Make sure you're running in hardware mode... the terrainmods in OldFashioned are HD (meaning, greater texture quality than the game was originally intended to handle,) and won't work in software mode. Also, make sure the game is set to run on just one core. Other than that, it's hard to tell what's wrong without more info.

Anything you're doing that's causing a crash other than opening cities?

That's the thing. There's nothing else that are causing these crashes. I did the fix posted in the OP about playing the game in hardware mode and it worked once, but I'm back to crashing. I haven't tried setting the game to work on only one core, so I guess that's what I'm gonna do next.

Edit: Uhhh :stare:. Looks like I had the weirdest fix. My screen would flicker like crazy if I tried to play in hardware mode without that fix, but what I had to do to fix it is to start a new city and plants lots of trees and make fuckloads of animals and then my game is running smoothly. :iiam:

So did I do something wrong or?
I downloaded the game, patched it, installed the OldFashioned 3.0 pack, extracted that into the Simcity 4 folder in my Documents and patched the game with the 4GB patch for good measure. Now the game just automatically turns itself off when I try to start a new city. No warnings nor errors. Just turn off :(

Edit: Nevermind. Had to mess around a bit with the settings and now it works perfectly :3:. Time to create an awesome city!
2ndedit: and now its back to crashing again ahahahah :suicide:

I ran into something that made my disc copy crash out no matter what I did, including total uninstalls and clean reinstalls. It wouldn't patch, wouldn't load, so I said gently caress it and dropped :10bux:x2 on Steam and haven't looked back.

I still suck at city planning though, but I've started on a smaller region to try and hone my skills a bit, trying to think regionally instead of individually.

Wodensgrove for example is a sleepy, low density, rich folk town hidden behind a wall of trees, while Muspell and Svartheim are dirty/heavy industry towns, vigorously re-wooded to help with pollution. Vikarstead is the region's current transit hub, with a port and airport. Eventually I plan on turning the pristine Wodensborg forest into the core of the region with high density commercial and residential zoning.

I just restarted my Fhuzo region too, but I get lost for direction when I'm working with the maximum sized city plots. Here's where I'm at with Craterbank, at present the only city.

linked for file size reasons

The bottom is all residential, and around the casino is commercial leading into residential again. I had planned on serving the industrial areas with rail but ended up making a total mess because stupidly I tried to ensure each junction allowed a train going one way to change direction pretty easily thanks to the dangled carrots offered by completing the U-Drive-It goals.

If anyone could offer any pointers for large city layouts I'd be greatly appreciative.

I haven't played SC4 for about a year and am thinking about getting back into it. I've been using GrandFromage's mod pack; has anyone used both that and the OldFashioned pack for comparison? I'm not sure which one I should use this time around.

OldFashioned's more up to date and last I looked was pretty great, but I used both GrandFromage's and the first iteration of OldFashioned at the same time and the conflicts were few and far between. Remember though, as someone upthread said, this game runs on bizarre and arcane incantations at best so there are really no guarantees if you try that.

I'd say grab OldFashioned, you won't really go wrong with it and if you do, it's not a big deal to clear the mod folder and put other stuff in.

Yeah.

Speaking of incantations, in my experience you get much better performance on the software renderer due to some issues with the hardware one, but you need to use the hardware renderer for Old Fashioned Pack, so

You don't, really; you just need hardware for the terrain mods. Delete the terrainmods folder and it should run just fine in software (though you might not like the look of the stock terrain, especially next to all the custom buildings.)

Remember that my pack is literally just a dump of my plugins folder that has never been organized or managed in any way. It works fine for me but it's not intentionally assembled like the Old Fashioned pack, so god only knows what's going on in there.

I don't suppose anyone's ever compiled a bunch of the Hong Kong BAT Team's stuff into a single convenient download? I had a whole load of their stuff on my old computer and it was pretty great, but hosed if I'm going through that rigmarole all over again.

I'm in much the same boat, just going through HKABT's timeline and grabbing the buildings one by one. Thankfully they don't seem to have many dependencies. Bixel, the guy who made most of their buildings, has some of his stuff in packs. Here's one for most of his pencil towers.

So what the hell is happening here?

Those blank zones are still perfectly playable once I enter them, but it's affecting Bad Part of Town because trains won't enter apparently. I used to fix it by simply going into the city, save it and then go back to zone view but now nothing works.

I've had that happen to me a couple times. I thought it was a rendering error or something to do with the regional heightmap, but now I'm not quite sure.

It happens if at any point during the saving process the SimCity 4 game loses system focus. If you're playing windowed and you, say, browse the internet while saving, this will usually happen as well as the previously mentioned alt-tabbing.

Going to ask again if anyone knows a nice plugin compilation for the game that I can just drop and play. I tried mixing NAM and CAM myself but it ended pretty horribly(CtDs!), so I was hoping someone could point me in a good direction. :shobon:

Yeah, I suggest just using the ones in the thread. Apparently the mod community has weird hang ups about making bundles and whatnot because they all have their independent mod exchanges and exclusive stuff.

Used the old fashioned pack and manually fix and brown boxes and be happy with it. You can do a lot with it.

A sidewalk mod will at least tone it down, try picking one of these:

http://sc4devotion.com/csxlex/lex_filedesc.php?lotGET=2850

As for an actual solution - I'm trying to remember, I don't have this problem anymore. I think building cross-streets all the way through your avenue should fix it; cross-roads might do even better. I am wondering if some of the NAM configs fix it though. Sorry I can't be of more help, but again, I haven't had that problem in some time.

It was mentioned a while ago in the thread and the idea is brewing - I've got half a mind to do a goofy HK/asian pack. Content would probably be a little spottier than for OldFashioned (there's not nearly as much low-density stuff, mostly,) and frankly I've never even been to Asia, so I don't know enough to get all the little details right - I'm probably not the perfect guy to do it. But it could be pretty fun to play. Is there interest for something like this?

It's been a bit since I've played but that doesn't look out of the ordinary for a low density industrial area. Missing dependencies has really obvious signs like the brown boxes, it's generally not just invisible pieces. I'm pretty sure it always has a ton of empty tiles with various doo-dads.

Throw down some water lines and you oughta have some larger buildings start to pop up.

That said - those look like stock buildings. Old fashioned has a plugin which blocks the maxis stuff, so maybe that's gone missing somehow?

Grimey Drawer
Starting to get back into Sim City 4 pretty heavily, so I've decided to bite the bullet and throw out Old Fashioned and replace it with my own selection of plugins. So far I've got a no-RHW install of the latest NAM, SPAM, the usual fixes, Road Top Mass Transit, something that tweaks sidewalks, and that PEG Park pack. What I'm trying to go for is a fast loading, uncluttered, almost vanilla play experience with just a few systems tweaks and some odds and ends to make it look pretty and fix pet peeves. It would be nice to add some more variety to my growables however.

So my question is to anyone who knows what's inside the jumbled mess of Old Fashioned 3.0, are there any folders or .dats that I can just yank out of there and plop into my own that will add a bunch of growable variety at once without lengthening my menus or load times? Barring that, is there some folder or .dat that has a bunch of the common dependencies that I can throw in there?

Or would I just be better off downloading any custom growable buildings manually? If so, are there any recommended creators that have created packs of their stuff?
