I figured you'd have to click on "search the secret world" to get game related content. but I could just look at game wiki instead. I believe the original intention was to have clothing stores in every faction hub, but they nixed it when they decided to make London more of an interfactional central zone. Instead it seems like they want to give every faction home separate reasons to turn up. While London has the clothing store and barber, New York has the entrance to the raid and the plastic surgeon. Seoul doesn't ahve anythign yet, but when they eventually add it the tattoo parlor will be there.

You have to be careful about searching for answers because there are sites that give solutions now. You want to be doing authentic research, probably, not just looking up the answers.

I've used the wiki more times than I'd like to admit for some research quests, but sometimes the clues are too obtuse. How would you know you need to kill yourself to get inside the jail in Kingsmouth...or still be dead to follow the white raven?

Yeah, Something Wicked is a good example of how nutty some of the investigations missions can get. It didn't require a masters degree in Google-Fo, but it did require the player to think outside the box and take all the mission text literally. There was a statement the guy in the cell made either in the police report or newspaper that said 'If you want to know the truth ask my ghost', so some player who is more comfortable outside the box decided to kill themselves and check his cell. Should I have spoiler tagged that? Meh, whatever.

Morse code is involved at one point and I spent about a half an hour trying to learn morse code and just said gently caress it. I think everyone has a point where they're like "alright, I'm going to hit unfair.co or the wiki". I spent a ton of time on the cipher because that just sucked me right in and I didn't want to cheat, whereas my friend cheated on that bit but loved the morse code (apparently Boy Scouts learn morse code). I also remember traveling to the actual Lighthouse for an investigation mission that only wanted me to find a picture of a Lighthouse. Did not figure that one out until someone in chat let it slip that you didn't leave to Kingsmouth for that mission. It was a painful run to that point in QL1 gear and I felt a little let down that it wasn't as clever as I though it was.

There's a thin line between 'thinking outside the box' and 'not knowing that the game mechanics are even capable of representing what you're supposed to do'.

One of my friends picked TSW up over christmas because I told him he'd like the investigation missions and everything up to the end game, and he figured out something wicked on his own. He said that it mentioned talking to a ghost, so he figured the best way to talk to a ghost was to be one and went out to let zombies beat him to death to find out so some people really do just figure this poo poo out and love the game for it. At this point, it's really one of the biggest draws the game has to it. The only one that I didn't think was very fair was The Vision, and that's mainly because you kind of had to have known where you were going to know where to go for the last part, unless you spent a lot of time exploring the map before coming across Madame Roget (which isn't very likely). Unless there's another mention of the bit of Kingsmouth town lore sitting around town that I just missed.

I hear what everyone means about finding their own personal line for when to just give up and check unfair.co or whatever. I was good about most of the research things (like, for example, the diagnoses for the Transylvania medical mysteries) but had a horrible time when it came to figuring out obtuse game mechanics things. Also, anything involving reading music, since I only learned to read bass clef. Edit: Doesn't Madame Roget just show up on the map as a questgiver?

Madame Rogêt does definitely show up on the map, although the alley that leads to her place isn't super obvious.

I stopped playing a couple of months back, about halfway through transylvania, but I just picked the game up again because of how fun the investigations are. Some of them are bullshit, but I mostly have trouble with the ones that involve obscure game mechanics - like how the gently caress am I supposed to realise that not only do I have to /emote at some statues but that /covereyes is an emote - but after that I realised that the game's going to do that sort of thing and it wasn't too bad. The only one that really hosed me up so hard I looked at a cheat was in Egypt and it turned out that the game has a day/night cycle that you have to take into account because duh. I've also given up a few missions where I was completely stumped, but they didn't seem unfair, just hard. I've also used phone apps or websites to decode things because gently caress doing it by hand. I kind of forgot how to combat, so I started again and it turns out I've forgotten a lot of the investigations anyway, so hooray replay value.

To bring the thread back around to Machine Tyrant chat, I finally got around to playing the Starcraft 2 expansion this week and the first boss fight is a massive robot that marks the floor with targets you have to avoid. Turns out I can avoid that poo poo all day long if I'm not using WASD to move around.

Its on sale on steam a fair bit, grabbed it during the xmas sale. Figured I'll just focus on getting to QL3 for now, rather than just focusing on a single skill which won't really come into use until much later. The That'll leave a mark quest is screwy. Every time I get near town, about 5 crazy rippers spawn and just slaughter me and the escort. twistedmentat fucked around with this message at 09:55 on Jan 17, 2014 |

I was thinking about picking this up since it's on sale. I usually play through MMOs with just a friend or two, is this a good game for duoing? It seemed like most of the story was single-player and I wasn't sure if the dungeons were all intended for groups of like 6 people.

You can definitely do a lot of the quests together, though you'll probably end up breezing through some of the content that way. But it can be fun running around hunting rares or doing investigations with people. The dungeons are pretty standard 5-man, Heal/Tank/DPS setups, but they are really well done. Very little trash and some incredibly fun boss fights. This is especially true when playing with people that aren't twinked as Hell so the fights are actually difficult. My biggest suggestion would be to play on... Arcadia I think. The RP server. There's not much of a formal Goon presence, so Grim is a bit of a bust, but Arcadia has players at all times and is, iirc, the largest server. People are kind of quiet when you see them running around but if you take initiative to talk in General you can get a lot of socialization. It also helps that the playerbase is a LOT more chill in TSW and are typically friendly. I haven't seen a lot of trolling or Barrens-chat level bullshit that seems to soak into most MMOs.

Groups are 5 people, and the majority of the single player stuff can be done as a duo. There are some single player only instances which can annoy people who dont have their gear and skills set for it. Server choice only affects PvP, you can and do play with others. There are rarely more then two instances of a zone, unless golems are running around. Variable Haircut fucked around with this message at 00:58 on Jan 18, 2014 |

The only thing it really changes is which versionof the PvP zones you wind up in, but since PvP here is awful it doesn't even matter there.
