I've heard good things about Bay Trail Atoms, to the point where you should probably forget everything you've heard about Atom processors.

Except, well... this is Clover Trail.

So at best the answer to your question is going to be 'barely' is what I'm guessing.

I think when nolen said sketching he really meant just sketching. Besides, like he said, it's rumored to be in the $300 range.

According to the specs the screen is a decent 11.6" rather than 8".

I have an 8" Bay Trail tablet; it's capable of running Photoshop, but the main issue is button size on the UI. There's a massive gulf in the design of apps and programs, and I definitely wouldn't recommend a tablet that small for any kind of productivity.

That said, there's a free program called MyPaint with a very minimalist interface (it's hidden entirely by default in full screen) and if you have a proper digitizer then an 8" screen is absolutely fine for sketching on. Tablets at that size are small enough to hold comfortably in one hand, while Bay Trail is nippy enough to not result in any slowdown (although I haven't done anything complex enough to really test it in that regard). I wouldn't buy one just for sketching, but with a digitizer it's definitely something you can do.

Thought I'd share for those who want a tablet, the Surface Pro got marked down to $600: http://www.microsoftstore.com/store/msusa/en_US/pdp/Surface-Pro/productID.275287300?Icid=Homepage_WhatsNew_3_Surface_Pro_010613

The trade off being less battery life and only one kickstand angle, but considering the Pro 2 is 400+ more and you can get a case that'll let you use multiple viewing angles, it looks like a decent deal.

It does look like a pretty good deal. You forgot to mention the Surface 2 pro has more battery life because it is a Haswell (4th gen) CPU. Surface 2 Pro would also be more powerful and run a little cooler.

Hey I just wanted to pop in and ask a question. I've never used any kind of digital tablet as I could never get the "hand down here, eyes up here" coordination, and later when the Cintiqs came out, the price was astronomical to just blindly buy. Nonetheless, the past month I discovered ProCreate on the iPad, and have been loving delighted, so I was thinking about a Cintiq a bit more seriously. Fortunately it turned out that a friend of mine has one in her studio and so I was able to play around with it. What surprised me was how loving SLOW the action was. I'm talking about *here is the tip of my stylus* X         _____________ *here comes the line that I drew trailing behind*; and using it for painting was even slower. My question is this: does the speed of the Cintiq depend on the computer that it is tethered to? If I put it on a high-end PC would that lag be diminished, or is this an inherent trait of the Cintiq pad in general?

Edit: I also purchased the Hex3 Jaja stylus for use with ProCreate and god drat I'm in love with the combination.

What program did you use it in? The current version of Photoshop is slow as hell, but it works fine in Artrage and Mischief. There's a little lag, but nothing compared to what it was doing in photoshop. I'm cheap, so those are the two programs I've used it in, aside from an obsolete version of photoshop that also doesn't lag. I would love to have procreate for pc, since I loving love it.

I believe it was Sketchbook Pro.

If that lag was really bad they may have had stroke correction/Lazy Mouse turned way up. There's usually a slight disconnect between the pen and actual stroke due to input lag and the thickness of the glass that drives some people away from using them, but it shouldn't be that bad.

I have a cintiq 24HD and use it with Photoshop CS5 on a decent PC (i5, 8gb ram, can't remember graphics card - was mid-high-end a couple of years ago) and don't notice any lag at all. Only if I am using a big, fancy brush on a large canvas - and that is my PC chugging, not input lag. The only weirdness I experience is if the pen isn't calibrated right and the cursor sits away from the pen tip at certain angles. That said, I work pretty fast and I don't think I watch the lines as they come out. I'll pay more attention next time I'm working at it and let you know.

The only time I used a cintiq the input lag was not insane but it was bad enough that I couldn't stand using it. It was in photoshop cs5 and it was on a crazy 3d modeling workstation so it definitely wasn't the PC's fault. I wonder if the other brands of tablet monitors suffer from it equally. Also yeah the actual cursor was like a millimeter away from where the stylus was.

The Bamboo driver now has the "use Windows Ink" toggle option like the Intuos driver does! Driver version 5.3.3-2 and up has the new toggle in the Wacom settings program.

Screenshot from an older version of the driver as I haven't installed the new version on my home machine yet, but that's where the toggle is in the new version.

You can get the latest driver from http://us.wacom.com/en/support/drivers as usual.

