Reading the Ririko after-story on the Sharin no Kuni fandisk. None of the after-stories have been good but this one is downright painful. So far this is pretty much the entire after-story so far. Pointless random conversations. God make it stop!! This dialogue is awful! What can I even say at this point? *sigh* Lovely. So the story of this day in the game. Ririko wakes him up at 5am, gets bored so they play a word association game, she's not any good at it and gets bored again, she suggest they go to the cave, they get to the front of the cave and have a small argument about NOTHING and she goes home without ever entering the cave. This is pointlessness: the route. Stall_19 fucked around with this message at 11:07 on Dec 28, 2013 |

ADullMin posted:If it ends well you probably shouldn't read the after story. That's the thing, I didn't think Sharin no Kuni ended well at all. With the way the story is structured there is barely any romantic development between Kenichi and any of the girls and a couple of the epilogues were pretty much "We couldn't find room to have this girl's H scene in the story so here you go". So I figured these after-stories at least do what Sharin didn't and somewhat develop the romances. I was wrong. Sachi's is probably the best but even that is not that good. Well, I'm going to finish Ririko's just out of pure stubbornness. There's got to be something here, I mean the most significant thing that has happened in the story so far is they got lost in a cave for a little bit.

Oh hey I'm reading Sharin no Kuni right now. Basically I couldn't bother continuing pretty early on with Little Busters or Muv Luv but this got me going, so here we go.

Not to say Sharin no Kuni is bad, since it isn't, but you should definitely give those other two more of a shot. The payoff on them is worth it, especially on Muv Luv.

I believe the story with Sharin no Kuni was that the sex scenes, the epilogue and the heroine after stories were written by a separate author, so they differ drastically in quality and tone. If you want something more after the ending, the prequel story in the fan disk eventually ties back into the events of the original story and gives it a bit more closure. The heroine specific after stories are absolutely worthless unless you want another sex scene and some lol-random bullshit (wwwwhhhhhyyyyyy?). If you want to get the best experience out of SnK, reject all the romance scenes (the main character doesn't have to be mean to any of them, he just needs to say No). It's probably the least obnoxious route. Or just stop reading right as the epilogue starts and go straight to the prequel story.

As having read both over the past two months, G-Senjou No Maou is definitely way better. There's a lot of good ideas in SnK, but they don't really come together in a strong cohesive way the way G Senjou does.

Saigyouji posted:One note about Virtue's Last Reward: Don't read the gold files until you've finished the route you found them on. They're full of spoilers. Funny, I'm doing just that. Actually I'm just going to complete every puzzle room on easy first before attempting them on hard. So far I've gone into the center section with the choices of yellow door, ally, and exploring those paths. I've gotten Quark's bad ending, an annoying lock on what's probably his true ending, entered and exited the infamous PEC room of glitching with no problems and have yet to get an actual ending after fiveish hours of play. So far have continued to explore the closest nearby branch offs by allying with the old guy. Gonna feel real bad about having to betray him later to see every event since he kept his word in the end. Speculation (Ever17 spoilers) since there's a Tief Blau like virus afoot and that apparently some time has passed since the group's kidnapping I'm going to say most of them were actually cryogenically frozen just like in Ever17 to prevent them from coming into contact with Radical 6. Except for Quark who was already infected prior to the kidnappings but was allowed to come thanks to his grandfather's connections and desire to have him cured. Oh and Luna definitely worked on the same project the old guy did, since she seems to have prior knowledge of the virus. On non spoilery thoughts, wow this game somehow manages to look graphically worse than 999 despite being on a more powerful system, at least as far as the sprites/models go. planetarial fucked around with this message at 03:07 on Dec 29, 2013 |

It's best not to get too hooked up on "endings" in VLR. And yeah, the switch from sprites to models was never going to do it any favors. You do get more movement with models, which helps occasionally, but you lose a lot of detail compared to sprites. And it doesn't help that the prerendered sequences look so different from the in-game models; the end result feels very PS1-era. Still, we don't play it for the eye candy (no matter what Alice and Clover's character designers seem to think).

This makes me glad I dropped SnK right at the end and never turned back. Now I've decided to give Umineko a try and... Its not what I expected really. I'm just at the bit after everybody finds Maria as she's looking for the rose and she says she received an umbrella from Beatrice and I honestly dont know what to make of the story so far. The one thing I know for certain: Rudolf is the worst person in recorded history. Who the gently caress names their kid Battler of all things. George, Jessica and Maria all sound fine, but Battler?

I don't remember exactly where it's mentioned, but I'm pretty sure Kinzo chose the names of all his children and grandchildren. Something that doesn't come across in the English version is that they don't actually have western names; they all have extremely strange and contrived Japanese names that have been chosen to sound like western names.

# ? Dec 29, 2013 15:40 |

They talk about it at the very beginning of the game. Even with the translation patch they show the equivalent Kanji up and at least with Battler talk about how they would "normally" be read and how they are actually read to wind up as the mess that is his name.

Oh, the bit about Kinzo choosing all the names makes everything make more sense. Rudolf is still a dick for letting his son be called Battler.

He still did some of the art in RGD But I don't care, time to GET HYPE. I would've preferred a new story but as long as it's not one of those short fandisc games like Tsubasa/Hane/Rei it will probably still rock.

I've always found Christine Love's VNs to be pretty forgettable, the only thing I remember about Hate Plus is that the blonde A.I. kills herself and then gets replaced by a more politically correct 2.0 Version, and the only reason I remember that was because she made an unattainable achievement for beating the game without her killing herself, which I guess was a way to troll people that like her instead of the mass murdering A.I.

So euh, I've been reading the Ever17 LP and holy crap I'm barely at the middle. It's not been that crazy interesting so far, but I loved 999/VLR. Does it really get that good? I don't see a lot of foreshadowing except the 'life reading' thing.

E17 is all payoff (the ending sequences of each route, and the true route). I think it's a fairly polished experiment on what you can do with the VN format as a narrative medium, but I wouldn't recommend it to people unless they liked every theme approached by it.

Honestly, she's at her best when she's just goofing around and not taking things seriously (see: Kendall in Don't Take it Personally Babe), so I'm hoping she just has fun with this and maybe make a point along the way instead of trying to be *deep*. I think her manipulation thing is a bit silly - all social interaction is, in a way, manipulation - but I agree that a lot of games treat sex as just a flag post or an end goal instead of something meaningful.
