Were you doubling up on the bonuses or something? Its pretty hard to drop $100 in half an hour playing at a $10 Pai-Gow table.

I meant to say an hour. Not proofreading was dumb on my part. And no bonuses, just an honest streak of losing constantly. Hands were fast and there was only ever a couple of other people at the table.

It was bad.

But stupid fun.

___ days until the 2010 trade deadline :(
Does anyone have activity recommendations for this Friday night? Just me and a buddy going on a last second trip. Don't think we are necessarily looking for one of the top line clubs (got XS out of my system last time), but a cool bar to post up and potentially get weird in would be nice to know.

Saturday will be all day in a sports book, then Penn and Teller or Absinthe, and then wherever our heart takes us.

I haven't played at TI for years but most tables on the strip start at $10 but you can find $5 tables if you look hard enough.

$10 is a stretch on weekends and holidays. You're looking at $15 minimum. Probably more like $25.

Albeit in May, I had a blast sitting at the $5 blackjack table doing table minimums for hours and hours with a bunch of people at the Fremont.

What are the poker limits for cash games on the strip?

Radiohead71

I play only no limit cash games anymore. Last time I went I played 2-5 no limit. Buyins are 200-500 I think. You should be able to play 1-2 NL for 100-300. Limit games are less buy-in intensive. $3-6 limit you can buy in for 100 or so. I played at Bellagio BTW. People also like MGM's poker room but I have never been there.

Anyone got recommendations for places to rent cars to drive really goddamn fast? This kinda thing looks like something I would kinda enjoy burning a little cash on: http://www.exoticsracing.com/

Personal experiences? Ways to get the prices down/know of any good values on that sorta thing?

I rented a car for my boyfriend from Vegas Luxury Rides and he loved it. We didn't do any racing obviously, but I figured 24 hours going 70 was better (and cheaper) than 30 minutes going 150. Their service was really great too, I would recommend them in a heartbeat.

What are some of the better "nature-y" things to do around Vegas?

I'm going in July and one of the things we will be doing is a motorcart ride out to Red Rock Canyon in a scootercar. The entire tour is 5 hours roundtrip and includes limited hiking and some scenic stops. I'm pretty stoked about it.

Are there any other national parks, hiking, rock formations, etc to see in the Mojave? Any small, dusty towns reminiscent of Fallout: New Vegas?

Haha, so there is. The small, dusty towns part sounded better in my head; my buddies would leave me behind if I were to drag them out there. I'm narrowing my search down to nature poo poo to do that's within an hour drive of Vegas. So far I've turned up Valley of Fire State park, Hoover drat/Boulder City, checking out Lake Mead for any cliff jumping spots.

Yeah Hoover drat didn't come up in my head as a nature-like thing (unless it was a conspiracy of Illuminati beavers :tinfoil: ) but I did that on my last trip and it's awesome.

Be sure to take a walk on the Pat Tillman bridge. It might be a bit much if you get anxious around heights but I had a great time.

Valley of fire is really cool, especially magic hour in the late afternoon/evening. Drive west out of there at sunset for a memorable drive.

Hoover dam is rad, but you have to take the dam tour where you go down inside the thing.

Suave Fedora

The thing about Valley of Fire that I had in my mind was to go there early morning/midday to hike around White Dome and check out the pictographs, then head over in the early PM to somewhere along Lake Mead for a swim. I'm totally half-assing this, but I think I spotted a location where we just have to walk 2k feet to the water's edge:

http://goo.gl/maps/m4qwW (Destination D would be the last section of paved road)

Of course we can do the trip counter-clockwise instead and get the magical mystery ending.

Seconding Valley of Fire. The drive along Northshore Rd. is pretty good too. You pass through a whole bunch of different looking formations in rapid succession.

I'm going to be in Vegas this Friday-Tuesday (back at the Nugget too! :toot:) and had a question about watching sports. On Sunday I'd like to bet on and watch two college basketball games: Illinois at Northwestern (4:30 PM Vegas time on Big Ten Network) and Maryland at Florida State (5:00 PM on ESPNU). The second NFL playoff game that day should be finishing up around 5:15 PM or so, i.e. overlapping with the basketball games. Are the sportsbooks jampacked for NFL Divisional games, or will we be able to find seats/screens if we show up around 4:00 PM? Is it a safer play to try to find a bar instead of a book? Or do I have to stake out a seat all day to hang on through the NFL games (in which case, I'll bet but won't watch)?

Basically, how crazy are things for NFL playoffs?

Going for the first time with my best friend for a girl's getaway from January 30 to Feb 2 - staying at the Venetian (really excited to live in the lap of luxury). Two questions for those knowledgeable about the city:

1 - What is the best shooting range that is somewhat affordable?
2 - Since our plane leaves at 11:45 pm local time on the 2nd, we are hoping to catch the Super Bowl before we go to the airport. Any recommendations on sports bars or restaurants to go to?

Definitely. I ride a 500 lb Scrambler, so it's not exactly a dirt bike, but there are some fun trails around that I manage when I'm feeling impractical.

Hmmm. This is a tough call. I do want the thrill of hitting an absurd top speed though, and in a rental on the highway I'd really be risking death, arrest, and all manner of other bad things. But it would feel kinda cool driving it around the outskirts of Vegas in the desert beauty around there...

Maybe go do a few laps in that R8 if I scrape together some spare cash between now and then, and if we win big on day 1, rent one for just cruising around town.

Thanks, looks like if I do do this, it will definitely include VoF.

