Hello friends and comrades, I have decided that it would be really fabulously fantastic if the Debate & Discussion forum had a music thread where people can post their favorite political and D&D-esque music! I really love the D&D pictures thread and I am hopeful that this could be a similarly fun and entertaining thread with a relatively relaxed and casual posting atmosphere. Moderators and Administrators, I hope you will be okay with this thread! I think there is a lot of really fantastic political music out there and I am interested in learning about other posters' favorite political songs! So I strongly encourage everyone who posts in this thread to put some D&D-related music in their post! I decided to kick this thread off by making a video of myself singing the English language version of the USSR anthem and uploading it to youtube! This version of the Soviet anthem was originally sung by Paul Robeson, and I hope you enjoy my amateurish a cappella rendition of this tubular tune! Here it is: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ji3QcgybUYY I'm looking forward to hearing other posters' favorite political music and I may post more music too if this thread catches on! Edit: I guess I'll post the lyrics to the English version of the USSR anthem, just like some other posters have been posting the lyrics to the amazingly awesome songs they're posting! In my a cappella rendition of the song, I replaced the word "men" with the gender-neutral term "folks." So I'll do that in the lyrics I post too. Here are the lyrics: United forever in friendship and labor, Our mighty Republics will ever endure. The great Soviet Union will live through the ages. The dream of a people their fortress secure. CHORUS Long live our Soviet motherland, built by the people's mighty hand. Long live our people, united and free. Strong in our friendship tried by fire. Long may our crimson flag inspire, Shining in glory for all folks to see. Through days dark and stormy where great Lenin lead us Our eyes saw the bright Sun of freedom above and Stalin our leader with faith in the people, Inspired us to build up the land that we love. CHORUS We fought for the future, destroyed the invader, and brought to our homeland the laurels of fame. Our glory will live in the memory of nations and all generations will honor her name. CHORUS Thanks, Wikipedia! And thanks to all of you maximally mondo posters who have posted some spectacularly splendid music in this thread! Fortunate Son owns because it sounds like (and has often been mistaken for) a big dumb GO AMERICA song at first, but if you listen to the lyrics it's harshly critical of blind support for military action by people who wont suffer the consequences, what we would now call the 1%, and jingoism https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ec0XKhAHR5I

I imagined these lovers in a conversation... if you listen to the words of The Electrician it really explains itself after I've started.

I think this is a political song because it's about social upheaval. Also it's awesome. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5Q-NaC7P3a0 Another version, from probably 30 years or so later https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6AXNRi4dtJYp everybody knows the words and that makes me cry like a tiny baby every time I watch this (especially when they get to Dove sarà). (The shot of the Atomium is a little weird.) And here's the incomparable Francoise Hardy: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mw7_ahrZa1w (The intro segment of this one is pretty ) Anyway when she starts singing in French I melt. I have some curiosity about how Euro persons perceive this song. Is it like just the cheesiest thing ever? Like old stupid Elvis songs?

With a singing voice like yours I think you might have a shot at pulling off the musical equivalent of "Scared Straight!", only directed at would-be neonazis instead of teenage delinquents. I'm just poking fun of course.
