I'm thinking about doing this with a new 5S. The line I'd be upgrading with is an old flip phone with no data on it. Will getting that removed complicate the process at all?

I use pretty minimal data, I just buy one or two 50 MB blocks a month. Why is it when I utilize data out of town the same processes use so much more? For example I was just in SF, and after just accessing a few webpages it told me I had used something like 15 MB of data, which is insane. I have roaming turned off, so I'm not sure what's going on.

Are you near a lot of wifi networks when you're in town that it auto joins?

Well it was SF so probably, but I think I turned off my wi-fi in the hotel because their's was very expensive.

It looks like I was using a lot of background data on several apps (Play Store, NYTimes, FB). I'll disable that, for some reason it was utilized much more when I was out of town.

I've tried with 4 android phones and an iphone. I've tested with the same model android phone on both Verizon and on AT&T wireless. The problem has occurred with every phone I've tried on AT&T and on no phones on any other carrier.

I see that AT&T offers Wireless Home Service (i.e. connect your home phones to a cellular device) but the website says it's $20.00/month.

I thought it could be added to an existing plan for $10/month or something like that?

If you add it to a minutes family plan it is $10 a month, just keep in mind it uses your minutes then. $20 is for unlimited calling.

Thanks for the information.

Does anybody have any experience with the Home Wireless setup?

My wife and I are on a family plan and have thousands of rollover minutes and for $10/month it seems like a pretty good deal for keeping a "landline"...

I wish it provided caller id name but that's not a big deal I guess.

EDIT: The reviews on Amazon don't sound too good......

My interview with the hiring manager went pretty well I guess, it lasted for over an hour. He said I would hear back this week, which I didn't. I am not too concerned however, the recruiter that called me is on vacation until Monday and its thanksgiving week. Should I be concerned if I am not called for a second interview by the end of next week?

I don't think it happens automatically. You can just call into care 1-800-331-0500 and ask them for your unlock code. They will probably validate that your account is 1) closed 1a) in good standing and then provide you with the proper unlock pin.

It's not as good quality wise as a wired landline, but overall the kinks are worked out. I use it personally and don't have an issue.

Yeah it'll be weird this time of year. It sounds like you just did the 2nd interview, so basically your name is then sent to a store manager or two, depending on who is looking for help. With it being the holidays and only getting busier, who knows when they will have time to call you. I would follow up first week of December.

Yea I didn't really count the phone screen as the first interview, it literally lasted like 3 minutes. I'll call like Wednesday of next week if I don't hear anything. Thanks.

I'm currently under contract with AT&T for the next 9 months, but I'm trying out Republic Wireless since it's ridiculously cheap. If I end up keeping it and want to port my number over, do I pay my ETF first or will it cancel my account automatically by porting it over?

Picked up my unlocked Dev X today. Had a previously activated (then de-activated) nano-SIM. Chatted with AT&T and asked they switch my service to that nano SIM and they won't do it. Told me I need a brand new one "to protect my account."

What? What's the big deal about flipping back on a previously used and perfectly functional nano SIM? Especially since I validated every account auth question for them. Guess I'm trekking across town tomorrow to find an open store, since I killed my mini SIM. Must have trimmed it too much.

Once a sim is disconnected, it cannot be reactivated. It's a technology limitation. They say account security to have a reason for it.

Just as an FYI (correct me if I'm wrong AT&T guys) you can't fax or use the line for any data services like that line that goes into a Dish DVR or whatever. So keep that in mind if you ever need anything like that. I was considering it but I'm not sure I want to give up the occasional fax convenience.

Hey all. I read the first page and last few pages of the thread but I still have some basic questions.

Can I join my parent's family plan without signing a contract if I bring my own phone or pay full price? I would be porting my number from Sprint. I would like to get a Nokia Lumia 1020. I just don't want to sign a contract and find out halfway in I hate the service or their network starts sucking, etc (Sprint I'm looking at you).

Thanks guys.

Getting hired at AT&T is actually really hard overall. Most people apply multiple times. It's the same with Verizon honestly.

Depends on your employment situation. In wireless, Verizon and ATT Corp are by far the best two to work for, especially compensation wise, hence there are more people applying to get in. If you need a job faster or need more sales experience, getting a job at an indirect (non corporate) location is much easier, they just don't pay as well or have benefits. A lot of people work a year or so in indirect, and then it's a lot easier to get a corporate position.

Depends on what your standard of pay is, basically an indirect will pay $25-35K a year, corporate pays $45-60K.

Yes to all these things. Just go to a corporate store to do it. Make it clear that you want to buy the phone at retail, the full 500 or 600 dollars and make sure its on zero commitment.

I would mention this isn't a bad option to do Next if you want to stay off contract. You do get a small discount off the phone (not as good as 2 year of course), you have the option to trade in in a year and can pay it off at anytime instead of up front.

I'll have to investigate that. The Lumina 1020 is still pretty expensive off-contract. It runs about $400-500 used it looks like, and full AT&T retail is $800!
Makes the fact it's $99 with a contract seem very tempting.

Edit: although at that discount I may as well sign the contract as it's much greater than the ETF...hmm

Service should be good for me in the immediate future as I've tested it with friends and family. I guess I'm paranoid that it might start to get worse or something. For the last 6 months my Sprint service has dramatically gotten bad (missed calls & texts). Also next year I may move somewhere else.

To its credit ATT is putting a good chunk of change towards its network nationwide. It certainly will depend on where you are, but they I are basically shooting to competing with Verizon. Personally, my area is traditionally good coverage wise but I have noticed great overall coverage with ATT.

On a work front level, out of 7 employees at my store, one is out on medical leave, one got promoted Dec 1st and one is getting promoted and leaves Dec 15th. I'm probably going to die of exhaustion by the end of the month.

It seems to be pretty good here in the Seattle area overall. Originally it was Cingular which I don't know if is a plus or minus.

For Sprint... you know about the Softbank deal & Network Vision, but they say they've been upgrading towers in the area for months and service has just gotten worse. It's too bad. I feel some loyalty to them, and also having a SERO plan is a great deal, but, it loses it's value if it doesn't actually work. Oh well.

I guess when the contractors hired to replace the roof heating/cooling unit went up to go really take a look at it they discovered a massive pool of water and the roof sagging over the middle part of the store. They can't hoist the roof unit up there with the risk of it collapsing so we need a new roof.
