I like the way the album sounds. It might not be innovative or groundbreaking, but it sounds so much better than most music out out today. Compression and loudness and all that I guess, but I am happy with it.

It's got a very luxurious "deluxe" sound that hasn't been in vogue for decades outside adult alternative like Disney and Phil Collins. What I can't fathom is how how much attention to detail was paid to the production compared to how unfinished so many of the songs seem.

Give Life Back to Music just repeats itself completely from the halfway point; it's like a song from a video game that's just designed to loop forever without actually having a sensible beginning-middle-end structure. In the last couple of seconds before Lose Yourself to Dance finishes, you can hear the verse begin again, which sounds incredibly cheap - it's not even a definitive fade-out (if that isn't an oxymoron). Get Lucky has that thrilling robot voice break, but doesn't really develop it satisfyingly, ending with a weak synth noodle over yet another fade-out.

I know these are supposed to be dance songs, which are of course built from looping and repetition. And yes I do love Homework like everyone else does. But these pop songs repeat themselves more than benefits them, and they do it in a way that doesn't actually follow the example set by (for example) Chic or the other classic disco stuff they're recreating. DP's older pop songs like Harder Better and Digital Love had really exciting structures that introduced ideas and took the listener on a journey.

At least Giorgio by Moroder takes you on a journey. Can't deny that one.

I like how Julian is apparently living his life in some alternate timeline where his 70's rock career happened in 2000 and now that it's the 10's he's trying to have an ill advised 80's robo-synth conversion complete with cheesy video.

What is the song that bookends the video?

The song is listed in the description. It is: Shirobon - Born Surviver

I seriously think the 2 clips of that Shirobon song are more energized, spirited, and engaging than anything on RAM (including Instant Crush). Even the lyrics throughout the album are soft, trite and contrived. I clearly do not understand the high praise it has received.

In other news, RAM made the list of the 23 best albums of 2013 as ranked by the A.V. Club at http://www.avclub.com/article/the-23-best-albums-of-2013-106233

I am totally on board with Instant Crush being the new single, because it's probably tied with Contact as my favorite song off the album. And out of those two Instant Crush definitely gets more 'legitimate' love, while I mostly like Contact as a concept (the 'concept' I am assuming is 'just KEEP GOING until it breaks! MORE POWER!').

I'm sorry the band didn't just churn out more of the same. It's not a flawless album, but they made no promises that it would be that, and told you very early on that it wasn't an electronica album. It seems like you want Daft Punk 4: Ghosts or something.

honestly, while I love RAM, part of me is disappointed that it wasn't electronica, because if I consider the music that comes up when you plug Daft Punk into Pandora their contemporaries, Daft Punk is the best at it, and producing a quality, different sound through it. Deadmau5's songs all last about six minutes too long, I can't distinguish between most of the Glitch Mob's music, Justice's stuff is far too constantly hard-edged, and any others don't seem to have more than one or two songs.

I suppose the latest incarnations would be the likes of Calvin Harris and Avicii, and I can appreciate their stuff to an extent, but I still wish somebody would decide 'hey, Discovery was great, let's make that again'.

I'm not saying your opinions are wrong. But they've gone in so many different directions that an album like RAM doesn't feel "wrong" to me.

We already HAVE discovery, homework, human after all, and the masterpiece alive 2007, releasing another electronic album might be safe for them and I'm not saying I wouldn't buy another electronic daft punk album, but the market is uber saturated with electronic influences and it's for that reason an album like RAM actually stands out much more.

Start with French House and you'll find plenty. But no, it probably won't "reach" you because it isn't in the main lexicon of dance music. Look to 1998 era Chicago house, early 2000's filter revival, and late 2000's resurgence to hear things that influenced early Daft Punk, and subsequently were influenced by Daft Punk.

Sorry, guy.
What year does Julian Casablancas think this is with moves like that?

I mean, I know I've been critical of the album, but that video is a level of cheese that goes beyond "Enjoyably cheesy". It's just kind of cringe-worthy watching this guy do bad white guy dance poses while he sings in a girl robot voice and tries to give sultry looks to the camera.

I've listened to the whole thing now (at least of Discovery).

They sound really, really good when they're able to perform tracks more as a band and less of a human computer, which makes sense. For example, Face to Face sounds surprisingly fantastic, and so does Too Long, because they really sound like a band, and it's a really satisfying, thick sound. If Discovery had sounded like this band in the first place, it would have been hailed as astonishingly, strikingly original, though probably not as good. It's also interesting how much it doesn't sound like Random Access Memories.

Inevitably some of the robot voices are a bit underwhelming. Harder Better sounds otherwise neatly tight and sparse, like Remain in Light-era Talking Heads, but the vocal sounds like a granddad gargling pickling vinegar. There's also a very conspicuously northern English accent in Something About Us. Ey up chuck there's something about us I've got to say.

Guy absolutely nails the Digital Love solo. (Shame the mix isn't right.)

Yeah I dug the story too. I thought it was a pretty good music video. Casablancas was being his usual weird self but that doesn't really surprise me so I guess that is why it didn't bother me.

I really like this. Yeah the vocals are a bit...let's say not as good as the original, but it's certainly good. I've listened to Discovery maybe at least a hundred times in the last year as my 3 year old has been obsessed with it since Interstella 5555, so it's kind of refreshing to get a different take on the music. It's also kind of neat how the live performance puts the music into a more accessible context if you are familiar with playing instruments...kind of like a translation or a more familiar accent. They do a good job with this. I was expecting not to like it.

The keyboard players throws in a little Funkadelic around 37:54 in Short Circuit.

I'm totally down with Record of the Year; Get Lucky is one of the best pop tracks in a long time.

On the other hand, album... oof. I like RAM. I really do. I think it's just fine in the pantheon of the rest of their albums, I don't think it's significantly worse and was certainly one of the most interesting albums this year. But not one of the best. I wonder if it's a pander to the "alt"/college crowd by the Grammys, because it's hard to imagine it really being ranked highly in any polls. I don't think we'll see it in many year-end best-ofs.

It's pretty quick, easy to miss if you're not watching. There's a shot of their helmets, covered in dust on a shelf, in the storeroom just before the fire. It's right after the guitar solo.
