Don't forget good wool socks. I like SmartWool, they're expensive but they'll last for a long time and they're really comfortable on top of keeping you warm.

Bridgedale makes good socks too. It's just personal preference but I like them better than Smartwool. They're about the same price range but for some reason I tend to wear holes in the heels of my Smartwool socks after a while, and I've had Bridgedale socks for over 3 years that look new. You might feel stupid paying $20 for a pair of socks but they're sooooo much better.

I wear a pair of Vasque temperate hiking boots with wool synthetic socks for my winter boots. They were super expensive like six years ago but they're awesome. I find actual purpose-built winter boots to be a bit overkill if I'm walking. If I had to stand outside for some reason regularly then sure.

It's more often used as a third person plural though, as in "detain those Hajis" so it's not exactly what you're thinking of but it's probably the closest thing that we have now.

Is it meaningful to compare something's monetary value a long time ago versus today? For example, "This house cost $X in 1960, which is $Y in today's dollars." Is it that straightforward or does the housing market make it impossible to have one answer? What about comparing 'baskets' of goods? Does this question make any sense? I'm asking because somebody told me there's no way to translate the selling price of his childhood home a long time ago into what that money would equal now. But I hear people comparing "19XX dollars to 20XX dollars" all the time.

Is it that straightforward or does the housing market make it impossible to have one answer? What about comparing 'baskets' of goods? Does this question make any sense? Ok, well there's two parts to this. And I'm not an economist so I may butcher it. It's possible to compare past money to present money using purchasing power parity (the cost of poo poo from sources like the consumer price index and income) and inflation and market values and stuff. The other part, which is to say that a single item or group of items cannot be extrapolated to its present value is quite different because of opportunity costs and the huge difference in available options. Sure you can say that a loaf of bread cost a dime and now costs 2.50, but a dime was worth 1.50 using the comparison above so bread is now more expensive relatively, but when you look at a house or car, you have to consider opportunity costs. Like, if you invested 5k in 1931 instead of buying a car you'd have n 30 years later, but public transit and work culture and a shitload of other variables may have meant that that 5k was much better spent on a car. That doesn't mean that 5k is equal to the amount it could have returned if invested or the PPP value of the 5k or the blue book value of the car itself but something novel and irreconcilable in terms of present value.

Would an optical audio out port on a TV send a direct bitstream copy of audio that the tv received via whatever is the selected hdmi input? Or is it just for outputting audio from the tv's built-in dtv/catv tuner? (that I don't use) My tv, a low or midrange model 55" Toshiba from 2010 has an optical out on it. I've always had my receiver as the "heart"/switcher of my system and not my tv, so I've never cared about this and the manual is unclear. I've run out of inputs on the receiver. I'm adding an xbox 360. My plan is to keep switching everything from the receiver except the 360, plug it into hdmi #2 on the tv and run an optical from the optical out on tv to an optical in on receiver. The optical out on your TV should route the sound from any HDMI input to your receiver. This is great for us, because we have a smart TV and it is so much better to watch Netflix movies and stuff with the real speakers instead of the lovely ones on the TV. If it doesn't work for your TV, I think the 360 has its own optical out, or at least it did when it still used component video.

Thanks. It's hard to get back there to experiment on mine. I am going to try before I call this the plan. And it looks like 360 does have a dedicated optical out like you say so I'll definitely have something that works. (but just like my plan that will involve switching inputs on both tv and receiver when switching to or from the 360.) Another question for anyone who may know. Is it easy to get blu-rays to play preferably in vlc and definitely with their dts or whatever unmolested audio stream coming out the htpc's optical? I've just started looking at guides for vlc. It's not built-in. I'm thinking as an alt way to get the 360 plugged in and keeping the recv as the heart, ordering a $25 bluray drive for the htpc, giving the living room bluray player to the kids and freeing up an input on the receiver for the 360. E: kids are getting 360 for Xmas but it will live in living room. They're young enough not to care that it isn't the Xbone. Vin BioEthanol fucked around with this message at 23:05 on Dec 15, 2013 |

I'm having a hard time understanding how exactly getting a phone plan without a contract works. It seems like all these pay as you go companies require you to use certain specific phones. Are there ones that don't? For instance, if I buy a Nexus directly from Google, and I have it in hand, is there actually somewhere I can go to buy a plan for it? For some reason the impression I'm getting from the websites of these no-contract carriers is that you have to choose one of their phones then after that you choose a plan.

Look at the prepaid thread in IYG. Lots of info there, use whatever gsm/hspa maybe gsm/hspa+lte phone you want. I know this is the way it worked last time I looked into prepaid on the walmart/straighttalk/att-towers sim-only plan, might be better ones now.

I've always just called it a "power cut." Edit: I guess that's not what's happening in the video, but what's in the video is meant to sound like the same thing, or the equivalent in a cassette deck or powering down electronic gizmo. But I am much less aggressive and insistent and rude than many hard core skeptics and lefties etc who seem to go straight for the throat. Am I flagged in some way? Anyway out of this?

I'm using Google Chrome, and for some reason, whenever I close the browser, it logs me out of all of my websites. When I go to log back in, all of my information is saved, and I just have to hit Enter to log in. Nonetheless, it's annoying as poo poo to take an extra step when I visit any website. Any idea what setting I somehow changed to make this happen?

KernelSlanders posted:What is this and how do I make it stop spraying steam all over my apartment? That's a pressure release valve unless I'm mistaken, which means the pressure in your system is most likely too high if it's actually spraying steam. If it's just sort of dripping, it could be because your radiator isn't level. Get your boiler looked at by a professional.
