Chyna was pretty popular, relatively speaking, in the Attitude Era, and now she's got drug and alcohol problems and is doing porn. Really, Chris Kanyon's story is just depressing as hell, too.

apparently she's involved in a private English tutoring school somewhere in the Tokyo area now. I remember hearing about it last year, and then a Tokyo-based expat mentioned it a month or two ago on a gaming podcast so while I'm hardly going to hunt down where she's working it's safe to say she's in ~glorious Japan~ now.

I think if you're going to be so cold as to power-rank the saddest wrestling stories, the Von Erichs and Owen have to be near the top.

Everyone has their Owen Hart stories, but I have to admit that some of them really rub me the wrong way, like the Tonight Show thing. So Ahmed Johnson gets tricked into dropping a few thousand bucks on a fancy suit -- to me, that's not funny, it's just kind of being a prick. I'm all about practical jokes and pranks, but when your pranks cause people to spend money for no reason or actually get into a fight (there's a story Foley tells about Owen instigating a fight between a wrestling show promoter and the arena sound guy), that just crosses a line for me.

I might agree about the suit thing, except that Ahmed didn't come across as bitter about it, he seemed to look back on it as a "I was mad as hell at the time, but think of it as funny now" thing.

But yeah, instigating a fight and the non-apology to Austin are good points.

Wrestlers are pretty hosed up people.

The industry is full of disgusting stories, fraternity culture, racism, misogyny and homophobia. There are very few people involved in the industry who I could say are stand up decent human beings. Owen was seen as one of the good ones because he's compared to guys who have an obsession of making GBS threads in gym bags.

That being said, there is evidence that the culture has changed tremendously in the last ten years and is finally evolving from its carny roots.

Yeah, this comes up every now and then in the Carnies, Racists and Perverts thread: why do we not have a "Good guys and gals of wrestling" thread? It's because once you say that Mick Foley, Mean Gene and Molly Holly are all good people, you really run out of steam. They're few and far between :smith:

They mentioned that in the other thread and said that it'd basically be full of John Cena stories.

It wasn't "dirtsheets" that started that, it was his own writing which was really loving creepy about Melina in both blog and book form.

If you have a subscription for F4W they have an awesome interview with Paul Heyman about Lou Albano back in the day after his death. He did drink a lot and he had stories of him speeding while intoxicated. Including pissing on the side of the road and then shaking the hands of police officers because they were so excited to meet him.

Thing is, we have no idea what his relationship with his wife is like. You can't automatically assume he's cheating, especially if, y'know, he wrote about it in a NYT bestseller.

Mick's a pretty insecure guy by his own admission, and he worked in the most aesthetics-first company in a very aesthetics-first business, so of course he's going to act goony when hot girls pay attention to him. Let's not make any assumptions about his marriage though, especially since he's also been pretty open with his wife about life on the road.

Mick's "Carnies/Racists/Perverts" entry should basically be "Wrote The Hardcore Diaries." I had only that book to keep me company on a three-day train ride and it still pisses me off how bad it was.

I haven't read Countdown to Lockdown.

The section about Captain Lou in The Masked Man's book just talks about how he worked himself into stardom by making the most of every opportunity to an almost excessive level. More character flaw than real "evil/burying" kind of thing, but a flaw nonetheless.

Except for Molly Holly. I won't hear a single bad word against her. I'm pretty sure she's actually a saint.

Yeah, it was from Paul Bearer's shoot interview, when Paul would travel with Taker, and found out Taker has a huge phobia of cucumbers, to the point where he couldn't even stand to be in the same room as them, so Paul as a rib would put slices of cucumber in Taker's gloves or boots.
