Last year they started out fast and wore down as they lost translators, who are the fastest to burn out. Even best case you're most likely looking to March or so for the whole thing unless all their translators and typesetters stay active.

Wow, they started out fast this year. Endo's family embarrassing him at the start(arguably my new favorite tradition) and then forcing Yamasaki to put the beetle on his nose by calling him out as a rakugoka. Also, yea, minus some some grammatical errors and a few odd typesetting errors the sub was extremely well done and sets a good standard that hopefully lasts the length of the batsu.

Just discovered this today: TOKIO tries to find different realistic-looking objects, that are actually made of chocolate in a room. It isn't subbed, but gets the image across easily. It is also home to one of the best gifs I've seen in a while. What "worries" me the most (if you wanna call it worrying) is that the little snippet on their page says one of their translators wants to sub this in German too. I'm German myself and all but I'm sure there is gonna be enough burnout and most definitely enough work to get everything subbed and done in English, so double dipping right from the start seems like a recipe for disaster to me.

Non-English subs usually appear far after others unless the person is specifically trying to sub it in that language from the start. I doubt very much he's doing both of these at once and there's no way the whole team is doing both.

Yep, it's all about the translators. If you have 5+ active ones like they seem to this year then it's a breeze. If you're down to 1 or 2 guys then it starts to lag.

Yea I'm going to toss them a note with some things. The slang and idioms are just a general rule of thumb for translating, well, anything because none of that stuff carries well across almost any languages, especially not ones so vastly different like English and Japanese. That's just a thing I think translators have to learn as they go because you're likely just hardwired to spin it back the way you're used to thinking in your own language. Also someone pointed out they totally missed Matsumoto's drawers and didn't translate it or didn't edit the video right to show it. That part had me scratching my head at the start of part 3.

I'm not sure it is and I bet a good percentage of people watching the translations are unaware of what that means or at least had to piece it together from context. The issue with idioms and slang is obvious but talking specifically about this sub team they have translators from multiple countries and do we really need 3 different languages' idioms and sayings in the subs much less 1?

Everyone knows that rule of thumb number one for translators is to avoid putting things into words that make sense and match their target language's way of thinking. What is this amateur hour? That's why you keep it basic and don't make it more complex than it needs to be for the sake of making someone say "hey, I recognize that phrase, this translation makes me feel warm and comfy and reminds me of home". It's a pretty well used phrase in the former British colonies, such as Australia, New Zealand and South Africa. That map doesn't at all prove a point one way or another, but the European Union use British English as their reference for translations of official documentation so it would be safer to assume that British English is more widely known, taught and used in Europe than American English, but easy access to American television is probably going to help even that playing field out. It's not unlikely that when teaching English to children in Europe, British television shows are used to help people understand and these will almost definitely contain slang and other idioms. Way I see it, if some weird rear end Japanese TV show teaches you things about other cultures as well as Japanese culture, even if it's as insignificant as figuring out what taking the piss means, it's pretty cool. There's plenty of times I see things American translations too and wonder what the hell you're going on about. Like when you call things a patsy, we generally don't use that word at all.

That's a fair point, although I'd hope that second-language learners would try to be familiar with at least one of the major branches of the language they are learning. Half the fun of a new language is all the cool slang you can encounter. Idioms and slang are just as much part of a language as any other. Anyway, that post of mine was stupidly antagonistic for failed comedic purposes. My poorly articulated point was trying to say that one translation doesn't have to be watered down to target every possible viewer, and it's okay to stick to one dialect if that's what the translators are comfortable with.
