This.
Changes.
EVERYTHING.
I like the Canadian system for flight plans a LOT better than the American one. You don't have to "open" your FP, it's opened automatically at your departure time. If you depart a towered airport, tower will amend your departure time to the minute you actually departed. When you land at a towered airport, Ground will close your flight plan for you nine-times-out-of-ten without you even asking and will just tell you so when giving you taxi instructions. If not you can "fast-close" one by phone. Virtually every controller along the way has the ability to modify it as well, so if you need to modify it you can just ask anyone along the way - they don't technically have to do it for you, but I've never had it denied when asking politely.

Flight Plans, or a Flight Itinerary left with a "responsible person," are also mandatory any time you go more than 25nm from where you departed, which is pretty much every flight except flight training.

I just make sure to leave a trail of pilot deviations, airspace violations, and near misses with airliners such that somebody is watching where I am at all times. Sometimes you even get your own jet escort right to your destination, I love flying with them in formation, it's awesome!

Do they even help you out of the plane upon landing, with a group of armed guards to escort you to your welcome party?

Thanks. Honestly, no clue on the party. I don't drink(my body literally can't take it any more) and I'm blowing a bunch of money on winter wheels/tires and a week long snowboarding trip in 3 weeks on top of multiple other mini snowboarding trips planned over the next few months. I'll have plenty of time not working to figure it all out though!

Alaska Airlines posted hiring FOs... 3000 hours or 1200 military time. That seems quite generous to mil people, even moreso then the standard .3 multiplier.

Regardless, anyone here with high time going to apply?

I wish I had the 3000 hours. Yeah, it may be generous to military guys but they have a 'type' that they like- I mean, it used to be pretty normal for mil guys to go directly to the majors, now it seems like some go to the regionals.
I very much want to work for them, and I hope that being from Seattle helps, they seem to like people with roots in the northwest.
I had a blast interviewing with them for their internship, even if I didn't get it. Unrelated, but last week I got two really good "tell me about a time you were flying with somebody who wanted you to do something illegal/unsafe" stories, in case I ever get asked that.

Did anyone not see this coming?

After the merger, American has enough regionals that they can afford to close one down as a warning to the surviving carriers to bend over or else, and since they're asking for similar concessions from Eagle and Expressjet, it'll be interesting to see if either pilot group caves and votes for the deal.

But hey, the AA/US merger is supposed to make everybody fart rainbows and sunshine, right?

On a merger-related note, Doug Parker is putting the fate of AA's new livery to an employee vote. The choices are:

...the latter actually making the former look decent while making AA look bipolar Continited-style.

They're also going to add a TWA retrojet and keep one US plane as a retrojet.

Anyone have any experience with Premier Flight Academy in Cleveland out of Burke Lakeshore? Their rates seem really reasonable for PPL and they operate DA20s. They also have 172/82s and Piper 140s available.

The Slaughter
Jan 28, 2002

I thought the rates were amazing til I saw they were dry. I would certainly budget more than 35 Hours for ppl and assume the higher figures for fuel, I seriously doubt almost anybody at their school achieved those figures.

Are you actually closest to Burke, or would you actually be a little further south? There are some smaller fields with varying rates depending on where you actually are. I just have experience with the Premier office in Wadsworth (3G3), which just has a 172. (Though it is nice enough.) They seem like good people, if you don't mind spending the money.

I'm in Shaker. I have family in Elyria so I've considered that field as well but I don't know what's out there yet. Wadsworth is quite a bit out of the way, but I really appreciate the suggestion.

There's also Cuyahoga Country Airport (CGF) which is even closer than Burke.

Edit:

It's interesting how far apart in estimates different schools can be. Premier Flight Academy estimates $6k on the outside for full zero to PPL, while the school at Elyria (http://www.premierflightacademy.com/tuition-fees.htm) estimates almost $10k.

Although $10k does include a late-model 172SP with a G1000.

To be complex per the FAA, the aircraft must have retractable landing gear, flaps, and a variable pitch propeller. Pressurized aircraft would require a high altitude endorsement (and probably a high performance endorsement), but most people get the complex endorsement as part of the single engine commercial training.
