Patch Adams has a kid named Atomic Zagnut Adams. His other kid is named Lars Zig Edquist Adams, which is somewhat less stupid, except that it means the kids are named Zig and Zag[nut].

Overheard a couple talking about their friends' kid while I was on my way to work today: "...oh, you've met those two, they're the ones that named their kid Tyson Rex, so they could call him T-Rex..." On the one hand, I think it's a bad idea to name your kid something to try to force a certain nickname, but on the other hand, that is a cool nickname.

Today at lunch we were talking about the weird names some of the kids at school have. One of my coworkers brought up the old "Female" chestnut, of course through a friend of a friend. Another nodded and said it was quite common in the black community. I really thought this was one of those things that everyone's heard hundreds of times before, but everyone else laughed. I just kept eating.

Had a girl in my grade named Temptress I always figured her mom must have been feeling pretty resentful when she was born or something. I really have no idea what would compel someone to name their child that way.

Not a terrible name but a great name: If you live anywhere around the Le Droit Park neighborhood in DC and are looking for a dentist, consider Dr. Gail Cherry-Peppers.

When I was a kid there was a guy at our church named Dick Titley. I also remember a guy that worked at Babbage's whose name was Nimrod. Apparently it is a Biblical name, not sure why it isn't more popular. Once upon a time I worked with a guy whose last name was Suk (different offices though, I really only knew him by reputation). Not all that funny by itself, but the next person in the company directory was named Swallow.

Nimrod in the Bible is a great hunter. Bugs Bunny used it sarcastically as an insult for Elmer Fudd, but because it's so funny sounding people just thought it meant moron.

The chief of the police in Finland was, until 2004, a guy called Nailhead (Naulapää), the name Firefist (Tulikoura) is real and in use (there is at least a laser surgeon and a firefighter by that name), and there was a member of the military who is usually interviewed in the TV about various conflicts called Colonel Major, (Eversti Majuri), Colonel was his rank and Major his surname.

Norwegian doesn't really go for nicknames in the way English does. Thus, Robert is a name people will pronounce in full, and Bob is a distinct and different (if unusual) name. See also Raymond and Randi. The former is a boy's name and the latter a girl's name, of course. (I'm a Daniel, which is uninterestingly normal. "Dan", on the other hand, is rare and hints at "my parents had satellite TV in the 80s and no taste".)

Where I'm from (in Australia), Emerald is not an uncommon girl's name. Pearl, on the other hand, is practically unheard of in the area where I grew (and have subsequently lived; I have never met a single person called Pearl). I did, however, grow up with a boy called Emerald (which was very uncommon), who had an older brother called Juno (named, I assume, after the Roman Queen of the heavens).
