The worst thing about seeing anything Dr. Mario (or Luigi, I guess) themed is that I can never get the goddamn music out of my head afterwards.

Dr. Luigi may be the worst Brad has ever been at any game

I got through the Anor Londo archers literally on my first try, blind. Game is easy.

Akuma posted:It really is if you're only posting to be smug about it. I died three times getting through Blighttown the first time but it was still hard and I could still see why it's a challenge for people. I'm saying Blighttown (and Dark Souls, by extension) is not actually hard when approached right. Three of the times I died were because I couldn't spot the toxic guys. After I killed the first one mind, I never had an issue after. All the time up to then I was not using a shield, so I was used to getting dicked on by arrow guys. One other death was because the dogs are dicks and cannot be hit by a rapier easily. The reason I found it easy I think is because, like Brad, I play cautiously. I fell for a total of one trap in Sen's (the backwards arrow, gotta admit, good trick there). Paying attention to poo poo and being mindful of your surroundings does wonders. I just legit don't get why people find Blighttown challenging, and also don't get how a shielded run is supposed to make it easier than my no shield run. I guess falling off might be an issue for some people, but it is never really an issue if you pick your battlefield - kite guys to somewhere that you can breathe in. The ground floor is just an exercise in managing your estus well. The fights are not a real big deal there, so I can only see the lack of flooring as an issue. Also, I found the way into Anor Londo through the window in like three minutes. E: I did find Sen's tricky, mind. A lot of the enemy positioning, with the zappy guys offscreen was not fun. But that is partly a flaw with the camera controls. Another Person fucked around with this message at 20:09 on Jan 16, 2014 |

My problem with Blightown is that it's a relatively poorly-done rehash of Demon's Souls' Valley of Defilement. The same structure is there: downward trek through rickety wooden hovels, followed by poison swamp fun. Valley of Defilement was unpleasant for most players, but it's a lot more effective at doing what it's trying to do and has some notable improvements compared to Blightown. It's the little things, like how you're fed non-respawning enemies that drop poison cures right as you're starting Defilement's swamp, compared to Blightown where if you're not prepared before you go down you may end up without any curatives handy.

Blightown is just poorly designed. There's a few other just plain bad areas in Dark Souls (who thought invisible platforms were a good idea?).

Yeah, I was thinking that looking at it. The game just looks loose all over. I can't play it due to lacking a WiiU, but do you think that it is a kind of slipperiness that you get used to over time, or is it just kinda bad controls? E: aha, all these responses. Oh, also, Brad, just listening to the AGDQ part of the podcast now and you said you liked watching people do speedruns that are not glitch runthroughs, but just pure skill, watch the F-Zero GX speedrun. It contained probably the most technically skilled play of any game I have ever seen. Very impressive.

I do often wonder about the psychology of raging against other people playing video games, though. What mental itch does it scratch? Is it a desire to feel superior about something? Indignation that others would watch less than perfect play? I don't give a poo poo how people play games when I watch them so it genuinely baffles me why others get so disturbingly worked up about it. Someone should commission a study.

I don't particularly mind about the quality of play when I watch GB or something like that. If I wanted to watch pro play, I would look for pro play. Lord knows it is easy to find out there on the internet. But I am watching for more than that - to be informed and entertained. That is the main reason I watch/listen to Giant Bomb. You guys deliver that. Maybe people just don't like watching people play in a way they feel is wasting their time or something like that. Also, what KoB said.

I guess the idea is you and your colleagues are assumed by some to be King poo poo of All Video Games because of your chosen profession, when in reality you guys play way, way too many games to invest that kind of time into each one. So they see you doing something poorly or not knowing about a certain mechanic in game X, and you're held accountable for it despite being incapable of putting in the hours they have. Then they get to (unfairly) question your credibility, because how can someone be a proper critic of video games if they don't understand you can use the raised drawbridge to hop over that one building in the Original course of Crazy Taxi? loving plebes
