I mean much as I'd love to take the time to detail why I don't like an awful show named Kill lA Kill, that really has nothing to do with awful reasons to not like Attack on Titan. There are some pretty okay reasons to not like it; its pacing is really bad in areas, it's not really as smart or clever as it wants you to think it is, the controversy over its author. But "giants shouldn't be the real bad guys" is a ridiculous non-reason.

Huh, it doesn't turn up in search at all, but the link works. Weird.

I went ahead and watched an episode (I meant to just take a quick peek but, you know, AoT-) and I'm not sure it's the Blu-ray version either. That was supposed to "fix" the "green" stuff, right? (Like Eren when the Colossal Titan appears behind him why am I spoilering this-

Some of the naming in that version drove me nuts (Jean is now "John," Eren Jaeger is now.. uh it was either "Yeager" or "Yaeger," either way looks wrong.) Also it cuts off the last second of the next episode preview.

Er, don't misunderstand I'm not trying to rag on threeagainstfour for pointing this out or look a gift horse in the mouth or anything. And thank you for the link, sir!

Yeah, for some reason Netflix search won't even show it no matter what you type. I had to navigate manually to find it.

Hopefully they cleaned up the translation because the Funimation version was incomprehensible sometimes.'

Edit: Yeah, it's still got the lovely translation that totally botches what people say. Like what Armin yells during the fight with the female titan to distract her from killing Jean. And episodes still have all the dumb "INSERT SCENE HERE" moments so I'm not sure this is the cleaned up version. Looks like the broadcast to me.

I think you're misremembering, because the fight in the forest against Annie was exactly where I jumped to in order to see if it was an improved version. It's exactly the same thing we got before (see: the missing scene where Annie punches the tree that Mikasa on while she's yammering on about cutting Eren free and all of those views of the sky with screen shaking pointlessly). That episode and the final Trost episode were the worst offenders for "Uhh... poo poo, just put something on the screen with sound effects because we ran out of time."

Given how popular it was, I think it's pretty likely they'll produce more seasons when there's enough manga to adapt. Given the nature of the series it doesn't really work with filler, though, so they kind of have to wait.

Well, I just marathoned through the season of this that is on Netflix. I'd known nothing about this show except it was about humans vs. giants and the images from the gifs thread.

This show is pretty goddamned amazing. A bit predictable at times, devestatingly unpredictable at others. It's probably the most "horror"-themed kaiju story I've seen, a basic attempt at capturing the terror of Godzilla movies past, rather than the spectacle of it. The mystery of the Titans is great, the animation is awesome, the characters are all generally likable, even if Eren is quite literally The Most Intense Dude On Earth.

Since I've just watched a whole load of it, I've got speculation that is likely old hat by now for the Manga crowd, but here are my thoughts on the story and what the Titans are (obviously spoilers):

1. The Walled City seems to be an effective deterrent to the Titans, but I think--used as a metaphor in episode one--that it seems to serve as a pretty convenient food aggregator for the Titans. All of the humans are gathered in one place, penned in and relatively easy to harvest. The fact that the design of the wall explicitly allows them to feed on large groups of humans while maintaining the population in other periods, and the fact that nobody knows who actually built the walls (and their size would suggest indeed that perhaps they were built by the Titans themselves) only makes it more suspicious. The names of the Walls as well are probably going to be significant later.

2. So it seems pretty obvious that this is a post-apocalyptic world, and that at some point the world was more or less the same as ours. It's unclear how long ago that was though--the Titans are said to have only been around since 107 years ago, which has two terrifying implications--one being that in just 7 years they managed to devour nearly the entire human race, and the other being that mankind has had only 7 years of practical combat experience against them prior to the century of peace, which would explain why everybody loving SUCKS at fighting Titans for the first half of the season. The boring conclusion to this would be that the Titans were manmade weapons of war that went out of control. The fact that we have humans who can transform into Titans and act as controllers (in a rough sense) for them only seems to confirm this. I should also not need to point out, but the only member of this society we haven't seen yet is the oft-mentioned King, who has yet to make an appearance. It's also pretty clear that the only person who benefits the most from the current situation is the king himself, and the traitor seeks to join the Military Police above all things--for a purpose that may not yet be clear.

