So this album has gotten basically no press whatsoever (thanks Pitchfork!), and as a result I only heard about it today after it's been out for a few weeks, but Neil Halstead of Slowdive has a new album out as the band Black Hearted Brother. In short, it's his return to shoegazing. Check out a couple songs from it in these youtube links. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=O3g4a6GHc0A https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=m39Pl0wtgSI My favorite song from the album, Take Heart, isn't available on youtube yet, but the whole album's on rdio right now and I highly recommend it to anyone who was a fan of Slowdive/Mojave 3.

Yeah I've been really enjoying that album over the last week or so, it feels quite consistently good the whole way through and is quite varied

So i've been kind of obsessed with Tashaki Miyaki for the last year or so. https://soundcloud.com/tashakimiyaki Can people recommend me similar stuff? My only forays into shoegaze/dreampop are pretty much MBV and Tashaki Miyaki which I both love but more so Tashaki Miyaki's slower, lo-fi, depressive pop sound.

It has that spacey, noisy feel most of us are looking for in this thread, but still sounds new and updated. I get vibes that remind me of Broadcast and My Morning Jacket, and I love it. The Broadcast vibes really come out on Oh Crust, but the whole album has a little of it here and there.

I found out about Sea Oleena a while ago after coming upon her browsing Bandcamp "dream pop" tags late at night. I've been really into her second EP, Sleeplessness, for weeks now. I'm less familiar with her first, self-titled release since I think her second is in general much stronger but they're both free so why not just get both and see for yourself? From her second release, I particularly like "Southbound": https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aMlrd1g8jcI "Untitled": https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oyHrDaDHF04&hd=1 and "Orion's Eyes": https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oOgk_mx-g1k&hd=1 And has anyone heard of Kaitlyn Ni Donovan? I came upon her album Song For 'Three Days', released on Hush in 1999, a week or so ago and was surprised I had never heard of her since, from what I can tell, she's a big name in the Portland music scene and has been since the mid-to-late-1990s now? I can't find any audio or anything from that album (or, really, anything about her as a person or musician?) unfortunately otherwise I'd link some but it's a great album. Ni Donovan I think plays violin and so it at times gets a little experimentally drone-y but nothing that would make it seem undeserving of the 'pop' part of "dream pop" or anything.

Christ, you guys weren't kidding about the new Alcest. I just got done listening to it and it's really something special. I hadn't heard anything from them since Souvenirs d'un autre monde, which I listened to probably 5 years ago or more when I was listening to anything post-rock that I could get my hands on. I don't remember that album being much like this or being particularly memorable, but this is one I could easily see myself listening to over and over again. Those guitar textures were just sublime. And yeah, that last track...wow. That definitely ranks up there with the best Mono tracks as far as being one of the best long instrumental pieces I've heard in years. I want to listen to this album in my car but I feel like it would put me in such a dream state that I'd stop paying attention to the road and get in a wreck.

It's alright, not a huge fan. I kept wishing things would get a bit heavier and it reminds me of that early 2000's Coldplay-style alt rock. I liked La Nuit Marche Avec Moi, though.

I like black metal but I don't think that bright, full sound really makes sense with lo-fi + BM vocals. I'd probably love it if the recording weren't so flat and muddy and they didn't scream. I'd say "more Enslaved, less Darkthrone" if that makes sense. Also I can't listen to the opening riff of that first song without thinking I'm listening to Agaetis Byrjun. It's sooooo close to being awesome.

I thought the same thing initially but honestly I really don't know if I would've paid attention to the album if it had been cleaner. I think the contrast works and differentiates it from a lot of other albums out there currently. Their previous album has a much better production and I loved it initially but it felt a bit overproduced in the end (to me). Weird you mention AB, its one of my most listened to albums. I def see the resemblance now that you mention it, though I never realised it before you did. Notice how I abbreviated it to AB, no matter how many times I've played it I still can't spell it. Haha.

Hi thread, I've started to get into the genre via MBV and have been digging it but have a question regarding band Coaltar of the Deepers. I was wondering what genre they would fit into overall and if there were any recommendations you could give in that genre or sound. Here are the tracks from them specifically I really dig. Coaltar of the Deepers - Snow https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kfpQzoPJDmU Coaltar of the Deepers - Dear Future http://vimeo.com/50238450 Yes this song is from an anime but I'll be damned if it isn't exquisite. The second track especially fascinates me with all the layers and smart panning that's used. Thanks!

MBV's stuff and maybe a handful of tracks from random bands like Airiel and No Joy are the only tracks I find myself humming. It's hard to develop hooks in shoegaze, I think. That isn't to say that shoegaze hasn't influenced and made better psych rock, dream pop, and all that other wonderfully hummable stuff. There's just a lot of material out there that sounds a lot alike and I think it's perfectly rational to put it on random and zone out a bit. Just find some curated playlists to follow on Spotify and put it on random. That's generally what I do. vv
