I love the user replaceable battery and the micro SD slot of the S4. I don't so much like the direct sunlight viewing experience. I like the idea of the Moto X special touches like the mic and notification stuff. I like that the Nexus 5 is a real Nexus device and will get upgrades fastest.

The big downside of the Moto X is screen size, and the big downside of the Nexus 5 is the lack of any Otterbox like tough cases that I can see.

Thoughts?

The screen size is the big upside for the Moto X for me. Get a Maxx.

Crazy. Having larger than 5" I couldnt imagine going smaller than 5" at this point. In fact it was a deciding factor in me not getting an X.

I can get either of the Nexus 5 or the Moto X for free and gift my S4, or keep my S4 and get a Nexus 5 or Moto X to gift are the basic options. I am indeed AT&T not Verizon.

Are the features of the Moto X (mic, notification stuff, etc) really that awesome? For me the main thing I see as the sad part of losing the S4 is to give up the SD card slot.

Id personally go Nexus 5 in your boat. The moto X is a great device, no denying that. But given the option the bigger screen and what not weights that out for me.

You cant go wrong either way. And I can legit say gently caress a galaxy these days. At least til the 5 or whatever comes out.

You wont miss the SD card long term unless you watch 10 hours of anime on the train every day. Cloud - Wifi - Plenty of space to store music. Again if you need 90 hours/anime/porn of music stored on a device in flak then well sorry.

The notification stuff really is that good, if only because it means that your phone is ready to use immediately upon picking up or pulling out from your pocket. I was concerned that the lack of a LED would be annoying but I don't miss it at all after a couple of days. The camera gesture thing is very handy as well.

Do you have more than 32 gigs worth of data on your current phone? I think a lot of people that list am SD as a "must have" are over estimating how much storage they really use.

Well I'd be getting the 16 gig Moto X, and I definitely hit more than 16 gigs of stuff (right now my phone is down to < 1 gig and I have 12 gigs of stuff on the SD card as well), but a lot of that could be trimmed down (too many podcasts, roms, etc).

Frankly the lack of an LED is almost a feature. I've yet to turn it off on my phones but I often think about doing it.

What Roms are you playing on a cell phone that are that large? The entire nes library from every country is a whole 700 megs. Come on now. You can't cut your mame library down to 10-20 games you play instead of carrying around a ton? And podcasts? How many hours per day do you need?

I had this packrat problem once. I cured it by realizing I use 1/100th of what I carried. Be realistic.

Now if you said you use your phone as your main camera and took tons of photos I have no argument. Hell the woman has to delete 10+ gigs every month or two. Still you're creeping into mkv HD anime territory here. Stop pack ratting

Its true. The sd card is more of a safety blanket than anything. I definitely don't need all that space. 16 GB is going to be a little tight but definitely not hard.

As far as speaker volume goes, was it configured wrong, or are they amping the poo poo in software, beyond clipping, to fix a hardware issue?

8-9 hours screen time is about the most you're going to get when actually using it, especially with GPS. From 4:35 AM yesterday to ~6 PM my MAXX was off the charger, spent ~8 hours of that in Airplane mode with wifi on, 2 hours of screen time, and it was still at 78%. This is mostly just IMing and some browsing though, nothing heavy like GPS navigating or streaming video.

The 5's screen is 1080x1920 and the scrolling effect means you need 2160x1920 to have 1:1 pixel mapping. Anything lower will have to be scaled.

Idle power drain for me seems to be slightly less than 2% an hour on LTE. By idle, I mean just sitting there but still having all my normal syncs going (gmail, hangouts, facebook, exchange, etc.) It can fare a bit better on wifi, but it depends on the signal quality (wifi at work actually murders my battery.)

Holy Hell.
Through some good fortune, I have the opportunity to choose among a free Nexus 5, Moto X, or Nexus 7.

I have an iPad 2 and an iPhone 5. I don't currently own an Android device, so I am not sure which to choose.

I want a phone with a large screen, which leans me toward the N5. I also love that I could root it and get tethering (is this correct?). Also, can I just plop my iPhone AT&T SIM right in the N5 and be ready to go immediately?

At the same time, most of my friends use iPhones and the network effect from things like iMessage is strong. Maybe I should just upgrade my aging iPad 2.

What do you think?

Seconding the N5 screen is too big. I figured I needed a big phone because my hands are huge, but it is super clumsy when I needed to do poo poo one handed, like dial or access any of the functions. Most of the time I had to really stretch my fingers to do it. The Moto X screen and body size is perfect. It threw me off a bit when I opened the box and found it to be smaller than my Gnex but it's perfect.

I came from a 4" Xperia Arc and the N5 screen and phone is definitely NOT too big for me. I don't have the largest hands by any means and I find the N5 to be very comfortable in my hand. One handed scrolling and swype texting is relatively easy as well. But really phone and screen size are all relative to the individual anyways.
