Do you enjoy space operas? Watching the rise and fall of civilisations? Wars between millions of men and seeing the greatness and failings of humanity encompassed in a single show (not to mention the acknowledgement of the importance of alcohol to human civilisation)? Watch this show. This thread has been going on for eight plus years and every reader who's come from and watched the show can agree that Legend of the Galactic Heroes is still probably one of the best pieces of science fiction ever produced. There's no magical girls, high school drama or high powered robots. Just commentary from the death of the common soldier to god like men discussing the merits of whether the ultimate benevolent dictatorship is a better form of government than the shittiest most corrupt democracy. Watch this show.

I watched the first episode and thought it was pretty awesome. Just found this thread at a bad time, as I'm currently nearing season 4 of DS9. I'll probably push re-watching B5 to squeeze this in though, it looks excellent. And that almost never happens based on the first episode.

Seriously. Put down whatever you're doing and watch LoGH. I've been going through the series as of late and it's... Well, there's almost no way to describe how amazing it is! I'm a diehard Cowboy Bebop, and for a long time I've considered it to be the greatest anime ever made. LoGH is the only thing to ever fully challenge that number one spot. I’ve never seen a show so absolutely massive in scope, chronicling years of gargantuan war and yet still focusing on single people and their struggles towards a better life for mankind. Every character is shockingly unique and stands out. Even with such a massive cast, I could remember side characters from ten episodes ago from how strong everyone's presented. LoGH is amazingly well put together and beautiful in both visual and audio fields (Especially the audio! Holy poo poo that score). It's breathtaking to watch thousands of ships annihilate each other as a grand orchestra plays, each explosion and counterattack punctuated with trumpets, drums and regiments of violins filling the void of space to become the one true space opera, conquest glittering in the eyes of admirals as millions perish with the commands they shout. LoGH is beautiful, massive, and human in the best possible way. I suggest anyone who appreciates animation to take the OP's recommendation and watch My Conquest Is the Sea of Stars. It's funny that this thread got swapped into TG, because every episode of LoGH never fails to fill my head with tabletop ideas. I remember reading Traveller as a kid, and LoGH is exactly what I pictured in my head for what a real epic space game would be like. If someone found a way to run a LoGH game in here I'd sign up in a millisecond. Also seriously how could you not love a hard sci-fi anime with a mistranslated German title?! Hell yeah. Edit: Goddammit Zorak I'm supposed to be watching Hard Boiled and now my LoGH folder is open saberwulf fucked around with this message at 03:21 on Dec 12, 2013 |

As stupid as it sounds, seeing people post this (and I think a few other screencaps) in the D&D pictures thread got me to finally watch this show. There's pretty much no filler in this series despite being so long, because even bits with characters just idly socializing with each other are well written and memorable. Honestly I feel like this is the sort of thing A Game of Thrones wishes it was. Pornographic Memory fucked around with this message at 03:28 on Dec 12, 2013 |

So, I've heard good things about this game, but it looks like there's entirely too many sourcebooks out, any suggestions for which ones are essential to playing? And, weirdly enough, nowhere in the thread does it mention how you actually play. Like, what's the resolution system? Because if it's d20, that's a dealbreaker.

Actually, since someone brought this up I think it's worth mentioning (it's also in the OP too) a lot of people would recommend watching the two movies, My Conquest is the Sea of Stars, and Overture to a New Battle before the series as they're both really excellently done movies and come before the series chronologically (Overture actually replaces the first 2 episodes).

