Honestly SMG's interpretation of Bound 2 is very obvious and Kanye has essentially confirmed as much in interviews that it was exactly what he was trying to do. I know that SMG has a persona beyond this as well and is known for out-there interpretations but if actually understanding the video on a really base level garners this response;echronorian posted:SMG, simultaneously the best and worst poster of SA media forums that's really dumb. Anyway its a really cool video, I'd rather someone like Kanye make something weird and have it fail in a lot of people's eyes than try for average and generic and succeed. I feel a lot of people hating on it aren't really aware of much of what Kanye's done or his public persona but then a lot of people in this thread are fans and say they hate it so I don't know.

It's fine, I was on the side too and had a great time, but I think it's cooler if you're in GA because Yeezy's framed by the mountain the entire time. It's really not a big deal though

Thank Yeezus. Was pumped to see the show regardless but figured something about the mountain would be the answer. Guess I'll live without being able to see dat frame-age.

Personally, I feel like Ye copping to the fact that the video for Bound 2 is cheezy is the closest thing to damage control we're gonna get. The reason I don't buy that he set out to make that as lame as it ended up is because he has traditionally positioned himself as the artist who is transcendent in his delusional narrative. Him copping to the accusation feels more like, 'gently caress it it is what it is and there's no time to do anything else' than 'ha ha, I know I'm lame and pussy whipped, lets laugh at my love letter to my baby mamma'.

The song itself, independent of the video, is full of humor that straddles a line between self-deprecatory and self-aggrandizing. After the whole bleak album, he jokes about fixing his life in a way that sounds resigned to failure - while also half-bragging about all the mischief he'll get up to. The video fits it quite well. Like, watch it immediately after the video for Black Skinhead, and the New Slaves projections, to see the gulf between sincere Kanye and satirical Kanye. Bound 2 is not a love letter to Kim K. Nobody in the world would film a 'love letter' this way - I don't care who you are. It looks like a cosmetics commercial crossed with a porno, and Kim is essentially used as a prop. Kanye West is over-the-top, but he's not inhumanly stupid. Remember that half the album is critical of misogyny in the guise of empowerment. Kanye's loving a realdoll on a motorcycle ride through a screen saver, and the only thing missing is an eagle shedding a tear in the background. Yeah the video is pretty obviously the equivalent to a 20 something year old wearing a wolf shirt ironically. It's his comment on the outdated idea of the American dream. I don't know how anyone can watch the video and think he is sitting there thinking that it's meant to be this all too serious non ironic video. Again it's him taking a hold of white culture. Well just because people mosh at a Family Values tour, that doesn't mean those lineups aren't comprised of bands riding some of the worst trends in rock. Those horns are monotonous as gently caress and completely flat-sounding. They're the most prominent element of a six-minute song and they sound like a moron's definition of avant-garde, taking something lovely and selling it as genius. You're really gonna sit here and tell me that anything made by Beats by the Pound is worth salvaging? Sorry i still cant believe this was a real post The beat loving owns.

Now Ye's being accused of being an anti-semite by the Anti-Defamation League. Ye's comment: Yeezy posted:Man, let me tell you something about George Bush and oil money and Obama and no money. People want to say Obama can't make these moves or he's not executing. That's because he ain't got those connections... Black people don't have the same level of connections as Jewish people. Black people don't have the same connections as oil people. Foxman posted:This is classic anti-Semitism. There it goes again, the age-old canard that Jews are all-powerful and control the levers of power in government. As a celebrity with a wide following, Kanye West should know better. We hope that he will take responsibility for his words, understand why they are so offensive, and apologize to those he has offended. "Kanye West should know better"

I know ive been very lukewarm and skeptical about Yeezus but it still just doesnt feel like AOTY-caliber to me and i already felt like i was missing something big that would make me fall in the love with the album before at least 2 publications whose opinions i generally agree with endorsed it. Dammit... Going to listen some more.

I said it before but I think a major reason Yeezus is going to take the top spot for a lot of people is that it's short and easy to re-listen to. It was a departure in a few different ways but it's not a slog. Like...I'm sure Reflektor would make more sense after a few more listens too but I don't want to spend the rest of the year trying to figure out why Win Butler wants me to get depressed to carnivale music about how lovely missionaries are.

Has anybody listened to WTT in the past year? That album felt more like a summer blockbuster than a 'serious' addition to either artists body of work, all flash and spectacle but zero depth. I bumped it a fair bit when it came out but am struggling to remember more than three or four tracks from it now.
