Razzled posted:Do you guys find that there are typical "bracket" mistakes in ranked? Like, I've been hovering around Master Guardian I/II for a while now and I can't seem to figure out what it takes to upgrade my game. Are there typical pitfalls for brackets of rankings or is it as simple as I'm just bad at the game. How far rank wise do you guys think it's possible to go with good knowledge of what you're supposed to do in given situations while not really having great mechanical skill/reflexes? Hi, you sound like me. I'm an old CS fart who played super serious business in 1.3/1.6, then hosed off and hardly touched the game (or cs:source) since then, and a bunch of my friends (who also played in those days) have dragged me into cs:go MM. I find that I'm pretty quick to pick up on the flow and feel of how maps play out, what makes a good/bad strategy, and game sense type things....but I'm pretty goddamn bad at shooting. I get outshot all the time (I'm MG1.) If I practiced really really hard at shooting I think I could get up to DMG, as I feel it's the #1 flaw in my game. However I don't think this is a "pitfall" of any kind, and I don't think you can generalize it by rank at all. Even aside from shooting, I could still work on other things (read:everything) that would help me rank up too. It's a complete package and all of it matters. I've played versus some teams that couldn't shoot worth a drat, and still gotten dumpstered by them because their strats, timing, and grenade placement were all amazing and they could take or retake sites at will. It matters a lot less if you can't shoot if the other guy is blind or smoked out constantly when it matters.

So during the winter sale I bought like 3 new accounts to just mess around with in matchmaking. Anyways, I've been doing kind of dickish things like losing on purpose to see how low of a rank I can get, then see about ranking up from there. I've found that the ranks seem to be fairly accurate, at least for me. Every time I've found I could basically carry almost every game to victory until I get up to my skill group(high badge, low eagle? I kind of bounce between those two). If you are getting stuck in the lower ranks, and think you have a pretty good shot, I'd recommend taking things slower. Do more slow walking/creeping, and if they frequently push then sit back and let them push in to you first. Rushing can be good sometimes too(especially if you can rush something like long A on d2 and get that pick quickly), but taking things slow is a lot more reliable. Also: Use your sound! Listen for footsteps and check it against your radar. It's so easy to pick people off one by one when you can hear them coming and they don't know where you are. How long is the window to reconnect to competitive games? A friend of mine was having some technical difficulties, and what was a very brief disconnect became a lost match because he was unable to reconnect and was replaced by Bot Edward, who went 0-14 and bought a Negev to give to the other team. Edit: Our matchmaking adventure has seen us rolled by several Silver III teams, I think we will end up in Silver I or II.

So I logged onto my ESEA account to renew my membership, only to find that I had a promotional code for a free month of ESEA. Rather than give it away as a gift or whatever, I just entered the code into my own account and got a free month. Been awhile, but still feels nice and clean. If you have an ESEA account that was previously Premium status (even if it's Free status now) you should check and see what you have, you might have one sitting in there as well. Meh.

Is changing the mouse sensitivity in windows itself the next best step after changing it in game? I thought maybe I'd try turning it down more (because I would like to be able to actually hit something with the dessert eagle from more than six feet away) but I already had it as low as it would go, and my mouse doesn't have any sort of dpi switch. Also is it good to have a ranking before trying to jump in the goon server(haven't played enough MM to get one yet)? I'm getting tired of the lack of interesting people in the rest of the game so I figured maybe you guys would be more fun to gently caress around with.

Your windows sensitivity should be set to 6/10(halfway) and no 'enhance pointer precision' ALWAYS. Never change your windows sensitivity. What kind of mouse do you have? If it's a gaming one you can most likely adjust the DPI to 400, then find your in game sens from there. If not, you can go below 1 sensitivity in game, just use the console to set 'sensitivity .75' or whatever. We try to recommend to newcomers to at least have enough games played to have an MM ranking. We don't mind new players, but please at least have knowledge of the default maps(dust2, train, nuke, inferno, mirage). Somebody joining up for their first game of CS ever might just get advised to go play some MM before hopping in to goonmans.

Why can't you go lower? If you change the windows slider for mouse sensitivity away from 6/11 it does some weird poo poo where it scales the mouse movement.

I have a logitech m500, it's nice but it's not a gaming mouse, so no dpi. I thought loving with the windows sensitivity sounded bad, I didn't know you could go below 1 in game so that's rad; there's a reason I have a 13"x13" mousepad. And I'm not completely new to the game, I have like 450 hours logged, just an extremely small portion of that is on the servers that count towards a rank.

Hey Ruin Completely, and well anyone thats new for that matter, feel free to add me. I have like 20 hours in this game and am doing MM and DM to get myself better at this game. If you're looking for someone to brave the unknown during that time, add me on steam. I know first hand that while some goons will find your incompetence hilarious, at one point it will wear thin on a few. http://steamcommunity.com/id/znorps/?l=english In other news, I took the advice in the OP and got the autoexec.cfg worked out, fixed up my crosshair, and configured my mouse. I've been playing deathmatch to get my shooting under control and am getting better at nailing headshots. I checked out this dudes video as it popped up on my 'what to watch' page. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=og73XpXhxtk Focusing on the one shot kill and fixing the rest of my stuff has already helped.

A few nights ago I was buzzing pretty hard and did some MM and I was in the loving zone, just drunk enough to not care or overthink poo poo, but not so drunk that it messed up my performance. I was zen, just round after round blurred by and I did fantastic. A couple nights ago I did a goonman while drinking and was clearly missing a lot of things that even at my skill level I should be getting. Although maybe it was just the stress of being overwhelmed by higher skill players. I'm going to continue to experiment and find the proper level for maximum shootymans enjoyment.

demoinfo update: still broken, and most likely not getting fixed any time soon. Even though CS:GO uses DOTA style protobuffers internally instead of the old valve usermessage buffers that all the other HL2 engine games use, the demo format is still apparently a clusterfuck that no one can read except Valve. There's a couple randoms also taking a look at it so maybe one of them will figure it out, but as far as I can tell it won't happen unless Valve decides to just release whatever demo viewing poo poo they use internally (which is how the original demoinfo tool got released for DOTA). But given how much more effort goes into DOTA vs CS:GO at Valve I wouldn't get your hopes up. https://github.com/pmrowla/demoinfo-csgo/issues/1

Well, you gotta use some kinda wizbang technology so that 1000 people can spectate the same DOTA/CSGO game without causing any noticeable performance impact. poo poo's pretty slick. I think its short for ProtocolBuffer too, which sounds more real and less crazy. Its just a format like xml only not nearly as verbose and wasteful as xml, so more like JSON, but with different rules for deserializing that makes it more flexible or some poo poo. That's mostly right. Protobuf is just a google library for message passing. Valve had an old messaging system for passing server/game events that was kind of lovely so they started using protobuf in Dota. Then they sort of half implemented them in csgo but the other half still does old valve poo poo so the demo files are weird now.

I was watching Anders from NiP do some matchmaking the other day and I think he summed up the problem with hackers pretty succinctly. The annoying ones will let you think you have a chance to win but at some point will doubt they can win without hacking and switch it on so that they can roll you until they're comfortable again. You can also generally tell the hackers because they have no idea how to play the game.
