I guess it only makes sense for the white-is-black, up-is-down world of Freep to declare that one of the most physically demanding sports is actually for pansies.

Normally I just lurk the Freep thread but this one quote blows my mind. 1) Are they blaming the government for it being loving cold? 2) Why can't they get to work in the freezing cold? 3) They're complaining about not being able to pay for their kids to see doctors but rail against Obamacare or a single payer option? 4) If they can't afford medical treatment they must be eligible for some sort of subsidy under the ACA wouldn't they? Also, clearly their employer doesn't provide health benefits, otherwise they wouldn't have lost them (unless their employer was a massive dickbag who canceled stuff due to Obamacare). Like they seem angry at the government for things that either they should be angry at other people for (employer for not providing health care) or they're angry about not having access to things they fought against (ACA/Single Payer healthcare). Also they're angry that Obama made it loving cold. I realize that's Freep in a nutshell, but it's amazing to be like "I can't afford health care!" and simultaneously fight the government who tried to give it to you. [/quote] They don't deserve it is why. If they had been a better worker, or a better person, or a better Christian, they would be wealthy, healthy and comfortable; however, never despair, for if they buckle down, straighten up and really put their nose to the grind stone, they can still achieve wealth and status. Most Republican voters constantly vote against their own interests like this. All the poor, uneducated rural whites and the like. They either don't care or have fantasy reasons as to why its A-Ok.

Can you imagine being the kid of one of Freepers who didn't show much interest or talent in any of "American" sports? The sheer amount of emotional abuse they must experience. You're just a kid, and your dad thinks you're a worthless cowardly wimp.

Hahahahaha, that soccer thread is great. quote:ACL injuries are epidemic among girls in high school and college, particularly among those playing soccer and basketball. Their bodies are just not made for those explosive cuts and moves. Go to any school and you will see several girls hobbling around on crutches. I suppose he thinks the ladies with torn ACLs that aren't from sports-related injuries come from standing around in the kitchen too much?

Much like race, Freep can only tell how 'manly' a sport is by how stacked its players look. American Football (God's Own Game ) is packed with dudes who look like walking houses. Baseball ('murica) has lots of dudes with very strong upper bodies. Hockey () is one of the good ones. Soccer though? That's just a bunch of really skinny dudes running around a pitch for how long again? This, however, has given me the excuse to look up the myriad of Zidane gifs that came out after the World Cup.

I was surprised to see a couple of (relatively) accurate posts in that soccer thread.quote:Soccer flourishes because it is inexpensive to play. This is actually fairly true I've heard, since soccer doesn't really require more than a ball it's easily played almost anywhere. This I think is part of the reason why there was an outcry against instant replay being implemented in soccer. I mean I realize his point was "Soccer is only popular because those poor countries can't afford better sports" but still. quote:However, the low scoring we hear about in soccer - a 3 to 2 soccer match is not much different than a 21 to 14 football game. Still just 5 scores in the game. This is also slightly accurate, though there's more ways to score in football than just a touchdown, and even a touchdown has two parts to the score, but if touchdowns weren't worth six points then you'd have 3-2 football games as well. And then there's baseball which depending on how the fielders play can also have really low-scoring games, but I don't hear Freepers complaining about that. However... quote:Football is, if anything, more popular now that it was back then and Soccer's popularity (or lack thereof) is virtually unchanged. Well, I guess he's partially right, soccer's popularity as the world's most popular sport is virtually unchanged.

America's obsession with "manly" sports results in 6th graders playing through concussions and at least one highschooler/college player a year dying of dehydration because if they're not literally near death in practice they obviously don't want it bad enough. The NFL might be the most brutal because of the size and speed involved but its plain sadistic to watch a 5' tall kid be screamed at to run head first into someone twice his size for the glory of a last place junior high school. Also I'm loving the irony of freepers mocking the athleticism of soccer while also mentioning that baseball exists.

I remember being ran until I blew chunks in middle school football. Then got told "way to hustle." Thankfully that ended in HS where the coach was a real health professional. That guy got pissed if we weren't downing water at like every available moment when it was hot.

American Football? You mean that sport where you all wear armour and stop every 10 seconds? Where an average game sees all of 20 minutes of actual play? These guys must frickin love Rugby then. No armour, dudes are stacked and literally wrestle the ball off each other.

The Stanley Cup is the big thing for the dirty Canadians, not us freedom loving Americans. Also you're missing out on the biggest offender, the so called World Series, a championship tournament that routinely features teams from a single country. Though that's more of an indictment against all the countries outside of America, Latin America and Japan that have failed to realize the splendor that is the sport of baseball. edit: Ocrassus posted:American Football? Baseball's really the best sport. Takes a bit of learning to get into but drat if that sport doesn't have it all. Terrible collisions, statistics, dingers, balls flying at 95-100mph, The Cubs... you name it! Even some Freepers were saying that. Guess what? They're right.

Rugby machismo is also funny when you consider that football players didn't wear pads either until so many players starting dropping dead on the field that Teddy Roosevelt threatened to ban it, and that was before modern strength and conditioning managed to put 330 pound players on the field.

Here in LA where you have a significant Latin American community soccer has plenty of diehard fans. Hell, I'm not sure I'd be so ready to discount even your average American. Enough people watched the World Cup in South Africa for vuvuzela jokes to be a thing for a while.
