Ah, yeah totally didn't interpret the icon as circles. I only just encountered the guy and it was hard to tell what was going on inside the tower, was trying to get my pawns to follow me out of the tower but I died first.

You can use the Egression skill and it will usually let you escape out of it before he caves your head in. But without it, it is pretty much impossible. When I did BBI, I ran with Egression simply because I was afraid I was going to break my stick from rotating so fast.

I think it is a horrible mechanic that develops need to drop.

It's not bad in this case. Would you rather the grabs always result in you losing a ton of hp? This gives you a second chance to avoid it if you hosed up, while still keeping the attack dangerous.

Considering that it usually is a death sentence unless I have egression, it really wouldn't matter. I don't think I have ever escaped from a condemned gorecyclops or eliminator's grab without that augment.

I've escaped from the Condemned Corecyclops' grab. On the other hand, the pad on top of my controller's analog stick is now loose so

Those aren't the only grabs, anyway.

Yeah, I know, but they are some of the hardest. Right now, my strategy is to not even deal with them most of the time. Its usually a lot of work for little pay off.

Wait, what, really? I bumped into the Ur-Dragon accidentally when I found its riftstone but ran away because I figured I was too low-levelled. Is it ALWAYS an unwinnable fight?

Technically it's not unwinnable.

Online Ur-Dragon is just so loving strong at this point that you basically need to luck into it being almost dead already to get the kill.

Genocyber
Jun 4, 2012

Yeah at this point the online Ur-Dragon probably has billions of HP. The way it works is that when you enter his room you're given a copy of the Ur-Dragon. How much health it has depends on how much health other players have defeated. You'll do damage to it until it runs away, then that damage will be uploaded to the server. Eventually players combined will do enough damage to activate the grace period, where he will be nearly dead and you just need to break a few glowing hearts (which still requires being min/maxed and chugging periapts). The problem is that he grows stronger each generation, and he scales up a bit too much. Offline Ur-Dragon is a lot more fun, these days.

I AM THE ONLY ONE IN THIS GAME WHO GETS LAID
Now that my pawn is starting to get kitted out in BBI gear and is running around lv130, I figure I should probably pay attention to inclinations. For a Sorc, what would the desired combination be? Challenger/Utilitarian/Medicant or would Utilitarian be better first (Medicant there in third so I can swap to Mage if someone wants it)?

Utilitarian, Scather, and Challenger are the only good inclinations. The rest are a waste of space.

Hey, at some point upthread someone wrote a really useful post about how to grab a ring that doubles your gained discipline somewhere in BBI as a super low level. Does anyone have that or remember what page it was on? I'm starting a new game (because amazing character customization will be the death of me) and that ring is sounding really useful for the early game.

I assume you meant this one?

Magus42 posted:

I wasn't able to find anything more detailed than Genocyber's info, but the DD wiki has great maps.

Starting from Bitterblack Isle, head to Garden of Ignominy, then Duskmoon Tower.

Go downstairs and to the east into the Ward of Regret and make your way to Midnight Helix.

This is the hardest part, IMO - you've got to make it up to the top of the tower while dodging Gargoyles and fireballs. I seemed to get lucky and the Gargoyles didn't bother me except when I was on the side platforms, but keep an eye out. At the top is the Void Key.

Go back to Duskmoon Tower, and the north door downstairs can now be opened w/the key. This leads to Vault of Defiled Truth.

Sprint through there to the Gutter of Misery, then to Warrior's Respite.

In there you'll find the Moonbeam Gem, which you need for the door to the ring's chest.

Grab it, head back to Duskmoon Tower, head downstairs yet again, and the door you want to open is this one.

Is there a way that you can make whoever you're escorting wait somewhere? I sank over 100 hours into this game on my first file (which got deleted after my PS3 broke) and eventually was just OP enough to never give enemies a chance to do damage to the escort. I finally started a new game a couple days ago and am playing through that escort mission that's available at the inn in Gran Soren when you first get there. I just slaughtered the women thieves who were living inside that waycastle with the close gate, and I remember that there's gonna be a chimera waiting for me not too far past the other side.

