Does anyone have a suggestion for a high quality folio case for the retina mini? The Kavaj was brought up before, but I'm curious about other options as well. Budget is up to about $100. I like the look of the pad and quill cases but I"m worried about the longevity of those wooden holders.

I picked up this case off Amazon as a cyber monday deal: http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00FAECKH2/ref=oh_details_o02_s00_i00?ie=UTF8&psc=1

It came yesterday, and so far, I'm fairly happy with how it looks. I like that the back has some texture for grip. We'll see how it holds up. In the past I've gone with Otterboxes, so this is a different sensation.

Do you really need rugged rugged? Otterbox is the main rugged one, and its nice, but it really, really adds to the size and weight. Even with the Air its kind of killing the purpose of the tablet.
I see what you're saying. But to be honest- if it protects my ~$700 new toy, I don't mind the added bulkiness. Thanks for suggesting this brand.

You could also get the $100 AppleCare+ and just get it fixed if you gently caress it up.

This is the way to go. Buying a phone or tablet that's main selling point is it's light and slim and then putting a giant bulky, heavy case over it is not the way to go. Just spend the $100 and walk around with no protection. If something happens it's then not a big deal.

Bought an iPad Air. Is there some sort of SA-browsing app? I seem to remember having heard about it, and I'd like to try something other than the default Safari experience.

It's called Awful. If you search for Something Awful in the app store it should come up. I'm not sure if the old, unsupported version has been pulled from the store yet, so make sure you get the one with the most recent update date.

Glad you mentioned this. I don't know anything about AppleCare (aside from the probably-unreliable online gossip). Is it worth the cash? Any hidden strings attached with AppleCare that are worth knowing about?

Me crush ass to dust

The catch is that if it's accidental damage you pay $50 for the repair. Apple let's you do this twice. Otherwise the Applecare just extends the regular warranty to two total years.

So if you were to drop your iPad and get it repaired you're really paying $150 for that first incident.

In Canada they raised the prices of Applecare from 49 to 79 so double check in the States too.

If you got the protection before they changed the rules you're still paying the old deductible.

When I checked recently, they raised the iPhone price but not the iPad one. I don't understand why, but *shrug*.

I'll definitely look into AppleCare. Thanks.

But just one thing- I already purchased the iPad Air, but without AppleCare. What's the best way for me to purchase the protection, but minimize the possibility that Apple will turn down a future claim, ie. "We're not replacing it because you we think you bought AppleCare after damaging it." Can it be purchased in-store after a qualified inspection of some sort?

You have to take it to the store for an inspection before they will sell it to you, so yeah.

Probably iPhones get replaced more often than iPads so the plan needs to cost more.

AppleCare+ must be purchased within 30 days of the date you bought your new iPad. If you did not purchase AppleCare+ with your iPad, you may purchase it at an Apple Retail Store or by calling the AppleCare Contact Center. To buy AppleCare+ at an Apple Retail Store, a Specialist will first need to verify your iPad purchase date and confirm that your iPad has no pre-existing damage. Find an Apple Retail Store. To buy AppleCare+ from the AppleCare Contact Center, you will be required to verify your purchase date and run a diagnostic to confirm that your iPad has no pre-existing damage.

Are there any cases for the iPad out that have a strong hinge allowing me to use the iPad like a laptop at any angle?

Something like this:

That case is the CruxCase which isn't coming out until January 29th, 2014.

ClamCase is also making one but also won't be released until January 2014...

Basically I just want something to prop up my iPad on my lap (or on a pillow) while I'm sitting on the couch so I don't have to look down at the device and get a stiff-neck. I also want something strong so I can touch the screen while it's propped up.

Any suggestions or do I have to wait for the above two cases to be released?

I'm not sure if it's exactly what you want but the Logitech Ultrathin keyboard will hold it in a position like that and give you a physical keyboard at the same time.

A very good deal for the older iPad Mini 64gb has cropped up online (£130 off making it £300) I know this is the older A5 chip model, but I am considering getting my wife this so she stops stealing my Air. All she really does is use it for keeping recipes on, a few organisational apps and apps that arent available on Android, and watching tv/films when we've been on holiday.

I know the older model is more than adequate for this, but i've heard there are issues with iOS 7 on the older A5 chip models of various iPads. Do any goons know of these or have experienced them? if they have is it related to a single app or just the experience in general? Is this worth it, or would I be better off getting a smaller capacity (read 16gb) Mini with Retina Display to future proof to some degree?

As an alternative, I considered the iPod Touch, but I think the size of the screen is counter intuitive to what she uses it for.

iOS 7 runs fine on the first iPad mini. I have no issues whatsoever.

That said, if you're getting an iPad mini now, the retina is a better choice. The screen is a vast improvement and the processor will ensure the retina mini remains more future proof than the original mini.

Welcome home boys!
If she is used to using your Air she might be a little disappointed in the performance difference. Then again, depending on what you do or how perceptive she is, it may not matter.

The Retina is a better investment for the long term though, if you run the old and new side by side it is really a pretty massive difference.

Are you after the space for the likely occasional movies on holiday scenario? If so I'd personally go with the retina mini too, as it's far more likely to last a couple of years before feeling slow and frustrating to use (see original iPad now)

What's the best app for using the iPad as a second display with a Windows laptop? I'm looking at Air Display 2 but wondering if there's anything better/cheaper.

sbyers77

Does anyone know how the iPad Air fits a Timbuk2 Plush Sleeve XS?

My bother has a Timbuk2 sleeve for the original iPad that is clearly way too big for it, it would slide around inside. Timbuk2's website says it will fit inside the Plush Sleeve XS, which is designed for the "new" iPad (4th gen), but it doesn't say if it will fit well without sliding.

Endless Mike
Aug 13, 2003

It's thinner and narrower. If the sleeve is snug on an iPad 2-4, it's not going to be snug on an iPad Air.

The only other one that I know of is Splashtop XDisplay. I'm wondering how well these second display apps work too since Ableton Live now supports dual monitors.

Crossposting from the iPhone thread cause it's relevant enough here too:
OWC has Apple Lightning cables for $9.90 (...I'd be concerned about "bulk packaged" but OWC is trustworthy as far as Apple stuff, I'll find out in a day or two):

And if anyone wants Bluetooth headphones and/or a portable BT audio adapter, Best Buy has this Sony one on sale for $35 (well black, orange, and turquoise at least, while white and pink are still $50). It's reviewed pretty well on Amazon, and in PCMag's review. Can't start calls/Siri with it though, but apparently you can answer at least.

That is cheap for some legit Apple lightning cables so I picked up some. Bulk packaging just means you aren't getting it retail boxed like you see for sale in stores.

Never had an issue with mine, and the cable itself is sturdier than the Apple one. However, the plastic around the connector is a little bit bigger and makes it not fit with certain cases, but that's more of an iPhone issue from what I've seen.
