I know you said you prefer upbeat things, but for the benefit of others I want to recommend Can's album Tago Mago, and to a lesser extent Ege Byamasi (the latter is still a fantastic album, just not as good for this purpose IMO).

Also, listening to David Bedford's Rime of the Ancient Mariner in the dark on headphones is my favourite way to trip without drugs.

I personally think Aumgn and Peking O would be terrifying on drugs if you haven't heard them before. Really, the best thing for acid listening is music you really, really enjoy. Preferably something with texture that's not too fast - Fennesz and other noise/drone/glitch artists work well for me.

This is a good point, I was intimately familiar with Tago Mago sober before I ever tried listening to it not-sober.

Actually, I used to get mad when I said I liked Can and people said "great shroom music bro," because I was a big fan of them and had never done drugs at all.

God-damn tasty..
I've always sorta liked Tegan and Sara, but moreso as a guilty pleasure. I heard their demos the other day and WHOA jeeez where can I get more of that?

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=O5D578kMe-s this specifically

I would liken it to PJ Harvey, but she's a little too, i don't know, not the same? Maybe it's because my musical taste always gravitates towards first albums and demos; the PJ Harvey albums always sound a little too polished?

Cat Power is good too but kinda hit or miss; this imo is a hit: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kyNBeYSYRpE

Basically gimme some heavy raw music with angry girl vocals and tempo shifts, but whose lyrics sound so personal to be private.

I also like joanna newsom like crazy so maybe they don't even need to be angry or personal; i don't know.

WHERE DO I GO FROM TEGAN AND SARA's RED AND YELLOW DEMO?

If you want to stick with the acoustic sound, have you tried Liz Phair's first album Exile in Guyville?
Not sure if it will be too polished (although it's pretty low fi by today's standards) but the lyrics are certainly personal and there's plenty of anger running throughout.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=V0MwGd6-Sso
There are demos of some of the tracks that sound even rougher
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZHtawJAigsM
As a warning: Every subsequent album after Exile in Guyville is worse than the one before. As much as I hate the term, she's the ultimate example of "selling out" with each album trying to get more poppy and radio friendly.

Sleater-Kinney isn't acoustic but their self-titled first album is rough as hell and probably the most personal. It's also my least favorite.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=K0q6EYTGXXQ
Their next two albums, Dig Me Out and Call the Doctor, are angry, rough, great punk records. I'm not sure if they're quite what you're looking for but might be worth a try.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ywlHaW-TaSE
Still electric but rough as hell is Excuse 17, Carrie Brownstein's pre-Sleater-Kinney project
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7wIQfNWnbS4

And of course there's a mountain of material from Ani Difranco

Hey thread! I think I've posted before but I'll do it again.
Lately I've really been into Crystal Castles (I like most of their stuff although I'm not particularly into their more noise-oriented tracks), Grimes (all of her stuff. all of it), and Chelsea Wolfe (pretty much everything except for her lousy couple of first albums). I've also always liked Cocteau Twins, although oddly enough I've rarely gotten into usual CT "soundalikes". So I guess I'm looking for female vocals that alternate between otherworldly, calm, furious and spooky? With hella cryptic lyrics? 'Juju' by Siouxsie and the Banshees is exactly what you're looking for with the added bonus of having some of the best post-punk guitar work ever. Their first six or so albums are pretty solid with different approaches to instrumentation/writing but 'Juju' is the best work they ever did.

Those OMD albums are indeed good. A few more off the top o' my head, in no particular order:

Human League - Dare
Gary Numan - Pleasure Principle
New Order - Power, Corruption, and Lies
Ultravox - S/T

I'd also recommend Suicide's self-titled album. It's more like proto-synth pop, and it's definitely darker and a bit demented (e.g., "Frankie Teardrop," which is one of the scariest songs of all time), but it is seminal and stunningly good, IMHO. One of my favorites of the 1970s. Here's a couple of the synth poppier tunes (the first one is actually a bonus track from the 2xCD version):

Not sure if this is exactly what you're looking for, but the Sun City Girls--who are a major influence on Animal Collective--get primal and chant-y at times:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=x6CypaG5gqw

Skip to the 5 min. mark for some some tribal drums and chanting (or something like chanting, anyway). It might be worth noting that Sun City Girls are pretty uncompromising in their weirdness, so they can get pretty atonal and un-melodic.

I'm looking for some really soft and mellow jazz that I can listen to while studying.

Something similar to this. Piano, drums and some soft horns. No vocals are preferred.

If you can name specific artists that would be great, but I would be just as happy with the name of a compilation album of this sort of music. Or maybe just help me narrow down my search terms? Whenever I search for jazz I get either something with alot of vocals or something that's way too swingy and up-beat.

I actually tried this out when it arrived, but never quite gave it the time it deserved. I've just given it a full playthrough and it's pretty much how I remember: It's much more ambient and cold, rather than warm and thematic. It's really good though, just not quite what I'm after.

They have two albums, Pale Ravine and Owl Splinters, both are quite good. It's really not the same, as you said, though. Unsurprisingly there's lots of people doing this sort of thing with piano but strings increase the budget/complexity of recording I guess?

One other name that crossed my mind which you've probably checked out is Olafur Arnalds. He may be closer than the others but the thing that stood out to me with Fordlandia and IBM 1401 was the length of the compositions and I think his tracks still tend to be under 5 minutes from what I've seen. I'm honestly not familiar enough with his catalog to give a specific recommendation but he has a boatload of stuff up on Spotify.