Here's what I put together:

1) Rent a car in Vegas, head east on I-15 into the Mojave. Right on Valley of Fire Highway. Drive to Atlatl Rock (Valley of Fire State Park). Brief walk around to view petroglyphs.
2) Continue onto White Dome (still VoF). A longer hike (1 mile) around White Mound and view more petroglyphs.
3) Continue down VoF Highway and turn south on Northshore Rd. Drive down to Stewarts Point. Park car; hike .4 mile to water's edge, take a dip in slightly-radioactive Lake Mead.
4) Head back along Lake Mead's northshore road on our way back.
5a*) (Scenic?) Take Lake Mead Blvd back into Vegas
5b*) (not as scenic?) Take Northshore Rd/West Lake Mead Parkway back into Vegas

Questions:
- Does anyone know anything about Stewarts Point that I should know about? Good place to swim/bad place to swim? I'm not looking to lounge about, just a spot to get wet and do some swimming. We're a pretty active bunch and can handle minimal climbing in and out of the water.
- Is 5a more scenic than 5b? On Googlemaps it looks like it goes through more interesting topography.

Total round trip without stopping is 150 miles, 3.5 hours. Including stops and unexpected surprises, I'm liberally putting the entire trip at 7 hours. We would be bringing our own food for lunch and snacks.

Okay folks,

My trip is still 9 months away but I'm excited and I think it's fun planing it.

Anyways on my last trip, we didn't get to a lot of casinos (to look/ogle at).

Is it safe to say I skip the following casinos for lack of "attractions"?
-Tropicana
-Bally's
-Riviera
-TI
-Harrah's
-Monte Carlo

Also, how is Zarkana? (I'm staying at the Aria for 3 nights). Or should I skip it? I liked Ka' for what that's worth.

Also, does anyone have any grand canyon tips? I'm planning on doing the drive down, staying the night and driving back.

Ask me how to run a good team into the ground.
Bally's, Harrah's, Monte Carlo and (to a lesser extent) TI all have some of the cheaper gambling on the strip if that matters to you. Havaing said that, none of them have any real "attractions" to it, though cheap gambling and rooms are an attraction for me personally. I guess there's the Sirens of TI free show but I've never seen it and it's supposedly really lame. There's a small shopping area in Monte Carlo, on the way to Aria, but it's nothing special.

I've never been to Riviera in my 7-8 visits and I haven't lost any sleep over that. The Tropicana has been remodeled apparently but I'm not sure if there's anything worth seeing there. It sucked before the remodel and I haven't seen it since.

Monte Carlo has a beer pub in it where they have their own brews. They aren't anything extraordinary, but if you are near it I'd recommend it if you like beer.

TI has a horribly awkward pirate with sirens sore that is free to watch outside the casino. I can't stress how bad it is, but if you've had a couple of drinks and want to laugh, it might be worth your time.

Tropicana did a recentish remodel, but it wasn't anything special. I don't recall anything particularly noteworthy about the others you listed either.

There's something painful about Treasure Island. I'm not sure if it's the color palette or the lighting or something else, but it just gives me a headache every time I walk in. I'm not too snobby for the more seedy spots in Vegas or anything, but there's something about TI that grates on my brain in a wrong, horrible way that I just can't put my finger on.

From my experience most of the Overton arm of the lake is choked with tamarask, so I'm not sure a walk to the shore would be very pleasant. And there's some sketchy desert rats up there sometimes, as well as occasional issues with feral cows. To swim I think your best bet would just be to stop at Boulder beach or something. Roger's Spring is also pretty cool, it's up by the turn off to Stewart's Point. The CCC dug out the spring and built like a little pond for it, it's a good place for lunch.

There's some really awesome hotsprings along the river below Hoover dam, but since you're going in the summer the only reasonable way to get to them would be to rent kayaks from Willow Beach and paddle up to them.

Excellent, this is exactly the information i need to know. I had to look up tamarisk but I understand that it is a non-native, invasive shrub.

Feral cows? poo poo man, I am ALL over that.

Is Rogers Spring = Rogers Wash on google maps? I saw a pond with some buildings around it just west of Northshore Rd. Boulder Beach looks like a nice option too. Why is kayaking over to the hot springs the thing to do during summer? Just curious why you specified that mode of transportation. Are they like pumping directly into the Colorado? Sorry, I'm from Florida, south to boot. All we got are oceans and Everglades.

I made the decision not too long ago to add a day to my vacation in order to do this, so I'll have an entire day to gently caress around. If you've got any more cool ideas, lemme know. Thanks!

Yeah, tamarisk is invasive in more ways than one...basically it's individual stalks that poke you in awkward places and get caught on your clothes and whip you in the face when you walk through it. Boulder Beach is really laid back, you can hang out with beers and stuff, and maybe hit the brewery or something in Boulder City after.

Rogers Spring flows into Rogers Wash, but there's like shaded picnic tables and trash cans and stuff which makes it a good stop between VoF and Boulder City.

I recommend kayaking to hotsprings in the summer because if you try to hike to them in the summer you might die. They are in smaller canyons which feed into Black Canyon and the Colorado River, and a lot of them have been sandbagged up to create really nice pools. Unfortunately, Willow Beach is a pretty good drive from the northern part of the park, so you'd prolly have to choose either VoF or hotsprings for a single day.

Basically there's a ton of outdoors stuff to do at Lake Mead and around Vegas, but it's best in Fall/Winter so I guess it's just an excuse to make the trip again another time
