This kinda sounds like an Azalea Banks beat.

what do you usually sidechain compress? I used to just sidechain compress almost everything but I realize I've prolly been overzealous with it.

Also, something that a few people said was that they felt like my samples weren't blending together. Could anyone provide some insight? I figured they meant that I should make my samples 'blend in' a bit more, but that's something I've been having a tough time doing. Hmm.

I tend to sidechain droney noises or bass noises and i side chain them to the kick/808/full kit to move them out of the way so the drums smack

Blending samples is all about EQ as well as the TUNE of them. If the EQ clashes they sound like they are from diff sources which can be cool but not as a mistake.

For the tune if they don't match the song will sound lovely in general - again you can flip this but its a dedicated effort not automatic.

Any links for reference? Hard to give theoretical advice without being able to diagnose.

its not exact science but generally you shouldn't have two samples occupying the same frequency range at the same time if they don't harmonize really well

Thanks peeps. I think I've started to get the hang of mixing and making it sound nice, but I'm having trouble with song structure still. The openings are pretty neat, but after that, it's basically just a repeating drum-loop. I love Kendrick's Backseat Freestyle, which is pretty repetitive, but doesn't seem tedious at all. It just makes you wanna groove. I need to get on that poo poo.

Also, since the year is almost through, I just wanna post the first (and one of my favorite) tracks from one of the best hip-hop releases of the year, Acid Rap. Open discussion and analysis is encouraged!

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ftSUchAdVTE

I really like his use of the backing vocals and piano chords to evoke a very 'soul' or 'jazzy' vibe, which the whole album is drenched in. I'm sure someone can phrase that more elegantly than I.

Also, love the fact he put it up online for free. I'm really liking that shift in music culture.

It's not tedious because Kendrick is murdering the verse over it. If you listen to beat tapes or follow producers on soundcloud you'll notice most people won't make a full length beat because you can get the jist of the vibe and sonics of it in just a minute or two. Then when you have someone to rap over it you can nail down the structure and flesh it out.

What do you think of my jams where I get the beat going then drop some keys to give you that phonk/make it more interesting to listen to?

I'm an eager beaver to get back in the studio with a collaborator... my friend who rapped on a few of the tracks on my SC is competent but I have a little problem with him 'cuz he never WRITES and instead just freestyles and I've noticed him reusing the same lines/being sloppy.

No I think that's the way to do it. Get as many sections of your beat in there as you can but my point was there's no point in making a 32 bar verse if it's just basically the same 16 bars twice.

I think the tune is tight as gently caress but you need to clean up those vocals!

WEEK 1 - RETIRED
https://soundcloud.com/aeglus/ristorante-unknown

Just starting to get into making some beats since venues in Korea want me to go that route. Going to have a friend freestyle over the instrumental it and see how it goes (I added the vocal from a track on a Nujabes mixtape and just chopped it a bit more on the second and 3rd drops). The other sample is also something Nujabes sampled but sped up a bit; I didn't realize exactly where he sampled from until after I made the track as it is.

Just went for something chill in this one and to learn Ableton without having a lot of complication in mastering. Going disco house next but looking for feedback on how I managed this track first. Also if people want a wav to rap over I'd be happy to dropbox it.

e: but seriously tho no disrespect but while we're waiting ill try to answer your question kinda, even though im also curious as to thndrthfs coldness to him. lil b isnt really revered for his rapping or production abilities at all; but i think his artistic process and work ethic is where his talent lies. he's just kinda unique and i think definitely has had at least some sort of an influence on some of your favourite new rappers so learn from whoever u want imo

he can definitely rap though. i own swag is one of the most hype go-dumb songs ever, and it's a response/remix to a worse Lil B/Swag diss song by david banner so it's even more awesome

when i flew out there he flew to new york, did a show at santos party house, blew up and went on MTV the next day, did a video with tony yayo

then when i talked to him again he wanted $5,000 for one verse, to which i said no thank you

imo he releases too much stuff with no quality control. "i'm god" is p much his best poo poo.

holy poo poo dude thanks for letting us in on that. i dont forgive the basedgod for this. he is still cool to me but i dont like all his business practices. he very openly has high asking prices and abuses the heck out of social media now but obviously that hasnt always been the case. his history of being a myspace/internet rapper is what makes him interesting to me and i try to learn from everyone, though i wouldnt call him a role model exactly. i do enjoy his 'positive/motivational/based' music approach that i think artistically expresses some poo poo that isn't really expressed in a lot of rap

there are definitely better influences past and present, and agreed on the overall lack of quality control (some of his tapes supersede that like gods father imo but thats for a different thread), but i think his lack of quality control is a double edged sword that mostly works because he's Lil B; without it he wouldn't be him. i can't give a less recursive explanation of why i like him than that.

sick Premier vid too. Sorry for being off topic i just felt obliged with the lil b posts and whatnot. next time i post itll hopefully be with a new beat or rap song i made. working on my own quality control again lol (which was the plan originally with that #50songs). just spread my areas of learning too far too fast i think so my beats and raps both suffer i think right now or something

edit- no disrespect to tony yayo but that song would've been much sicker as lil b + thndrthf just sayin
