I usually can't watch these Botchamnia because I get annoyed at the banality of some of the poo poo they point out (the point in the videos..I know) but I stuck with this one and it was worth it for that Book T segment at the end  when was this?

Time to relive a great segment from 2 years ago, which consists of 30 minutes of RAW being just HHH, John Cena, Sheamus and CM Punk.

The week before, Triple H set himself up to be the supreme face while making literally everyone else (announcers, camera guys) look like heels

Everything about this is so perfect

I've been looking for this promo for years. It's the opening segment from this Smackdown from right after Royal Rumble 2004.

For context, Smackdown GM Paul Heyman was feuding with Chris Benoit, doing the usual heel GM vs. face upstart storyline. He put a ton of odds against him winning the Royal Rumble and after Benoit succeeded, he showed up on Raw to say that he was going for Triple H's belt instead. Benoit got away from Heyman's bullshit and in turn made him look like a big fool for driving away his Royal Rumble winner to the competition. Vince McMahon was not pleased.

The way Heyman promos his way out of this is awesome.

I actually thought this was really really good and made me appreciate HHH as a performer (when he wasn't burying people) and he does seem like a genuinely nice guy when he's not in shovel mode or whatever.

There was a discussion a few years back where NBA media talked about how the reason Kobe Bryant succeeded and Vince Carter failed was because Vince didn't have that chip on his shoulder that a lot of greats like Michael Jordan, Kareem Abdul Jabbar and Bill Russell had, and Kobe did. Essentially the message was: To be successful in this league, you have to be a bit of a dick if you're the guy to carry your team. Now, there outliers that can be used to dispute this (Tim Duncan springs to mind), but you get the idea.

I get the impression HHH is a person who buys into that idea, and he chose to be successful at any cost. He's still capable of being a nice guy, because he's not a sociopath, but he'd rather be successful.

Well, depends how you mean. When it comes to business, I agree that's clear. But I mean when it comes to how he seems in his personal life. As an example, Michael Jordan is a loving rear end in a top hat in every arena. Full stop. By most accounts, so's Hogan. I don't really feel like HHH is quite in that same mold.

Well sure, but now he is successful and semi-retired and somehow still too insecure to let anyone else get over without his prior approval. HHH isn't a sociopath, but at this point he's definitely an rear end in a top hat who doesn't know when to let go.

I sort of agree with this but it felt somewhat revisionist. This is going to sound cheap - and may well be wrong - but if he is the anointed one in terms of leading WWE post-Vince then it's hardly surprising that tons of people were lining up to say how incredible he is/was. The level of praise was kind of weird because I would never have put him anywhere near The Rock or Stone Cold in terms of impact.

He didn't feel it was the right move, the bigger issue was that WWE didn't want Ventura to come in and preside over a heel winning the belt, so it made sense for them to have Foley win the belt that night.
