Ah, nice to hear I'm not the only one. I don't have much interest in gunpla, but I lurk for the occasional painting discussion because, like you said, it's much more relevant to GK than minis or military vehicles.

GK can veer into :nws: territory though. Or at least they have the potential that plastic robots don't.

I'd like to keep discussion to more manchild-y things like robots and superheroes and monsters, allowing us to avoid issues like "clothing optional" statues and garage kits. It's easier that way.

And WAY less creepy.

I pretty much exclusively build mg's with the occasional Rg. What in particular are you worried about messing up? If you make a mistake in painting, you can always strip the paint (I use acrylic so windex strips it off). The thing is though, once you paint you have to commit to it, especially if you use primer. I highly recommend painting a kit, I've found it actually saved me money on gunpla kits since it takes me longer to finish one, so I'm not burning through kits so quickly. It also makes them look much better.

The main thing I'm worried about messing up is in panel lining, since from what I understand, my usual standby of covering the whole line with a fair amount of ink and then wiping off the excess with a q-tip doesn't work on a painted kit, and screwing up a panel line means having to strip the paint and repaint the whole thing. Given my unstable hands, it just seems like I'd never manage to get it right.

It works, if you let the coat underneath dry, or you use a paint that uses a different solvent.

You may as well link the /toy/ guide, it covers recommended equipment pretty well. And it has basic painting tips. Man we really need to update that.

In other news, Gentei Kits is reporting that their parts service will be coming back up soon. This seems to fit with Tatsu Hobby's upcoming service, so whatever Bandai was doing they've seemed to have stopped now.

And in case anybody even cares anymore, progress report on 00 grunt:

Red parts have been repainted dark gray. The Future tinting was a disaster; gonna have to clean it off and try again with some actual food coloring. In hindsight mixing Future and unthinned Tamiya clear green probably wasn't a good idea. :downs:

Gotta say I love everything aboutt his kit except the way the GN drive is situated. I know there is only so much you can do but it would help the look a lot if the drive was more flush to the back of the model It makes it seem way too deep from front to back as it is. Then again this is a problem with the 00 Raiser in general, I'm just picky, what do I know.

I know this is just a joke, but honestly in the new thread? Go hog wild, but we'll be making fun of you for it. Besides, unfortunately it looks like the parts and accessories from AGP are compatible with Robot Damashii. Bandai knows how to get that brand synergy going, that's for sure.

Seriously, though, I'm not above allowing discussion of toys like SH Figuarts, Figmas, Revoltech, Playarts etc., and those lines do include "girl figures" from the likes of Sailor Moon and PreCure. They were even within the scope of this thread when I made it. It's the toy and model kit thread. I don't care. Creepy porn figures, statues, and resin/garage kits though? Yeah, that's right out.

The Kotobukiya option parts are as compatible with anything as far as kitbashing is concerned, but they're specifically made for their Frame Arms line. Basically, think snap-together kits with original designs based around a standardized plastic robot frame. What you're seeing in the MSG promo pics is that frame. You can buy the frame separately or just buy one of the Frame Arms kits which include it (basically, all of them).

The GN drive is actually on a hinge, I can position it any way I want. It's a holdover from how the 0 Raiser connects to the 00.

As you can see here. Normally the 0 Raiser is pointing straight down when it's docked with the 00, but I can just lift it up if I want.

This only happens if you use the exact same kind of paint for both the paint job and the panel line. Just mix and match and you'll be fine.

Also Tamiya is super overpriced. And sometimes not even that good. Don't worry about if your stuff is low quality anyways; the poor craftsman blames his tools and all that.

BlitzBlast, if you want to work on some writeups, go for it. I think I'm gonna go ahead and write the new thread since I've got all the time in the world this week, but I'd love to get some contributions from the thread regulars and include them in the OP or the first couple posts. This goes out to anyone, really. I've got PM's, but if you're comfortable with just posting in this thread, that's cool too.

Speaking of things I'm going to need to work on: New pictures for the thread. As much as Dalong's photos rule, I'm basically using them without permission. Should I go for boxart (I'd hate to do that), promotional pictures (doesn't really give you an idea of the unfinished product), personal collection pictures from thread contributors (will vary in quality), or just suck it up and keep doing what we've been doing?

Am considering a Gelgoog kit to do an Ace Custom with. Are there any third party alternative parts out there, perhaps on HLJ but named so they don't come up on searching "Gelgogg". I kind of dislike the normal round hatch in the stomach, at least just there on the flat surface. The HG of Cima's unit looks better with more details there, and I think I've seen MGs with a different chest.

Unfortunately, the kit of Cima's is based an alternate design that isn't found in the MG line. The MG ones are based on the original Gelgoog design by Okawara, instead of the Gelgoog Marine which is by a different designer.

And yeah, I'm hoping this is the year I finally finish a kit too. Not just bang one together in a weekend and throw it on the shelf either (I'm the guy who doesn't even panel line). I mean every step from washing the sprues to detailing and final topcoat.

Though I'm imagining that I'll probably end up frustrated due to my inexperience and lack of patience by the end of it and just go back to buying pre-painted action figures again like the last couple projects. But I'm trying to stay positive, dammit.

Also, Bimmi, I think I remember reading something about that too. Figured they'd do something for the Gundam 35th anniversary.

I'm like you - I start snapping with the intent of "OK this time I'm going to do it ALL and it will be the BEST EVER" then see what someone way better than me did and get despondent and say "gently caress it, MGs look pretty good snapped" and don't decal or panel line. With the Unicorn I'm going in with the deliberate knowledge that it won't look as good as the awesome ones I've seen, but dammit it's mine.

I also find I have to get myself in the right mood to paint; the hours of prep and setup before I even start spraying are really easy to get distracted from and at least 6 days over the holidays I started working, then looked up and saw it was after midnight and I hadn't even hooked the airbrush up yet. When I do get it all ready and get started early enough I get in the zone and spray for hours. I need to figure out how to keep focused when I'm preparing to paint.
