I wonder what he thinks of his characters - obviously they're meant to undermine and ridicule the real politicians, and throw a spotlight on their terrible attitudes and actions, but they have a life of their own too, and for me they genuinely do come off more likeable. So in a way he's also helping IDS's image - it's probably the extra charisma in this case. Or is it just me?

That's why Ed Balls brought it up in the Commons this week pretty much calling him out.

There are serious problems around how he was in charge of the bank and what happened under his watch - the Co-Op recently had to be 'rescued' by private investors, it ain't a mutual no more. It's become a story partly because of the guy getting filmed buying drugs, and the whole wild hedonism with gayness angle the tabloids love to run with, so it would be getting spun by the government anyway. Put in his Labour connections and they're having a field day painting all kinds of lurid pictures, even though the only really relevant stuff (why was this guy allowed to be put in charge of a major bank) is poo poo the Tories support to an even greater degree, deregulation and all that. Honestly I think there's another angle to this too - the Co-Op was always touted as an ethical bank, pledging to never invest in certain areas and to generally be the least-poo poo bank, as well as having a more leftist company structure. When it sold up and became a normal bank with shareholders and pure profit motive, they went on a big drive to convince people that the ethical ethos was still there, but a lot of customers were having none of it. With this whole Flowers incident though, what we've been seeing is the company reframing the entire issue, talking about past moral and ethical failings (i.e. this guy's personal life) and how the company is now going to rebuild that ethical reputation. They're basically recasting the whole 'ethical bank' controversy as being about a completely different issue, and painting the new owners as the champions of the company's ethics instead of its betrayers. And the Tories love investors, privatising banks, the cleansing power of capitalism and the free market etc etc, so anything that can turn this narrative around is right up their street.