3. Henge makes a very important point that nobody really digs into deeper--the Titans may only look the way they look because we perceive them that way, and they are, in fact, something else. Furthermore, when humans transform into Titans, they seem to materialize them almost out of whole cloth, building them from golden lightning. Perhaps the Titans have bodies that exist in some other dimension that are drawn into the world, or perhaps the Titans are, themselves, creatures of pure energy that simply coalesces in a way that makes them appear human. This would explain the variety in place, but since we now know that the Skinless Titans are human beings--which means that the Colossus was not teleported in, but rather was a human being outside the wall who transforms at that time. Maybe it's Hannes? He would have been in the right area at the time, but it seems unlikely that such a minor character would ultimately end up being the main villain(?).

4. So what is Dr. Jaeger up to? I'd thought at first that, as a doctor, he was developing a disease that would wipe out the Titans--biological warfare would be the best method of wiping the whole race out. He's got something to do with Eren's ability to become a Titan, and that ability was something he could inject into him. There's no way that this creation of human-controlled Titans is not related to the genesis of the Titans themselves, but it's notable that the human Titans are VERY different from the regular ones, so much so that even regular Titans can tell the difference immediately. It seems unlikely that the Titans are being controlled by somebody, and more that the ordinary Titans are basically just mostly-mindless beasts that can be controlled by human-Titan shepherds. This means that, regardless of who is controlling the Colossus, eliminating or capturing them may not bring about a means of destroying the Titans--although the power of a Titan that large would be sufficient to just slaughter all of them. Unfortunately, it seems that to manifest a Titan that large requires a lot of energy, which is why he never sticks around for long.

These two things lead me to believe that the area between the walls was created by a society of Titan shifters as an artificial human farm, possibly one of many worldwide. Presumably the King (and the wall cult) are in on it, considering all information of the outside world and any advanced technology that might turn the tide against the Titans are suppressed. That the Titan shifters waited 100 years to break down the walls (and even then only the outer one) when they had the capability to mow through the walls at any moment says to me that the humans were being intentionally harvested over a long period of time, and the destruction of walls are the Titans "harvesting" the humans for consumption/conversion/whatever after letting the population grow for a while.

Well this depends on a few things. One being that Titan shifters existed prior to the events within the show, which is likely, but not yet entirely confirmed. Dr. Jaeger is a famous doctor for curing an epidemic (which would be a big problem in a fenced in area like the Human Territory). If it IS a human farm, then that must imply that human beings are in control of the Titans to some extent, and that the Titan's existence is to the benefit of somebody--perhaps the, again, unseen King.

The other implication is that Titans existed, and then human beings discovered a means of becoming Titans, which Dr. Jaeger seems to be the pioneer of. There's at least five years worth of time for him to be doing...something, which culminated in the least of which as his son becoming a shifter. Annie is a shifter but her knowledge of how she became such, what her purpose is--all unknown, but it seems clear that she and some other force wants the current status quo to exist, to diminish the human population and feed the Titans.

The big question is WHY Titans eat humans. I'd initially thought there was a metaphyisical element, and human beings consumed by Titans become Titans. This no longer seems the case, as Annie and Eren are anomalies rather than norms, and no other Titans resemble humans who are consumed. In fact, all Titans seem human-like, but not quite human. They also don't seem capable of reproducing themselves. If there is a facility producing Titans, it must be connected to Jaeger's experiments, or perhaps it developed independedly. It's hard to tell at the moment, especially since we have so many unreliable sources of knowledge. For instance, how did humans even discover that the solitary weakness of the Titan is the nape of the neck? That's one hell of a very specific location to attack--even if you're fumbling around with a cannon, it seems unlikely that you'd discover that specific weakness without some rigorous experimentation or some foreknowledge. And again, Titans LOOK like humans--why is that? Why are they in the walls? WHY IS THERE A TITAN IN THE WALL!?

This is the first Anime I have seen in like 10 years and maybe the third total in my life and while I am mostly enjoying it, I find myself fastforwarding through A LOT of it. 7 episodes so far of characters you're supposed to like getting their poo poo kicked in and interspersed monologues that I appreciate but simply don't have the patience for. Maybe that's what Anime mostly is, I don't know really, but I am hoping it turns around soon. Maybe I am just used to the classical American style of film where characters don't get beat up and cry and piss their pants for half of a series before things turn around.

And just as I write this we have titans knocking other titans heads off. About time.