Level 33 maybe?! ;)

Well I've been fighting the chimera and getting it down to practically no health, which seems to send it into a blind rage which it directs towards the retarded man that I am escorting, who enjoys walking in between its legs whenever it attacks.

I guess there's no way to get people to wait somewhere?

Try just running past the chimera, just seriously haul rear end past it along the roads or into the woods or wheverever, eat mushrooms or whatever stamina refreshing things you have if necessary. Your pawns and whoever you're escorting will teleport to your side after a bit; sooner or later you'll get out of aggro range of the monster and you can carry on with the escort.

And then return to beat the poo poo out of whatever monster it was that was messing the whole thing up. :black101:

Did this yesterday. I ran past everything, it was still terrifying, and my pawn still died a couple times. Some of those enemies I saw... :gonk:.

However, the ring rules pretty hard and got some nice items from the trip. It was a good choice.

Just run around it. Seriously, just go into the woods a little and you should be fine. You don't have to stick to the road.

Hey, what would be the best inclinations for a Warrior pawn that I want to act as a meat-shield/aggro-machine for my squishy main character? I also don't want them to waste all the healing items I give them.

I know you can set their inclinations with potions, but I'm not sure which would work as their primary/secondary/tertiary.

Aside from getting Sinew as one of your pawn's augments, you can also dump all your materials and key/quest items onto your pawn (just be careful about the pawn dying because then your quest items go to the inn), and you keep the curatives and such on you. You should also get Sinew, and maybe Leg Strength if you want. Sinew doesn't take much time/effort to pick up and it is super useful for running around.

Scather/Challenger is how my warrior pawn is set up, and I have rarely seen her use healing potions ( I usually run with a mage though so she might just be smart enough to wait for the mage to heal) she will use curatives whenever she gets a debilitation if she has the correct item.

edit: is the fortune augment worth putting on yourself/pawn? does it increase crystals that much?

I remember putting Bolide on my pawn for the first time and forgetting about it, then in the middle of a big fight these big loving meteors from the heavens rain down and I panicked, thinking it was a boss ability. Then I realized they were on our side and I giggled. I actually giggled. A/V'wise, they really did the high-tier sorc spells well.

I bought Dragon's Dogma when it first came out. I played to the point where I was able to create a pawn (and ended up spending FAR too much time creating my character and my pawn). I was thinking of sitting down and starting over and actually playing this game. Should I just start playing with the base game or should I wait until I can buy Dark Arisen?

How far into the game does the Dark Arisen stuff start? Will I have a better experience if I go from the start with Dark Arisen or will it not matter until 10+ hours into the game?

You can go to Dark Arisen pretty much from the get go, but if you haven't played the game, you're probably going to die a lot if you go straight to the DLC content. You should play the base game first.

Dark Arisen is an expansion with the full game, and it adds a lot of ease of access sorts of things, so you might want to go ahead and buy Dark Arisen, anyways. The main things are the portcrystals you can pick up throughout the maingame, which will make traveling a lot more convenient. And if you have a save file (any save file), you can get an infinite ferry stone for teleporting to those port crystals.

some ghoulish parody of humanity
I just started playing Dragon's Dogma right before Christmas, got it in the Instant Game Collection from PS+ when I took that recently. So far I'm having a blast. It's really addictive. The first time I played it, I thought it sucked, but I have it another chance and it's awesome.

If anyone wants to hire my pawn, his name is Griz (PS3). He's a sorcerer now (started as a fighter) but will probably be a warrior soon.

At around lvl20 I tried BBI and surprisingly was able to kill some wolves and goblins at the start, but I gave up when I met a huge wraith or something (Death?) which dissapeared after killing my healer. I'm now around 35 and am planning on trying some more BBI, or is that not advisable? In vanilla I just met with the duke and have been given two tasks by his chamberlain. How far along in the vanilla main quest line am I? At what point can I start thinking about trying my luck on the Ur-Dragon and where do I find him?
