.

It's kind of brilliant, this movie is effectively critic-proof because any negative review can just be dismissed as something something puritans.

I really liked both Melancholia and Antichrist and I've been hyped for this one for a while. But loving five hours, really? edit: anywhere I can buy the Stellan Skarsgård poster? I have an empty wall in my living room.

Sometimes stop the whole commercialization aspect stuff and making money and just...do something something art, man. Gatts fucked around with this message at 18:52 on Nov 23, 2013 |

Seriously, did the 60's never happen? Lars has made sexually explicit movies in the past, Breaking The Waves and The Idiots especially, which had unsimulated sex in it. This looks like a continuation of the style he's been refining with Antichrist and Melancholia, and the cast is perfect, lots of Von Trier all-stars! The fact that he gave up final cut is complete bullshit, and so is that it's being split in two parts, is that how little faith they have in our attention spans? I would gladly watch all 5 hours of the X-rated version.

A theater can probably do only one showing of a 5 hour movie a day in prime hours, even being able to do two is a big difference for them. I'm sure that's a concern.

the posted:This and also distribution companies have learned that they can literally make double profits by splitting movies in two. I don't think that's really an apt comparison, those adaptions were split into two during pre-production and the decisions were also about franchise building. I am sure LRT movies make a lot more for distribution companies than the great bulk of indie movies but not to the point where splitting it into two is a goldmine. It's going to be shown at a lot of small places with like 3 screens that aren't going to want to show it on all three screens which they'd have to do if it were five hours long/etc.

I was a bit interested in this, but the trailer turned me off of it. It looks reductive and probably a slog. Not that I take all trailers at face value, but the pieces available here give me little confidence. The "I'm Joe and I'm a nymphomaniac" "we call it 'sex addict'" exchange is what does it for me, especially with the summary describing her as "self-prescribed." It seems like it's going to be another case of a character, for one reason or another, labeling herself as something they find despicable, despising themselves, and rolling along on the LvT perpetual motion misery machine. Also, it could've had none of that and looked great, but the Rammstein still would make it seem silly. Five hours is pretty absurd for one movie, even with an intermission. While I think three hours can be a fine length, five would be an entire night of free time if I dared to watch it on a work day.

I know I am in the minority, but I would gladly pay $25+ for a 5.5 hour movie(with intermission) as opposed to like $9 per movie if it were split in two.

Eeeehhh. Von Trier is a powerful filmmaker in a lot of ways but is also a total pretentious bastard. Come on, the "My only sin was asking too much of the sunset..." bit in the trailer, he's trying so hard to be meaningful. My objections with him aren't with the depictions of sex and violence themselves, but he seems to play it for base shock value a lot of the time. The sex theme is appropriate since I'm betting the movie's going to essentially be a five-hour cinematic circlejerk.