This show is definitely the best sci-fi production put to screen ever, and at the very least it's the best anime out there. It doesn't matter if you hate any and all anime/movies/tv shows, this show is for everyone and you're just going to have to sit here and love it ok, you don't have a say in this one. Since the show is still unlicensed, you can watch it on youtube if you prefer to not have to wait for the torrents to download, so here's a playlist with high-quality subs of the whole thing: http://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLNyY2F1OurUbDBCtILijHYI52YAiIvSX5 Oh yeah, so you should definitely watch it in the order the OP has it, and even if you find the animation really rough in the first season just deal with it because the story is still awesome and the animation markedly improves in the second season and onwards since they actually got the funding they needed to do it justice after the first season concluded. DON'T watch the episode previews! quote:Movie 1 - My Conquest is the Sea of Stars

I generally detest anime, and am usually vocal about it, but I love me some space opera, so I'm gonna give this a shot. Is there any other series chronology stuff that's recommended (like you say the second "movie" replaces the first 2 episodes, so I'll probably skip those episodes and start on ep3 after the movies) Edit: like the post above me points out, is that it? Or are there more things to do/watch out for?

The music is great! No dub step or weirdly scored pop music, just Wagner and other classical music. I really can't describe how much I love this series since it will unironically ruin any future space operas you see. It's presented as a historical documentary but it plays into so much more. It's outright disturbing how applicable the series is even in this day and age with its comments on terrorism, religious extremism and the nature of war and politics. There is nothing new under the sun and that sun is LOGH.

So I bought a Fezzan expansion for this Board game and I must say that I'm truly unimpressed. Sure they are incredibly full of economic advantages, but their goal to stay neutral while playing both sides is kind of undermined by the fact that the jackasses on my table that went Empire or FPA just kept going after me since my lovely military could barely defend against a zillion battleships. Seriously give the Fezzan at least a loving planetary defense or something.

It is really sad that a show 30 years old is better science fiction than the grand majority of things made in recent years. The characters are really unique, mixing a traditional larger than life space opera cast with a bunch of fairly grounded guys more on the genre savvy side of things. And it depicts corrupt democracies in a way that most media wouldn't dare approach. Don't get me wrong, it is old and it shows, and about the worst thing you can do is get into it thinking it is The Best Thing Ever because it cannot live up to that expectation. It is still better than 90% of fiction ever, though.

It's also one of the only shows I can remember that have a positive portrayal of an absolute dictatorship and to the point where even the people on the other side of the war extol the virtues of being able to quickly and efficiently enact government reforms and acknowledge that total dictatorships aren't inherently evil, it's just another form of government with the real decider being how you run that government. It's the best space opera that you can watch.

A lot of fiction tries to glorify (or at least make sympathetic) authoritarian governments, and a lot more do it through subtext, so I don't think it is particularly unique there. I would say it is unique in that it does depict a benevolent dictatorship with its ups and downs in a fairly grounded, if somewhat archaic and outdated, manner. Really, I just think "alt history show set in the far future" is a better description than sci fi or space opera, and might be a better way to approach the show in general.

Its how it presents itself after all. The opening narration and key points in it are literally a history professor talking to you. What I find fascinating is there is no indication of the professors own culture. Is he white-washing for Rheinhards new order or is he from even further in the future and this is whats left; a mishmash of heroes and fantasy in the vain of the Three Kingdoms period.

Currently watching the last third of this series. Every TG goon needs to watch this. They frame the space battles as 3d Napoleonic line infantry battles with a million men and 30,000 plus ships on each side, all scored to classical music.

Serious post though, it is a Traveller-like series (notable exceptions being FTL communications and energy sidearms as standard). Hell, even Julian has adventures on what's essentially a free trader ship. And yeah, it's pretty much one of the top ten series out there and everyone should watch it. A toast to democracy.

To anyone that's on the fence about watching this, have a post from this thread a few pages back:Benagain posted:Here, have a space opera that is basically one long debate about democracy vs dictatorship. The battles will be patterned after Napoleonic era armies and have tens of thousands of ships per side at least. The politics will be deep and complex. Every character is well motivated. Dumb people die rapidly. It has awesome writing. It features the line 'Alcohol is humanity's oldest friend. Can I abandon a friend?' You will love every major character and curse their success, because it means your other favorite characters are getting hosed over.
