Season 1 isn't very good but it gets better so if you like it now you'll really like it later. Also the movie finale is really good.

I need some new detective/mystery shows. I've seen all the Sherlock Holmes series, Poirot, Psych, Columbo, Luther, Cracker, Frost (not a fan of the latter two). What about Miss Marple, any good? Any other recommendations on Netflix or Amazon Prime? Preferably with an emphasis on mystery.

You should watch Twin Peaks.

Also, everyone in the world should watch Twin Peaks.

I really enjoyed The Fall with Gillian Anderson. Like Top Of The Lake it is not a case of the week but it is a strong cop/crime story.

Also, don't think it is streaming but Broadchurch is another solid English cop show.

The Fall is on my watchlist; been wanting to watch Broadchurch. Top of the Lake is now on my watchlist.

I'll second "The Fall" with Gillian Anderson. Really excellent, 4 long episodes. It is a dark serial killer story, not at all light hearted like the modern Sherlock Holmes (which is preposterous but great fun).

I just think it's a whole lot better than most of the other shows that have serial killers as the subject matter. It's of the genre where you know who the killer is right away, he is one of the major characters whose story is told in parallel with that of the detective on the case (Anderson). It's really the fact that the villain is such an interesting and compelling character that makes the show, and even slightly sympathetic in an odd way, it's not a hammy Hannibal Lecter type role at all.

This. The series will be continuing as well last I checked.

I watched about 3/4 of season one and was bored to death with it, but I started season two the other night and I am loving it. The setting for it is far more interesting and I am really liking the new cast members added with the old ones.

The Killing is a bit uneven and really grim (moreso than even Luther imo) but I definitely got hooked. Watch it for the main character's sweaters.

Watched a few episodes of Ripper Street and I'm on the fence whether I like it or not. It's well done but so similar to Copper that it distracts me and that's all I can think of while watching it. Basically it is Copper but in London with a "Yankee" doctor instead of a former slave. Also the first episode has more boobies in 49 minutes than I've seen in any other show including porn.

Murdoch Mysteries is again similar except based in Toronto, is more light hearted and less realistic. I kind of liked it though. Also the first episode has Nikola Tesla as a character.

Haha, therein lies the rub, as some of the newcomers/replacements to team need to learn. Sure there are bad guys, like the drug dealer who holds an undercover cop and a teen hostage during a drug bust gone bad. He kills the teen as the SRU smash through. But just as often, things are all over the scale of good/bad, or as one of the cops says, "We are catching people in the worst moments of their lives, Bill. The very worst moment."

I really enjoy this show, and it's nice to see a show where there are usually consequences for lethal force being used. The sniper makes a decision in the very first episode that although was basically 100% justified, he still has to live with it, emotionally and legally, and the fallout keeps popping back up throughout the season as he has to go through review boards and deal with the mental strain of having to make that decision.

Yeah it's usually pretty nuanced, which is nice. There's a guy who holes up in a hospital with hostages because his daughter, who was in need of a heart transplant, got skipped over, and another one where a kid shoots his abusive father and then goes into hiding, and they have to track him down.

I'd think that watching those episodes without having followed the characters up to that point would diminish the effect. I would just start watching from Season 2 if you're not in love with the show. I hated it when it first aired, but it became one of my all-time favorites. Just watch the first episode for the premise.

I finally saw that Blackfish movie I've been hearing so much about. If you hadn't heard of it, it's a bit of an expose about the unceremonious way Orcas are captured and held for show parks, and it points to some negligence that leads to tragedy for whale and trainer alike. It's hard not to get captivated by the Orca documentaries they have up. Really interesting stuff. I definitely teared up at a few points.

Blackfish is very sad. You go in knowing, yeah, these parks probably aren't great for the whales and sure they're big wild animals, but you definitely see a lot more of the poo poo that's happened at the parks around the world and that these animals are smart and definitely not Flipper the happy dolphin.

I went to the California Seaworld when I was ten and while I don't remember how my dad reacted, he said he was mortified that they were making big, intelligent, dangerous animals do puppy tricks.

Blackfish is a great, but very sad documentary. I watched it in one of my classes yesterday and the thing that horrified my classmates the most was when a sea lion got eaten by a bunch of orcas. :psyduck: They were also cooing over how cute Tilikum is. Which confused me too, because Tilikum has brutally killed three people so far.

Only complaint I have about Blackfish is that they keep referring to orcas as "whales," even though they're actually dolphins, but that's kind of nit-picky.

Watched episode 1 of The Fall after many recommendations and I have some issues with it. Mostly that it doesn't seem to have a plot but is about 50% montages of uninteresting characters doing mundane things occasionally interrupted by plot-like happenings. That said it is otherwise well made and I really want to like it but I had to take 4 breaks during the first episode. And please, no one say "slow burn" because it isn't. Literally half the episode contributed no story or character development. Does it get better?

A lot of the revival episodes have fallen relatively flat for me. This newest season though, I was pretty impressed with most of the episodes. The plots were mostly coherent, and I laughed out loud on several occasions. I'm kind of bummed because watching made me feel like they were hitting their stride again.