That's what I was thinking of. Ideally I think you'd be able to clip it either forward to work with your thumb or backward to work with your fingers. I really want to find the time to make some prototypes of my own as a precursor to building my own keyboard.

So, I need a new laptop, and as I do a lot of my sketching in my sketchbook on the go, I'm really leaning towards a surface pro. The look pretty nice and I poked at one for a bit, and I've heard good reviews of them for drawing. I poked at one for a little (but they didn't have the pen at the demo), but is there anything I should know before I go for it?

I don't remember if I've posted this or not, but I just use an external, bluetooth 10-key (numpad) and Autohotkey for shortcuts. It works perfectly and you can even chain shortcuts to make actions (like my 1-keypress ctrl-z, for example).

I did get one for drawing, but I ended up returning it (and all of the bs Microsoft has given me in doing so is enough reason to not get one; it's been nearly two months and they still haven't given me a refund).

For drawing, you'd think it'd be awesome, but the pen calibration is way too off in some programs. Manga studio was fine, but any adobe suite products, it was just a mess. Even after installing the right drivers, sometimes the pen worked fine, sometimes is cursor could be halfway across the screen away from the pen. Also all of the buttons and options being so small was a problem after a while. I found using my intuos 3 much more comfortable, and I didn't have to worry about scratching my screen. I also bought it thinking I could use it for general surfing, writing, etc., but it just wasn't for me, I didn't think the experience was what I wanted.

It wasn't absolutely horrible or anything, but it wasn't for me. I'd say to try it out (and buy it from a place with a decent return policy) and see if you like it.

So I got me one of those Monoprice tablets and it's huge and awesome and all, but I'm a bit disappointed that you can't assign specific keystrokes to the buttons on the barrel. I'd gotten used to having them increase/decrease my brush size and now I have to do that manually. Bummer.

Even later to the party, I own one and use various art programs with it, though mostly just Photoshop, Max and Zbrush. I'm not sure that I could recommend it as a replacement for a primary system, but for an on-the-go or even an away-from-the-desk situation, then yes, definitely.

Having previously owned a Samsung 7 Slate, and a Cintiq, the Surface falls short in the same ways they do when it comes to latency and cursor accuracy. There's still a little bit of lag there, and the cursor is less accurate in the corners but the pressure sensitivity is perfectly fine and you should have no problems doing whatever it is that you need to do on it. If you have any specific questions about it, I'd be more than happy to answer them for you.

If anyone can help, I'm having tablet troubles.

There's some kind of hangup between my Intuos 4 tablet and Photoshop CS6. Frequently, at the end of a stroke with the brush tool, the stroke will not register as "finished" - even though the pen is off the tablet's surface, no history state appears, and no other keys respond. Cmd-Z does nothing, other shortcuts do nothing. The brush is essentially stuck. Clicking on the tablet again releases control back to me, but this creates 2-3 history states that don't seem to have any visible action in them. This interrupts workflow constantly.

The end result is a stroke that looks like this:

(Drawn from left to right, hangup occurs, then clicking again creates the large dot. Pen pressure is on.)

The same thing happens with the eraser side of the Intuos pen, and with other tools in CS6. Drawing with a mouse does not reproduce the problem.

Has anyone ever had a problem like this?

I had a really weird effect happening with my Intuos 4 pen for a few weeks, not quite as you described, instead my pen was locked "on" and wouldn't stop providing input to the tablet, so I couldn't end the stroke. Replacing my nib fixed it- apparently it was worn down too much and I didn't realize it. This doesn't sound like the same thing and probably won't help, but who knows.

That's sort of what's happening here, but I added a new nib and nothing seems to have changed. I think it's some kind of throughput problem to CS6, because this doesn't seem to be happening with other programs.

You can turn off Windows Ink in the tablet driver settings thanks to the most recent driver release, which fixes the issues.

This is a problem with some apps that depend on Ink (Sketchbook Pro), but otherwise makes everything behave normally.

In my experience, these tend also show up if you use layer masks. Any time you use layer masks and scale/rotate that layer then 1px lines will show up at the boundaries of the layer.

I teach and students have this all the time.

I can't say for certain that this is what is happening, but maybe it will help if you do. Easiest way is to zoom in/out to different percentages when you're done and hide them in the layer mask.
